Hopefully this recording will include the Costello/Nieve songs "You Lie Sweetly" and "Lesson In Cruelty".

Also, curious about the fact that, according to this, Steve sings on these recordings. Anyone know what his voice is like? I can't remember who sang on Mad About the Wrong Boy.

I went to hear him live a few months ago and had a very enjoyable evening, although I have to say...he hasn't got much of a voice. It's not offensive or anything, but he's clearly not a singer--and to his credit, he doesn't overexert himself trying to do what he can't. I would also say his songwriting is pretty uneven as well. Some of his lyrics were charming and funny ("Young People"), but a lot of the songs were fey and cloying and just really strange ("My Electric Keyboard"). However, I've been looking at his album "Windows" on Amazon. It appears to combine instrumental music with ambient street noise, heard through open windows. That seems like an interesting idea. Has anyone heard it?

A few months ago I added Steve on Facebook on a whim. I was really surprised to find that he actually accepted my Friend request and we engaged in a very pleasant back-and-forth in which I expressed to him how much his music with EC meant to me and that I thought Welcome to the Voice was fantastic (I had been listening to it feverishly at the time). I also expressed my disappointment at the fact that I can't find any of his solo work in Buenos Aires. He responded by sending me a package with all three of his records-- Mumu, It's Raining Somewhere and Windows-- and a very nice handwritten note. I really love the records, particularly "Windows"-- it's a beautiful piece of work with some incredible playing. Steve is a class act.

Steve Nieve and Vincent Segal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clAn4VOU1so

Summary: Steve gave a preview of his next album "2gether" on januar 29. The album will become available in spring. He collaborates with Elvis costello, Robert Wyatt, Laurie Anderson, Vanessa Paradis, ...

Steve did sing on his "Mumu" album. It's mostly harmless.

As for as the singing on "Mad About the Wrong Boy" album goes ... it's generally Bruce, as far as I can tell.

Hmm, that's interesting. I thought Steve sang his own compositions on Mad About..., and Bruce sang his and Pete's. At least, that was my (un)educated guess.

A songs plays on his site ; it sounds like a Steve dueting with, I'm guessing, Glenn Tilbrook ; the lyric includes the immortal line ' Dennis The Menace seeking Beryl The Peril'.

Also: the amazing Steve Nieve, who’s been Costello’s arranger, band leader, and keyboardist extraodinaire for 35 years, has just finished his own album. There are plenty of great guest vocalists like Glenn Tilbrook, Ron Sexsmith, Joe Sumner of Fiction Plane, Laurie Anderson, Harper Simon, Costello, and Vanessa Paradis aka Mrs. Johnny Depp. “2 Gether” is an album some major label should jump on.

Re: Steve Nieve's new solo disc now available

Post by johnfoyle »

Steve's new solo album is a hugely interesting listen. Contrapuntal in style it features over a hour of piano variations that, in many cases, range all over the place and really involve the listener. Time and again the piano seems to be out of tune which serves to be oddly beguiling, giving a earthiness and humanity to the pieces.

The Costello covers are prime examples. Alison , clocking in at 3.58, is played pretty straight , with the tune subtly paced to bring out the melody. Towards the end it seems that Steve is nearly going into a new tune, as if he's used to going into the medley format that Elvis regularly employs the song in. A few more notes and we would have had Suspicious Minds of No More Tear Stained Makeup. Shipbuilding seems, to these inexpert ears, to be in a key higher than the 80s recording. This 5.14 mins. version is gloriously extended by chordal digressions , a nod, perhaps, to Elvis orchestration based on Chet Baker's improvisation in 1983.

Other highlights are 'Muriel On Main Beach' and ' Lazy Point #2 for Mark', both, seemingly, madhouses of piano playing until a theme becomes apparent. Doubtlessly many more tunes will , with repeated listening, reveal more delights.

A very welcome addition to Steve's output!

Joep asks Steve on Facebook -

Hi Steve, i just received you beautiful CD Lazy Point, but on mostly all the tracks there is some slightly distortion :-( howcome?

Steve Nieve

No , nothing unintentional on the CD. It is one complete performance, without cuts. I have chosen to use reverb on certain passages to play with the relief of the two pianos on the record, one being a Steinway grand piano and one being a yamaha upright piano played for the most part with the mute over the strings.

Listening again this evening it's possible , now and again, to hear Steve 'la - lal-ing' along with the music as he plays, even whistling at one point. It gets better with each listen!

Interesting, as that is exactly the way that "Keyboard Jungle" was recorded. (Although, of course, that was actually two performances, one for each side in the good old days of vinyl.)

Roger Friedman

…Elvis Costello lost his dad recently. Very sadly, Ross McManus, an accomplished British jazz musician, passed away at age 84. Meanwhile, Costello’s secret weapon for most his career, pianist/composer/Attraction/Imposter/musical director, Steve Nieve, is getting ready to release a new album of pop songs. Stevie Nieve is so talented it hurts. A few months ago he handed me a copy of “2Gether” and I haven’t stopped listening to it. Since then, Nieve released a CD’s worth of instrumental music to ITunes and amazon.com called “Lazy Point.”

But “2Gether” is full of beautiful vocals from very talented guest stars including Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze, French singer Vanessa Paradis, Joe Sumner of Fiction Plane, Robert Wyatt (famous for his song “Shipbuilding”), Ron Sexsmith, New York’s very own Laurie Anderson, and Harper Simon. These are the catchiest, most engaging tracks anyone could want to hear. I’m addicted to several of them– a killer called “Up” with Joe Sumner, “Life Preserver,” “I Don’t Miss You,” “Reactor,” “Save the World” and “Vertigo.” The whole thing is like a box of chocolates. I can’t wait for Nieve to release this collection. Some small American label would do themselves a lot of good to get the rights to “2Gether.” While I’m waiting, I downloaded “Lazy Point.”

By the way, Steve is married to French philosopher/writer/psychoanalyst Muriel Teodori, the estimable and marvelous co-writer of their “Welcome to the Voice” opera. Not bad.
