The usual venue for this concert has been the Great American Music Hall (GAMH), at 859 O'Farrell St. in San Francisco. That venue is advertising a show by Jenny Lewis on 6 October, so that may not be the venue this year.

And on Oct. 6, Austin de Lone 's annual benefit for the Richard de Lone Special Housing Project (http://www.rdshp.org) featuring Elvis Costello, Bill Kirchen, Jim Lauderdale and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band will be held at the jazz band's new West Coast home, The Chapel at 777 Valencia Street in San Francisco. Tickets will be available online soon.

Sounds awesome. Definitely cool that it's being held in the Mission district, but one question remains unanswered - when/where/how to buy tickets! I guess that will be posted somewhere/sometime.

2. Fleet Week (w/ airshow incl. Blue Angels -- a big deal around here.)
3. Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival
4. Game 1 of the NLDS (most likely)


Traffic is probably going to be horrific.
I'm trying to figure out how to deal with this.
Since I'll be attending both the early and late shows, I'll need my car to get out of the city well after midnight.

I was there -- and significantly inebriated.
I had decided with all the covers and whatnot to just enjoy myself, and not document.
I can extrapolate on given information -- but absolute and totally accurate recall is probably out of the question.

Tremendous evening.
Early show had its rough parts -- but was still very, very good.

Late show was fantastic.
Costello's voice held up well, for the most part.
Lauderdale/Miller was wonderful -- a real treat.
Kirchen was Kirchen. I love that guy.

Preservation Hall Band is just fucking amazing.
Musicianship at its finest.

And now... I REALLY regret not having stayed for the late show, as this is one of my favorites and I have yet to experience it live. Alas, I was on the fence since I had a 5:30AM shuttle back to the airport. Guess what side of the fence I will never be on again?

Mrs. jmm and I were there for the early show. When we arrived all of the "good seats" were taken or reserved but Lesley DeLone had them bring two more chairs to the floor for us. Thus we sat 5th row center and couldn't have asked for better placement. They video'd the show. The cameraman we were next to had done the Elvis and Nick show 2 years back (which was fantastic). He said it's almost ready and that they were doing a short interview with EC to add as the last part that very evening -- we shall see??

This was our 3rd EC of the weekend having see the HSB and friends of Jesse W sets on Friday. The 3 of them highlight what keeps us coming back again and again - simalar but different, chamging all the time. Solo and then with Buddy Miller just doing a few of Jesse's songs and then this tour d'force night! And we even missed Mill Valley on Fri night.

When I say Saturday was special it's an understatement. The only complaints about the short opening sets from the PHJB and Buddy / Jim Lauderdale were that they weren't longer by design. The new album that Buddy & Jim did songs from sounds like it'll be GREAT if what we heard is any indication. I still thought so after hearing some of the same songs during Jim's set at HSB on Sunday (not sure how he gets the first slot of the day??)

But on to the main attraction. EC was in fine voice and enjoying himself from the very start of "big boys cry" through his story about playing his version of "no particular place to go" for Chuck Berry and Keith Richards -- and then for us -- to "stick out your can" once the PHJB had joined in. A BIG highlight was Tomorrow's Blues, the new song, and as played with the PHJB put me in the area of St James Infirmary, if I dare say it. I just hope it stays in that area not like some of the recent songs that seem to have gone astry in the studio (5 small words being the first that comes to mind).

It seems like EC is getting even more willing to do what he wants on song selection (especially covers and basically none of the "hits" this night) and sharing with Buddy, Jim,, PHJB and Bill K. Bill singing The Times they are a' changing (which we'd heard earlier in the day during his HSB set) was great as he was on guitar throughout.

I didn't keep a set list - there are others in common with the late show like I Lost You, Indoor Fireworks, Blame it on Cain, Man at the bottom of a well, walking my baby back hom, sulfur to sugarcane but others seem different too. Hopefully the list (or even better the taping that was going on) will surface at some point

The venue of the new Preservation Hall West was so new it wasn't all painted but was a wonderful combination of intimate and professional, I look forwad to the chance to go back
