Ross passes....R.I.P. Mr. MacManus

Post by bronxapostle »

as per facebook...

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Ross MacManus at the age of 84.
He had a rich and remarkable life.
Ross passed peacefully after a long illness.
He was surrounded by love at the end.
The family are deeply grateful for the care and kindness he received from the doctors and nursing staff and for the kindness and support of their friends.

Not a surprise but very sad all the same. Thoughts and prayers with Elvis and the four McManus boys who lost their mother just a couple of weeks ago.

AHHH. Relief and sadness. Given what came to be inevitable, I so hope things went "well" and now can continue to.

R.I.P. Ross - great singer! I'll never forget his version of Georgia with Elvis on a Saturday night arts programme in the mid eighties.

Thoughts and prayers for all the family, Ross was always gracious and friendly whenever we met him at Elvis gigs - a gentleman and a "real" musician.

Very sad, indeed. Wonderful, though, that he lived to such a ripe age and Elvis got to enjoy the blessing of having a father, well into his own maturity...

I met Ross once, after one of EC&A Royal Albert Hall shows in July 1994, and I can only second what Sulky said about him being a gentleman and a most likeable guy.
I asked him for an autograph and he wrote "To Jack - Peace - El's Dad, Ross MacManus" on the first page of Brutal Youth songbook.

Rest in peace Ross. Often the passing after a long illness can almost bring relief to a family but the loss of both parents within a fortnight must be awful for the brothers.

That clip of Patsy Girl is fun. I am sure the dancing style was passed on to Declan.

Otis and I sat near Ross at an Elvis gig at the Birmingham Symphony Hall a few years back. He looked very proud and I really wish I had said hello. RIP and lots of commiserations to Elvis and the rest of the family.

From the Times Obituary today:

'MacManus was immensely proud of his son's songwriting success and picked out The Birds Will Still Be Singing as a particular favourite. "I'd like that to be my epitaph" he said.'

Rest in peace, Ross.

I didn't know that. I have already asked my family for that song to be played when I am laid in the ground.

The Times is pay-to-read online. I'll , hopefully, get a print edition tomorrow and transfer the text.
