Your 10 Favourite ..... Smiths songs

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

10. Panic
If you don't know what is wrong with me
Then you don't know what you've missed

Virtually impossible.

This Charming Man
Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want
Back To The Old House
Asleep
I Know It's Over
Panic
There Is A Light
The Queen Is Dead
Reel Around The Fountain
Heaven Knows I'm Miz Now

(well at least I managed one original choice - all other 10s here are equally fabulous!)

These lists are a lot of fun. Encouraging me to think about groups and songs that I haven't paid much attention to for a while.

A Smiths list of songs not eligible for a Best Of would be an easier task.

Here is my crack at a favorite 10;

A Rush And A Push And This Land Is Ours
Cemetery Gates
What Difference Does It Make?
Ask
I Want The One I Can’t have
Girl Afraid
Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me
Still Ill
Stop me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before
That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore

Reel Around The Fountain
Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
This Charming Man
Sheila Take A Bow
Ask
Rusholme Ruffians
How Soon Is Now?
Death Of A Disco Dancer
Frankly, Mr. Shankly
The Boy With A Thorn In His Side

Very difficult.

Thing about this listing is that in others you might think 'really?' a few times but here every song has been fully justified! The quality of output was astonishing.

Nice non-perennial. YWCA. A Rush and a Push also original, and great.

A 10 of other non-perennials, or rather ones no-one seems ot have listed :

I Won't Share You (I can't believe I didn't list this before!)
I Don't Owe You Anything
Shakespeare's Sister
Is It Really So Strange
You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby
Stretch Out And Wait
I Started Something I Couldn't Finish
Handsome Devil
The Hand That Rocks The Cradle
Never Had No One Ever

"Is It Really So Strange" - especially - wonderful , I suffered terribly leaving it out of my list - I love the lyric - the way he so matter of factly says "I killed a Nun" and then "I cant help the way that I feel".

and you can punch me
and you can kick me
and you can break my spine but you wont change the way that I feel.

Definitely one of their best.
echos myron like a siren
with endurance like the liberty bell
and he tells you of the dreamers
but he's cracked up like the road
and he'd like to lift us up, but we're a very heavy load

Play with this one a bit as- one- I am in the mood two- keep the ever fun Mozipedia on the bed side table for a nightly factoid treat three- they are a musical pleasure for my wife and I both having been totally enthralled in the eighties and four- because I have never been able to forgive the lead singer for the snit he threw one evening in NYC causing the only show I had a chance to see of them live at Radio City Music Hall to be cancelled- here goes:

1 This Charming Man-ubiquitous I know but a perfect single and the juxtaposition of the action with the heavenly jingle/jangle never fails to please my ears.
2 Jeane
3 Reel Around the Fountain
4 The Boy With the Thorn in His Side
5 There is a Light That Never Goes Out
6 Vicar in a Tutu
7 Panic
8 Is It Really so Strange
9 Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
10 Ask
11 Stretch Out and Wait
12 A Rush and a Push and the Land is Ours
13 I Know It's Over

again hard to keep to 10 and I am fond of the baker's dozen.

Nice list. Stretch Out and Wait less obvious but always loved it. Jeane more obscure. I'm not sure |I actually know the recording of it as B-side to the immortal TCM, I only have it on the unreleased 'Troy Tate' debut album, and love it from there.

Your inability to count is terrifying!

Well Otis- what is it they say these days "thirteen is the new ten"! Jeane I know as the 2nd song on the Original Single of "This Charming Man" that I bought all those years ago and which became my aural gateway to this wonderful band.

Jeane is a great track - and one that was well done by Billy Bragg.

I love The Smiths but couldn't attempt to do a Top 10 list without resorting to some CS inability to count. In my case 25 is the new 10  And even then I think I'd struggle!

Came upon this in Slate today- both share a 1983 anniversary. Strangely the 'mashup' does work:

A rather wonderful cover. I wonder if Moz was ever addicted to Super Mario.
