What´s the best debut of all time ?

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

This is a good one.

I'm going to go with Van Morrison's Astral Weeks

If that doesn't count (because of Brown Eyed Girl, etc.) than I'll say Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left
This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.

Talking Heads - '77 is pretty damn good as debuts go - maybe not the best, but certainly one that springs to mind.

That was technically not their debut, though it was their first LP. The Chronic Town EP preceded it - and that's pretty damn good too.

Aside from a few popular singles (which probably weren't even on the UK release), I very, very rarely listen to their first album. There's something about Dave Davies' voice pre-1966 that annoys the hell out of me

My new answer is REM - Chronic Town

I like the suggestions for High Land, Hard Rain and the wondrous Five Leaves Left Also...

Rattlesnakes - Lloyd Cole and the Commotions
Swoon - Prefab Sprout
1977 - Ash
Hour of the Bewilderbeast - Badly Drawn Boy
Stone Roses
Teenage Fanclub - A Catholic Education
Trash Can Sinatras - Cake

However, not mentioned yet...the greatest debut ever has got to be

Grace -Jeff Buckley.

MAIT is a good choice, B and C.

John Prine's John Prine. The whole history of the world is on that record. In neat little rhymes.

Understood, but with all the bands doing retro garage rock these days, this album stands up as one of the granddaddies of them all. I dare the Strokes to make an album that sounds this real.

Damien Rice - O
Tom McRae - Tom McRae

An EP ain't an album - you were right first time!

IP beat me to it: Unknown Pleasures.

MAIT wouldn't make my list of top 10 Elvis LPs.

If this counts, George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" is surely up there among the best debuts of all time.

A second vote for Van the Man's Astral Weeks. Also...

Dexy's Midnight Runners - In Search of the Young Soul Rebels
Elvis Costello - My Aim is True (as if that needed to be said!)
Joe Jackson - Look Sharp
Ry Cooder - Into the Purple Valley (think it was his first)
Bob Marley and the Wailers - Catch a Fire (his debut with Island)
King Crimson - In Search of the Crimson King

If it were best second album, TYM would be top of my list (well, that and Closer, of course). The gulf between MAIT and TYM is pretty enormous in my book. It's not just that the songs are much better, the whole realisation of the LP is so much more impressive and exciting.

me-ow!

In my humble, simplistic and certainly not learned opinion, MAIT is a handy little blueprint of the next four albums. I mean, "I got this camera click-click-clickin' in my head..."

Astral Weeks for me too. (I don't count the Bang recordings, which were made for singles, but the two Them records sorta disqualifies this)

that one, or

Richard & Linda Thompson - I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight (But this doesn't really count either, 'cause Linda sang on Henry The Human Fly, so they had made an album together before, and then there was Fairport...)

Other great debuts, many of which have already been mentioned:

Antony & the Johnsons
the Band - Music From Big Pink
Captain Beefheart - Safe As Milk
The Clash
Songs Of Leonard Cohen
My Aim Is True
Dag Nasty - Can I Say
Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables
Dexys Midnight Runners - Searching For The Young Soul Rebels
Gunder Hägg - Tigerkaka
Daniel Johnston - Songs Of Pain
King Creosote - Kenny & Beth's Musakal Boat Rides
Kate & Anna McGarrigle
Nellie McKay - Get Away From Me
Modern Lovers
Randy Newman
Gram Parsons - GP (after Byrds & Burritos, this is really no debut either)
the Pixies - Come On Pilgrim/Surfer Rosa (and Frank's solo debut)
John Prine
Ramones
REM - Murmur
SNFU - And No One Else Wanted To Play
Ron Sexsmith (the eponymous one; Grand Opera Lane is more of a demo)
Patti Smith - Horses
Stiff Little Fingers - Inflammable Material
the Velvet Underground & Nico
Loudon Wainwright III - Album I
Tom Waits - Closing Time
the Weakerthans - Fallow
Weezer
Zappa & The Mothers - Freak Out!
Warren Zevon - Excitable Boy (not really a debut either, but still...)
What this world needs is more silly men.
