Sept 5 release of The Right Spectacle?

Do you think young dudes and dudettes thought Elvis was "In and Hot" when he released all these movies? Or was it like Monkey To Man, that you kind of ask yourself, who the hell besides me watched this?

Well, Elvis was "In and Hot" for a while pre MTV, pre CD etc. He was young, he was associated with the British New Wave movement, he was prolific and championed by the press and he sold a lot of records.

Some of the early videos are embarrassing but they probably weren't at the time - there wasn't the money to spend on videos until bands like Adam and the Ants, Duran Duran etc came onto the scene and made pop videos which were mini-movies. Elvis was never going to compete in those markets.

Some of them are great because they are so embarrassing; I can't even think of the I Can't Stand Up video without laughing to myself about how funny the dancing is. Similarly the end of Peace Love & Understanding where they are in the hallway and falling down is funny in that Elvis' acting is as bad now as it was then

Monkey to Man is strange in that it's hard to say who it is supposed to appeal to. Did it get much TV play? It is a hooky tune, it has pretty girls in it, it's funny but did help shift the single?

i still cling to my teenage enjoyment of MTV and MTV2, and I can tell you, Monkey to Man got one play that I saw, and it was in the wee small hours of morning on a "Buzz Clip" type show.

MTV is more interested in rap/r&b culture right now...which isn't bad; I like some of those songs, too--just an observation.

Yes the I Can't Stand Up... dancing is excellent! In fact all the dancing and fancy moves are great because they all seem so half-hearted and uncertain. EC's gestures all seem very nervious as if he hesitated as soon as he tried something. Also, the Accidents Will Happen video wasn't as good as I remember, it's close to epilepsy warning. Although I am still impressed by the computery effect at the end. Wonder if it was computer generated or not.

The Accidents video was computer generated and won some kind of award if memory serves me correctly.

The I Can't Stand Up video is worth it for the bit where they are all standing in the street dancing very badly and looking so awkward. I modelled my dancing techniques upon this "style". It's no wonder that my dancing could clear a dance floor. Something I can still do today

Got my copy today, and it's a hoot. Anybody know why there are no videos post-Brutal Youth (if this has been covered earlier in the thread, I'm sorry for repeat business).

Favorite by far is "New Lace Sleeves." "Accidents" is a close second.

I think you should try to replicate some of the dance moves at your next Oliver's Army gig!

Okay I've now seen all the videos with commentary and I must say I'm a little disappointed. E.C sounds like he was making the comments just glancing at the screen every now and then while focusing on reading or talking to someone else. Could've been better. He could have told some little story of what the song was about and stuff like that when there wasn't anything interesting going on in the video. The few comments that were made were interesting though..

Personally I enjoyed the impromptu nature of the commentary; if he'd taken the time to prepare something it would have come out more canned. Plus I like hearing the occasional chuckle when he's surprised by one of the visuals.

As for stories about the songs, he's said plenty about them in various liner notes and countless interviews. I should think the liner notes will be as definitive an account of What The Songs Are About until he writes a book about them. A DVD commentary track isn't likely a place for him to stow such insight.

Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

You're completely right, Wardo.

This isnt about the songs, I've heard him talk these songs about for years now (get the reissues and read the liner notes). It's about the videos, and it was awesome to get his reactions to the little things (he gave a lot of backstory on that confusing white bg, and why it was featured in three videos- as well as the time spent finding Oliver's Army video location). He's hilarious, as well.

I got RS in the mail yesterday and watched the whole thing last night. Even my wife liked the part she watched.

I agree that EC could have provided more background info on each of the videos. He could've also used a foil like Steve Nieve to comment along and point out the little stuff like the horrid fashion sense displayed in the videos. I have to admit that Elvis consistently rips into Steve's fashion sense in these videos...although Steve, more than any of them, completely deserves it! Just wish Steve was there to give a few replies like, "and there's Elvis with yet another suit...ruined by those stupid red shoes. Elvis? Can I borrow those red shoes...I need them to complete this year's Halloween costume."

Best part of this DVD? The live shows on the bonus features. Excellent version of "Clowntime Is Over."[/img]

The next Elvis video project - woo hoo (perhaps!).

I've finished watching Right Spectacle in its entirety.

Whilst I would love to have also heard Steve's comments, if you were to include Steve then you'd probably have to include Pete as well. I think it's fair to say that Bruce would not have been invited to participate in such a collaboration. The common theme to all of the videos is naturally Elvis.

I think the commentary works pretty well - there are some laugh out loud moments, particularly amongst Only Flame In Town Version 2.

I'm not sure if Elvis would have been comfortable telling the viewer exactly what the songs are about though. He relies on your own imagination/interpretation.

I love the live stuff too and it's a shame so much more is still in vaults. I'd love to see the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra show released. We know it exists.
