You've caught me out Colin. Just checked with Mrs. John, it was Friday, not Sunday!!

[...and yes we were robbed. The red team should have been down to 9 men and it was a cracking decision by the officials at the end  ]

Was in Liverpool, went to the Cavern Club, Beatles iconography all around, walking through the streets, woman singing Imagine in a bar somewhere. I was with people I mostly hadn't met before and we were commenting on the Beatles being everywhere you turned. Someone said 'Aww, Imagine, what a classic', and, having always found it annoying, was citing Radio 4 Sat Morning's Inheritance Tracks going on about its 'message' without defining what exactly that was, and contrasting 'Imagine no possessions' with the infamous Dakota building controlled temperature floor full of furs to which the response came 'As Elvis Costello sang "Was it a millionaire who said 'Imagine no possessions'?"' I was so amazed it took me at least a minute to locate the song in my head. These things don't happen every day.

Just got in the car 10.38pm, heard mention of Ross McManus, my ears pricked up and there followed mention of, and an interview, with Declan.

It was a Radio 2 programme In the Mood - Joe Loss with Michael Freedland.

Should be on iplayer soon O(programme originally broadcast 10pm Tuesday 2 July.

Enjoy

Reference in the 7 July edition of The Sunday Times.

"In their heyday, the Bhundu Boys were lauded by Eric Clapton and Elvis Costello"

Unfortunately it was in an article about a rather unsavoury member who joined the band in the 1990s after their heyday who amongst other convictions has a rape conviction.

From India Knight's column in today's Sunday Times about Proms and the old UK equivalent of the school disco:

"You wore something like a wedding dress to the prom, and something from Miss Selfridge to the disco. Promgoers had corsages made of real flowers; disco-goers had a little badge proclaiming their love of Elvis Costello..."

Rush of Elvis tunes on UK radio. Saturday night Gold played Pump It Up about 23.30 and then about an hour later played Oliver's Army.

Radio 2 played Cant Stand up this morning.

Hi all

Long-time EC fan, short-term lurker, first-time poster so please be kind, especially if this something that's already been mentioned.

Last week's Radio Four edition of In Our Time contains (at least) two Costello 'lyric bombs' (if that's not a term already, I'm claiming it) - no prizes for guessing the song in advance when you see the subject is the invention of radio, but who can confirm to me the two references to lyrics which are dropped casually into the conversation? The first comes between about 10 and 15 minutes in - so subtly that I made a mental note to consult Google to see if our Elv had taken the words from the person being discussed ( ). However, there's a second drop between 25 and 30 minutes that confirms to me that it was no coincidence. I wonder if I missed any?

Still available on iPlayer as I type (to people in the UK anyway) but also downloadable as a podcast.

Sorry, I didn't notice 'em! There was a reference to a cable going under the sea ("And slide inside the telephone wire that runs under the briny" from Crawling to the USA) and in the later bit, someone says "radio was wonderful, marvellous" - but that's gotta be a coincidence!

What were the lyrics you heard?

Thanks for the welcomes. I'll have to listen to it again later for exact timings, but I'm sure early on there's mention of radio as "sound salvation, cleaning up the nation".

A page on "Socialist Unity.com" from 2009 is not where I would expect to find EC. The page is headed: "Elvis discusses his thoughts on Thatcher" - and has embedded links to a Youtube clip of EC on The Late Show with Tracey MacLeod.

Not too surprising to find that interview and song on that site really! The disgust just oozes out in the interview and the song. Great stuff!

I was at a conference at the Holiday Inn Bloomsbury in London today. I went to the toilet and heard Brilliant Mistake as the background music.

While having a cocktail at a local Dallas breastaurant (Bikinis - http://www.bikinissportsbarandgrill.com/ ) , "I Hope Your Happy Now" played nice & loud. I'm pretty sure I was the only person in the place that truly appreciated it.

Elvis does indeed use the line 'The Revolution Will Be Televised' , Verbal, but he's probably quoting Gil Scott-Heron.
