Ross McManus
Re: Ross McManus
Was that the Juliet Letters review that said there were "no tunes" on the album resulting in an angry letter from EC?

Stuart did, probably, review TJL but the review that prompted Elvis' 'angry letter' was by Patrick Humphries in Vox magazine, as reproduced in this -

Re: Ross McManus
I see from facebook that Ross's wife has just died.(if he is still with Ronan's mum) I am 'friends' with Ronan and there are messages of sympathy for him regarding his mum.
What an awful time they must be going through. Prayers are with them all.

Re: Ross McManus
How awful, particularly as Ross is in bad health as well.
Who’s this kid with his mumbo jumbo?
Re: Ross McManus
Absolutely, prayers and thoughts are with the family.

Sara MacManus RIP Page
In memory of:
Sara MacManus
Thanks for taking the time to visit this JustGiving page in memory of Sara MacManus.
Sara sadly passed away on Saturday 12th November 2011, wife of Ross, Mother of Kieran, Liam, Ronan & Ruairi, Sister of Alicia & Rod and "NanaMac" to Finn, Alice, James & Eibhlin.
During her life she did a lot of charity work for all sorts of charities, but she mostly helped to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Inspired by the courage of two family friends Wanda Walker-Hume & Lorraine Walsh (nee Carr-Willig) who both sadly lost their battles with Cystic at young ages, Sara helped to arrange social nights, gigs, family fun days and even played in a ladies rugby match to help find a cure for this disease.
Please help to carry on her good work and find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis.

Re: Ross McManus - donate on behalf of his late wife Sara
I don't know how legit this is but most of the first chapter of Graeme Thomson's 2004 bio of Elvis is here -
http://www.worldcat.org/wcpa/servlet/DC ... cerpt=true
It does, of course, feature lots of information about Ross.

Here's Ross MacManus' autograph, a e-bay purchase from a while ago that I had forgotten until I was doing a tidy up today.

RIDDLE OF TV LEMONADE GIRL
Wednesday April 25,2012
AN attempt to recreate one of the most famous adverts on UK television has hit a snag – after advertising executives failed to hunt down one of its two stars.
The Secret Lemonade Drinker, which featured Elvis Costello’s father Ross MacManus singing a jingle, starred actor Julian Chagrin as a man creeping downstairs at night to feed his addiction to fizzy drinks before being caught by his wife.
Chagrin, who moved to Israel 20 years ago, has been found but his co-star Harriet Philpin has vanished from the acting scene and advertising bosses are trying to track her down.
Philpin, who also appeared in Doctor Who and The Sweeney, is not listed in any casting directories.
Executives want to recreate the advert, first aired in 1973 for R. Whites Lemonade, to celebrate the launch of a new ice lolly.
Jenny Bostock, of ice-cream maker Fredericks Dairies, said: “We are appealing for anyone who knows Harriet’s whereabouts to contact us.”

Family Ties: Elvis Costello and his dad
Jul 20, 2012
by Vicki Kerrigan
We can only surmise how difficult it must be to be the son of a famous father, but how much more traumatic must it be, to be the reverse! The father of a famous son.
Ross McManus was a small time band singer with the Joe Loss orchestra, an English dance band of the 50's and 60's. His son Declan however, is a huge international star. We know him as Elvis Costello.
Ross's claim to fame was the writing and singing of an advertising jingle for a British soft drink company in 1974. It was, to give him his due, the most successful advertising campaign in Britain at that time.
Join Vicki and I this afternoon in "Family Ties" as we take a look at the life and music of the McManus family.

In memory of Ross MacManus who would have celebrated another year around the sun today. May he rest in peace. I will be picking up the slack and will toast him as it's my bday today, too. I celebrate along with Tom Petty and Snoop Lion (formerly known as Snoop Dogg). Yay to Libras!

Radio documentary about Joe Loss - ' listen again' via this link for the next six days .
Elvis contributes at c. 38 minutes.
Tuesday July 2 2013
Joe Loss was the undisputed doyen of big bandleaders. His name was synonymous with the very best in dance band music. Loved and respected by his public and profession alike, he had a style and musical policy that kept him at the very top of the big band world for 60 years.
Joe was born Joshua Alexander Loss on June 22nd 1909. He was trained as a classical violinist from the age of 7 and gave his first solo concert when he was 10 years old. Loss started band leading in the early 1930s, working at the Astoria Ballroom and soon breaking into variety at the Kit-Kat Club. With broadcasting, recording and annual tours in addition to the resident work, the band became highly popular over the next few years; by 1937, he had become the biggest name in the world of big band music. Vera Lynn gave her first broadcast with the band in 1938 and when Joe married Mildred Blanch Rose at London's Great Central Synagogue that year, the crowd scenes in central London were akin to the Beatlemania of the 1960's- the wedding was even filmed for the newsreels.
In April 1951 Elizabeth Batey, vocalist with Joe Loss, fell and broke her jaw. Joe was badly in need of a replacement and remembered hearing Rose Brennan on the radio during a visit to Ireland. Within days he had located her and, before a week was out, she was in Manchester rehearsing with the band. She stayed with Loss for fifteen years; one of her co- vocalists with the orchestra from 1955 was Ross MacManus, Elvis Costello's father.
In 2010 the Joe Loss Orchestra celebrated its 80th anniversary - it is now Britain's longest running live entertainment unit of all time.

Ross's version of the Roy Orbison hit It's Over has appeared on a new cd collection of BBC performances from the 1960s -

I got this answer -
With regards to your interest in recordings made by Ross McManus, I have been informed that a Volume 2 in the Series Tops In Pops of the 60s may be released in the coming months. They contain tracks which may be of interest to you i.e. That Girl Belongs To Yesterday - vocals Ross McManus plus Next Door To An Angel duet featuring Ross McManus and Tony Steven, plus the title called Hey Baby I'm Dancing - another duet by Ross McManus and Tony Steven. There are many more tracks being considered featuring Ross, but it is unclear if they will ever be transferred to CD as CD sales are sadly now ever decreasing.
Re: Ross McManus
A highlight of the recent U.S. shows has been the use by Elvis of a clip of his Dad singing If I Had A Hammer
A short extract of it is in Mark Kidel's Mystery Dance documentary.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=az0HdhdqfNs
I asked Mark , via a Twitter direct message , where it's from . He told me it's from a film called The Mood Man, from April 1965. The film is viewable on Vimeo. That can only be done with a password from the copyright holders. The film is at https://vimeo.com/67602033 , the password may be applied for via this http://www.baimenterprises.com/.

I got a password & watched it. Richard Jeffs didn't seem to know about the use of the footage in Elvis's show.
Here are the details at the link -

The music was specially recorded for this film.

Joe Loss & his orchestra
Maigret (theme) (Ron Grainer)
Joe Loss
Old Ned "Twist" (Steptoe & Son theme) (Grainer)
Joe Loss
No Regrets (m.Charles Dumont)
Rose Brennan (acc. band & singers)
If I Had a Hammer (trad attrib Seeger & Hayes)
Ross MacManus & band
Let There Be Drums (Nelson)
Joe Loss orchestra featuring Kenny Hollick (drums)
Mine’s A Pint Of Blether
Blue Aces Show band (Irish pop group)
Tango ’65 (Moorhouse)
Patricia Brewer & Pierre Dulaine (dancers) & Loss band
(I’m saying) Farewell to the Dames
Larry Gretton (voc) w.Loss band & George Mitchell singers
[arrangers Ivor Raymonde & Leslie Vinall]
It's a real time piece. Certified in Jan. '65 so that probably means it was filmed in 1964. Ross only appears in the 'Hammer sequence , which doesn't cut away from the set seen in the 47 second extract in the documentary. The other pieces are joyous stuff, with everyone smiling all the time. The Blue Aces Showband are hysterically 'Oirish', with lyrics like ' I'm the boy to please her/I'm the boy to tease her/I'm the boy to squeeze her' , with a cut away to footage of people with horses going to a pub, stopping of to dance on the road on the way - those crazy Paddys!
