It was recorded. Two Little Hitlers was definitely the high point of the show. Costello certainly knew what kind of audience he was playing for, making sure he played the hit songs from the early years.

Hopefully, it will go on dime before Friday.

On to Jacksonville, where I hope he plays something more rare. I really miss Napoleon Solo. In any case, it was a fun show.

Concert Review
Elvis Costello and the Imposters - Hard Rock Live - April 25
By Lee Zimmerman

Thu., Apr. 26 2012

Better than:
Elvis befriending Burt Bacharach.

Call it the redemption of Elvis Costello. After all his various side excursions over the past couple of decades -- from country to classical, as well as tentative attempts at jazz and equally awkward passes at MOR -- Elvis has returned to the route he traversed early on.

Even after putting out albums at a prodigious rate -- sometimes multiple releases in the span of mere months -- his best work remains the product of his heady postpunk beginnings, when his material came across as vital, insurgent, and with an aim that was all the truer for it. Now reunited with two of the original members of his iconic combo the Attractions, which he's redubbed the Imposters -- specifically, keyboardist Steve Nieve and drummer Pete Thomas (bassist Bruce Thomas has long since been replaced by Davey Faragher) -- Costello seems determined to revisit the roots he planted some 35 years ago.

Unfortunately, while the intent is there, the presentation doesn't quite live up to that promise. The showbiz shtick that Elvis adopts early on -- top hat, cane, the nom de plume Napoleon Dynamite, and even the gyrating go-go dancer situated stage right -- seem so contrived that ultimately the effect dims whatever fire the band manages to muster.

The idea of the Spectacular Spinning Songbook -- a giant wheel that members of the audience are invited to spin to allow some supposed spontaneity in the set's song selection -- is in fact a misnomer, as most of the numbers appear predetermined. It's a fun idea to invite fans onstage, but for the most part they're there merely to embellish the cabaret concept. As for the wheel itself, it's mostly a flashy prop. Without it, promoters might have had to resort to billing the tour as a greatest-hits package, which clearly wouldn't offer the same pizzazz. Besides, Elvis isn't quite ready for the oldies circuit.

Distractions aside, Costello and company prove they're still capable of carrying the material with little muss and fuss. Elvis himself seems to have improved his dexterity as a guitarist over the past few years, although Steve Nieve is still the major ace in the hole as far as giving the songs their sheen. Thomas is equally adept, although at times, his drumming seemed rote and merely workmanlike in its execution. Faragher is an added plus not only in terms of anchoring the bottom end but also supplying the backup vocals that add extra dimension to the spit and sass that still informs Elvis' singing.

Overall, the material was well chosen -- by the band, that is, not necessarily by the spin of the wheel -- and for the most part, it effectively skimmed the surface of Costello's best early efforts. Songs like "Pump It Up," "Radio Radio," "Heart of the City," and "Mystery Dance" were delivered in rapid-fire succession early on, a reminder of the urgency and intensity that characterized his youthful flash and frenzy. Likewise, "What's So Funny ('Bout Peace Love and Understanding)," "I Don't Want to Go to Chelsea," and "Watching the Detectives" reinforced the fact that -- wheel be damned -- even the most casual fan could hear the hits.

There were a few lulls in the action to be sure -- "I Want You" unmercifully dragged and slowed the show's momentum to a crawl. The one-two presentation of "Everyday I Write the Book" and "Allison" were surprisingly lackluster, shorn of the emotive impulses that sparked the original versions. (Tagging a cover of "Tears of a Clown" with the latter seemed an especially forced attempt to add extra punch.)

Surprisingly, the band's take on Chuck Berry's "No Particular Place to Go" (prefaced by an amusing anecdote in which Costello recalled a recent awards event that found him playing before Keith Richards and Berry himself, "two men that have come to blows over rock and roll...") and a version of "Shotgun" by Junior Walker and the All Stars grafted on to "Uncomplicated" proved especially effective during the encore. On the other hand, capping the concert with recurring verses of "Purple Rain" seemed like a tacky attempt to further titillate a crowd that was polite, sparse in spots, and relatively restrained. By contrast, Costello's cover of the Beatles' "Please Please Me" was one of the more impressive performances of the evening, a subtle reminder that when Paul McCartney tapped Costello as a writing partner and indicated he was a surrogate John Lennon, he was generally on the money.

Too bad, then, that the edge was muted. Or, to put it another way, Costello's cranky attitude isn't what it once was.

Critic's Notebook

Personal bias:
I still have fond memories of Costello and the Attractions tearing up the TV screen on Saturday Night Live. The contrast between then and now is all too obvious.

Random detail:
The show started unusually early, at 7. Was it out of consideration for those of us who had to work the next day? Or was it planned this way to accommodate the 57-year-old Costello's need for naptime?

By the way: While the band looked dapper in their suits and fedoras, the stage garb also suggested there was something very staid and sedate about onetime rebels who now dress like respectable businessmen.

Concert Review: Elvis Costello & the Impostors at Hard Rock Live

By John Thomason

Apr 26th 2012

The circus came to Hard Rock Live last night … in the form of an Elvis Costello concert.

Donning a top hat and cane, the British New Wave troubadour acted as carnival barker, MC and overseer of an elaborate set design whose centerpiece was the 150-foot Spectacular Spinning Songbook. The giant, motley wheel featured a rainbow of 30 Costello hits, rarities and covers, which a few select fans had the opportunity to spin onstage, thus dictating the next song (or few songs, in some cases) that Costello would perform.

There was also a “Hammer of Song” setup, a takeoff on strength competitions, in which participants would swing a mallet to move a ball, which would sound a bell, which would then let them select any song they wanted from the Songbook. Off on the other side of the stage, a go-go dancer gyrated inside a brightly lit pod, complete with a dancer’s pole, and Songbook-spinning fans sat at a nearby, makeshift “bar” with a TV broadcasting static.

Costello is a fine showman, and there was always something to look at last night (even though, disappointingly, the big screens had been removed from their normal positions to the right and left of the stage). His interactions with the pre-selected wheel-spinners were witty and engaging. As a live performer, however, Costello started off on shakier ground – the opening number, “Pump it Up,” was kind of a mess, starting off-key and coming off more like a sound check than the finished product. In fact, the four songs Costello played before introducing the Songbook came off rushed, like he was trying to speed through them on a deadline.

The show picked up greatly with the infectious “Chelsea,” the first Songbook selection, then it began to drag with “I Want You,” an already overlong track that Costello lengthened into a slow, druggy, echoey number. Then the show picked up again with a surprise “bonus” from the Songbook: four Costello titles with numbers in them, played in succession, followed by a string of hits, some from the Songbook, some played just because Costello wanted to.

In fact, it was surprising how little of the set list was culled from the wheel spins, despite the novelty of the concept. More than once, Costello interrupted the spins so that the arrow would point to the song he wanted to play, understanding that nobody wants to hear a rarity or a B-side as the evening wound down.

It’s probably that case that few fans left the building last night complaining about the song selection. The set with loaded with crowd-pleasers – even casual Costello admirers would have recognized the majority of the tunes. But there was something unexciting about the whole experience, and I’m not sure if I felt detached from the action in my upper-tier seats or if the show really lacked luster (Again, the lack of big-screen projection was a problem for me). But I’m sure I was not alone in this reaction. The crowd did stand up occasionally, but it was more of a polite golf-clap audience than a rousing collective of fans. Dancing was at a minimum. After the concert, fireworks shot above Paradise Live as pockets of sailors watched on for Fleet Week. I was hoping for a few more metaphorical fireworks from the circus inside.

Bringing out the big wheel, Elvis Costello highly entertaining at the Hard Rock

By Andrew Nathanson

April 26, 2012

It’s a casino: Spin to win! The main course: Elvis in the house.

Recreating the Spectacular Spinning Songbook, Elvis Costello and the Imposters broke out the big wheel along with an on-stage Society Lounge, contemporary Go-Go cage, a fair-like sledgehammer and bell, and a red “Requests” light at center stage.

Mixing it up with equal parts singer-songwriter, punk, Vaudeville, and showman, Costello and his Imposters counterparts whipped up entertainment for all to not only enjoy, but also participate. Opening with “Pump It Up,” he let the audience know they were in for a ride this night at Hard Rock Live at Hollywood’s Seminole Hard Rock Casino.

Early on a couple came on stage and gave the wheel a whirl and up came “Chelsea” as in “I Don’t Want to Go to Chelsea.” The giant wheel, a recreation from the plans of the original 1986 wheel, since donated to the Hartlepool Museum of Showbusiness Machinery according to Costello’s website, insures a unique show every night. Later spins by others garnered playing of “Peace, Love, and Understanding” and “The Joker.” Eat your heart out Pat Sajak.

Bonus points: the couple got to lounge at the bar, behind Steve Nieve’s ripping keys. Complete with an old television, Costello humorously stated it was tuned to Fox because he didn’t want to miss a minute – the screen was mostly “snow”. After getting comfortable moving and grooving at the bar in front of the keyboard, the couple took a turn in the ultra-cool Go-Go booth which featured a chic dancer straight from Studio 54 most of the night.

Aside from the circus event, Mr. Costello presented a solid show filled with twists and turns literally and figuratively. The impromptu, such as “Uncomplicated” as stated on his website’s setlist, along with the unpredictable meant he and the band needed to be well rehearsed for a variety of material. This resulted in a very tight performance and a robust presentation artistically speaking.

The Imposters were for real. Nieve’s playing was both fluid and concise. As well, it is a rare treat to take in the psychadelic Theramin made famous by The Beach Boys and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin fame, among others. Rock steady were the rhythm section of Pete Thomas on skins and Davey Faragher on a fat but tight bass. Thomas presented both finesse and heavy hitting at the appropriate times. Faragher would benefit from a little more PA volume for his smooth and driving bottom lines.

Later on after a solo trek through the throngs about 20 rows deep sans security, Ringmaster Costello brought a couple of magnificent ladies culled from the audience to take a shot at the hammer and bell. The bell ringing results: the celebrated “Alison” and, upon prodding by Mr. Costello, a request for the Beatles’ “Please Please Me.” With wit he responded he wasn’t sure if the latter was a song title or the lady’s request. The requester took over the boogie booth while her cohort gracefully shimmied on stage for a couple of songs.

Driving the point home during the encore “mini-set,” Costello hit the nitrous button and punched the pedal to the metal with Chuck Berry’s “No Particular Place To Go.” Introducing the song, Costello gave a heartfelt tip of the hat to Berry, going so far as to suggest all contemporary music derives from Berry’s limb of the music tree, based on what he said on stage at an awards presentation with Keith Richards present.

The hard-hitting closing set presented the heavier punk side of Costello in full force with an intense take on Prince’s “Purple Rain.” Prior to that a slight shift in color and sound spectrum brought “Red Shoes” – one attendee named Melissa said she’d been waiting for that song the entire show. Melissa and her boyfriend Alex and a group of friends back from the Wanee festival had extra tickets, and before the gig apparently gave them to several sailors here for Fleet Week; very generous of the group to give to those who sacrifice for our country.

Contributing a mostly compelling concert — part show, part interactive, and overall very dynamic — Elvis Costello and his band of Imposters played to entertain and brought the big tent with them.

The first video (Beyond Belief) is not from the Hard Rock show. I was there with my fiance, who was the "very sexy" first spinner, and she was in the cage for Beyond Belief. Will post pics when I upload.
