Preview and interview with Sondre Lerche: http://www.ba.no/puls/article6784962.ece

Sondre takker Elvis

Topp 5 album er «Imperial Bedroom», «This Years Model», «Painted From Memory» (med Burt Bacharach), «Trust», «All This Useless Beauty», «Blood & Chocolate». Opps, det ble visst seks, ler Lerche.

Sondre thank Elvis

Sondre Lerche is clear that Bergen relevant Elvis Costello has meant a lot to his own career.

Why Bergeners should see Costello in the yard Saturday? Because it is a unique chance to hear one of the world's best and most versatile, fun and tree songwriters, backed by a fabulous dynamic and brilliant band with keyboardist and drummer who has played with him since 1978, says Lerche to BA.

Toured with Elvis

He even got a unique chance as an artist when Costello Lerche asked if he would warm up on him numerous concerts in Canada and the United States in 2005. The prototype asked trailer. It has left a deep impression.

- For me, Costello is one of the biggest. I may have the deepest relationship with much of what he did in the 90's when I discovered him, but rock history, he certainly had the most impact as a character and musician in the late 70s.

- He's really impossible to categorize and despite the fact that he has never sold many game discs become an omnipresent being who has worked with all kinds of people. This autumn will see an entire album in collaboration with hip hop group The Roots.

- How big was it like touring with him in the U.S. now seen in retrospect?

- It was amazing. The biggest was the first to get the chance at a few concerts in Canada and a little later invited back on a bigger tour in the United States. There I took as a great compliment. Elvis Costello was at the time, and perhaps still is, my favorite artist. So for me it would not predominate more about the Beatles rose from the dead and invited me to go on tour with them.

- HE IS FEARLESS

- Did you learn anything?

- Yes. Mostly about how to use and manage the band and constantly expanding repertoire. EC and The Imposters used every soundcheck to practice in more and more songs so that the concerts could be so varied and spontaneous as possible. The band knows maybe the first song and then they had to follow the EC. He played exactly what he wanted and the band had to embark when they recognized the song.

- It inspired me a lot on the stage itself. The fearless authority. And I had the urge to play loud and sing myself hoarse with the stomach. To really be able to carry all the musicians, all sound, no matter the conditions. I got a lot to think about and had not made enough "Phantom Punch" disc without having toured with Costello and seen 25 concerts in a row on nœrt hold.

NON COOPERATION

- Have you had any contact after the fact?

- I was backstage and greeted one time I was at a concert with his band and a few years ago. When I had just covers, one of his songs ("Human Hands" to "Duper Sessions"), so I was wondering if he had heard it. He was happily excited.

- Was there ever talk about something more cooperation?

- No, it had of course been the festivities on paper, but I am generally skeptical of working my old heroes. It can easily be somewhat irregular factors that are difficult to balance creatively. I put more appreciative of all the conversations we had about music after sound check.

- Favorite song?

- Impossible to pick one. Could said at least 100 I think is absolutely brilliant. Top 5 album "Imperial Bedroom," "This Years Model", "Painted From Memory" (with Burt Bacharach), "Trust," "All This Useless Beauty," "Blood & Chocolate". Opps, it was shown six laughs Lerche.
Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.

Han begynte med «I Hope You’re Happy Now» fra nesten 30 år gamle «Blood And Chocolate». Gikk så direkte over i Nick Lowes «Heart Of tHe City» og fortsatte med Sam & Daves «I Can’t Stand Up For Falling Down» fra «Get Happy».

Uoppfordret.

Elvis alive and well in kind
Varied and rock solid from an old new wave hero

It's been a few years since Elvis Costello appeared on the charts. But he is by no means forgotten among his old fans. The approximately 1,000 audience members who were present at USF Saturday night went not home disappointed. For old man was in great shape, and lived up to expectations and then some. For almost two and a half he served a mix of familiar and lesser-known songs - both their own and others'.

Direct hip can not well call man anymore. It almost 20 years ago Costello recently had an album on top10 in England, and the last years releases have barely snuck into the top 100 best-selling. Here in this country, he has never been inside one of the ten top the charts during his 35 years as a recording artist. There is still nothing to say on productivity or creativity. About three weeks filling Costello 58 years, and his latest antics is a collaboration with hip hop group The Roots. The results will not come until the fall. This evening, however, the material from the 70's and 80's dominated.

Musical chameleon
If he has been a musical chameleon throughout his career, he has kept the black horn-rimmed spectacles and the light geeky hipster look. The Imposters called the trio who have backed him in recent years, but strictly speaking it is just old The Attractions with a new name. Both Steve Nieve behind keyboards and drummer Pete Thomas has the backing Costello since their debut album in 1977. Davey Faragher on bass has indeed only been with since 2001.

He began with "I Hope You're Happy Now" from nearly 30 years old "Blood And Chocolate". Maybe not among his best-known songs, but it sounded reasonably good. So went directly over to Nick Lowe "Heart of the City" and continued with Sam & Dave's "I Can not Stand Up For Falling Down" from "Get Happy". It went off at a furious pace, and the audience seemed to enjoy themselves. That warm enthusiasm without the frenetic ecstasy. Passe volume and sound as good as we have gradually come to expect at an event in New Røkeriet.

Elvis Costello's distinctive voice sounds exactly like the glory days, and the unique phrasing came especially to his right on the quieter songs. These were themselves not to plank older material. "Watching The Detectives" was a mixture of reggae and dub extracted in a somewhat unusual version. Steve Nieve throws and even some stroke of Edvard Grieg for the occasion. Tonight's edition was several notches above the original version, and it says quite a bit.

Klopp on guitar
It was Costello also shown that he is an outstanding guitarist. Most often thinks of Costello as a songwriter and singer, but several times this evening will saddle proof that he is also a dab hand on the electric guitar.

And diverse it becomes. Ballads and rockers in perfect harmony. Whistle Soli and acoustic parts. A concert that started really well, and just gets better and better as Costello was warm jersey. The man is almost pure Springsteen unpredictability and the concert in the city was quite different from those he served both in Trondheim and Bodø earlier in the week. And the planned set list for the evening was only partially followed.

There was hardly a single dead, although some of the tunes worked better than others. Not least, the end came the beads one by one. An intense version of "Shipbuilding" made a strong impression, but maybe tonight's main surprise was perhaps "I Want You". Transferred with an intensity and emotion that few can match.

Purple Rain
"Oliver's Army" and "I Do not Want To Go To Chelsea" was Costello at his most likeable and "Allison" as one of the many extra numbers could even get the audience to sing along to the chorus. Unsolicited.

Finally, a rather rowdy version of Brinsley Schwarz and Nick Lowe's more than 40 years old mini warehouse "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Love, Peace And Understanding" followed by - believe it or not - "Purple Rain" by Prince.

A two and a half hour party night with an artist who delivered more than even the most devoted Costello fan could expect.
