Aside from a few popular singles (which probably weren't even on the UK release), I very, very rarely listen to their first album. There's something about Dave Davies' voice pre-1966 that annoys the hell out of me

Understood, but with all the bands doing retro garage rock these days, this album stands up as one of the granddaddies of them all. I dare the Strokes to make an album that sounds this real.

If it were best second album, TYM would be top of my list (well, that and Closer, of course). The gulf between MAIT and TYM is pretty enormous in my book. It's not just that the songs are much better, the whole realisation of the LP is so much more impressive and exciting.
