Favorite Elvis Costello Song?

Post by elvis_Costello »

Hey, I know a lot of Elvis Costello songs... but not all of them. I'd like to learn more. (:
My favorites are Allison (duh.), New Lace Sleeves, and Shipbuilding...
but those are all the popular ones. :|
So, what are YOUR favorites?

The favorite song changes with the wind, you know.

This morning, All the Rage. Right now, Needle Time. Tonight? Spin the wheel...

You have much to learn. You're still too young for some of it.

Do you sing along with Elvis? I'd like to hear an adolescent version of Shipbuilding...

Haha, no I'd never make a cover. I'm not the best singer...

Oh another one of my favorite songs is I Wanna Be Loved.
Is it just me or does "I Wanna Be Loved" And "Shipbuilding" the best songs to calm down to? Ha, it is for me. :D
I listen to an Elvis Costello Radio Station on Pandora, so I learned a lot of new songs like Lip Service and Man Out of Time.

It changes all the time:

Currently - Impatience

Regular contenders:

Romeo's Seance
Beyond Belief
Jack of All Parades
Soul for Fire (surprise surprise)
New Lace Sleeves
The Other Side of Summer
Accidents Will Happen

My list can go on and on. It is hard to pick a single favorite.

@Mikeh
It used to be one of my favorites too, until you know... I discover new songs. I think its because it reminded me of summer. I'm not sure why, I listened to it a lot at the beach.

These days it is probably "Jimmy Standing in the Rain" or "Dr. Watson, I Presume" with their multiple layers of meaning and interconnectedness and the overall bittersweet tone found in both. Hard to supplant "Almost Blue", "Fallen" or "Jack of All Parades" though, but periodically, like now, there are challengers.

Ha ha!

I love it when someone asks what the favorite Elvis song is...then no one seems able to really make up their minds!

It's the mark of a true prolific genius...Elvis will live forever!

Yeah!! No one can make up there minds. i'm jsut going to have to listen to them ALL!!
I also LOVE the song "Pills and Soap". It has such a cool like... melody to it!!!

Today I missed the bus because I was basically just sitting in bed, writing in my cartoon journal (like, a journal but I just draw my life in comics) and listening to my Elvis Costello CD...
and then I looked at the clock and I missed my bus!!!!

ELVIS COSTELLO AND CARTOONING DEFY THE ILLUSION OF TIME!!!!!!!!
And then I was listening to Elvis Costello in the car.

Like Roofdog, I once would have said Sleep of the Just, but now it's That's not the part of him you're leaving.
Quite similar in the structure of the song very passionate regarding a love that might have been and the way he recounts and unfolds a story about how an individual has repressed a desire for what seems to be the greater good but is, in fact just a wasted chance or opportunity.
A recurrent Costello theme I know and so many songs illustrate this beautifully, but this is my current favourite.

"Pump it Up" always works when I'm exercising and need to run a bit further or a bit quicker. The live versions especially sound really, full of energy and bring out something a bit primal in me! I never cease to react in some way when I hear it.

"I Still Have that Other Girl" is a gorgeous song. Love it.

I wish I had 60+ years ahead of me to devote to Costello, his music and the paths he's led me to !
Couldn't possibly pick a favourite because so many mean so much in very different circumstances but for moods :-
Happy/Joyful- the whole of "Get Happy" but the fusillade of songs from Opportunity to I Can't Stand Up will do superbly
Angry/ Mad/ Frustrated - the first half of Blood and Chocolate - a bastard of an album I think I once said before
Loving/ Content - Still/ Fallen/ I'm I The Mood Again almost all of North
Regretful/Bitter - Painted From Memory
Bouncy - Punch The Clock
Adult - Brutal Youth with a divorced man's look at the world
These cover a multitude of moods (and sins) but I could then go on about live concerts that move me or alter my moods or lift me up ......
now there's another can of worms, hey BA ??
