COSTELLO, who is accompanying Krall to Hawaii but not expected to play, suggested she not try to write lyrics per se, but feelings and the things she loved, imagistic phrases like "the perfume still on my mother's counter."

The Honolulu stop will allow Krall to relax in "my favorite place in the world."

"Hawaii is the only place I can really relax ..." she says.

She and Costello will vacation "someplace (here) where no one knows us." Krall is even considering surfing lessons.

Contrary to all notions of fiduciary responsibility, why not blow the grandkids’ inheritance on a weekend at the Vera Wang suite at the Halekulani Hotel in Honolulu? Ms. Wang was kind enough to choose everything about the 2,135 square-foot space, from the bathroom accessories to the flowers to the china. Anything that could come from the Wang brand has done so, with high-end furnishings and such providing local color at Wang’s direction. In addition to absurd levels of luxury, amenities include your own lanai deck, 24-hour butler, “Vera’s favorites” movie library for the 50-inch plasma screen, and limo service to and from the airport. There’s no bothersome artwork, as Wang opted instead for “beautifully framed mirrors on the walls, to reflect the stunning images and views inside and outside each room.” All for the utterly reasonable price of $4,000 per night ($5,500 per night should you choose the two-bedroom option). Oh Dear, that room is a rip off. You don't need a butler on your back for 24 hours/24. It's an embarassment, makes you feel like you should ask for things to make him busy. For the money , I'd get an Armani suit. Mind you, I trust you could find a very good place for around $ 200...

Plus I'm sorry to say the decoration sucks. Diana deserves better. Also Elvis. Of course, if they were given the room for free then it's OK.

Verena, it's amazing how your written English veers between oh-so-cute, slightly muddled European one minute, and then shows a truly accomplished grasp of American English the next. Are you a split personality?

Noooo. But you got me thinking...

Bottomline is, I have been exposed to many English dialects and consequently can't speak right in any language. I also like to repeat whatever it is I find fun, just for the thrill of it, and of course that's what I remember best. It all ends up in sloppy speaking / writing. I am not too happy about that myself, but don't tell me I am the only one who plays around with words here.

Or is it that you would expect me to play around and be perfect at the same time ? Oh Dear ! ... ... ...

Facing the famous, lost for words

Last week I was walking near a beach in Hawaii with my husband when I noticed two very cute toddlers.

"I think they're twins," I said, although it was hard to tell because they weren't standing near each other. They were scouting out the front lawn of a condo complex across from the beach, like explorers determined to make a discovery.

One was headed in my direction. He was animated, observant, focused intently on something at his feet. I was fascinated with how busy and chatty he was. It was like watching a very short, inarticulate play-by-play announcer. I tried to figure out what he was saying, but it was incomprehensible.

His mother, who was following closely behind him, noticed me staring.

"Are they twins?" I asked.

"Yes," she replied.

"How old are they?" I asked.

"Two," she said.

I smiled at her. She studied me from behind dark glasses. Nothing unusual about that. We were in sunny Hawaii, after all.

But then I realized this was no ordinary mother of toddlers. It was Diana Krall.

Here I should point out that I am not very good at recognizing people from pictures. Were it up to me to find the children whose faces appear on milk cartons, they'd remain lost forever. Also, I tend not to trust myself when I think I'm seeing someone well-known.

It's not as if I get a lot of practice in Edmonton. But I knew I was right this time, because a few nights earlier I'd attended a talk about DNA and forensics (my husband was in Hawaii for a conference), and in the course of discussing identical twins and their identical DNA, the speaker had mentioned that Diana Krall and Elvis Costello and their twin boys were staying nearby.

Had I not heard the talk, I wouldn't have had the slightest clue who I was speaking to. But now I was faced with a conundrum: should I continue what I'd intended as a casual chat with another mother? Confess that I knew who she was? Or just wish her a nice day and leave?

It did occur to me to say something nice to Diana Krall about her music, but the truth is, I'm not familiar with her music. I'm an Elvis Costello fan, and he was standing at the other end of the lawn, staring (or, more likely, glaring) at me. I couldn't bring myself to say, "Are you Diana Krall?" I already knew the answer.

And so I looked down at her son, who was still commentating about the grass, and asked what I'd been wondering all along: "What's he saying?"

"More coconuts," she replied.

That, of course, raised further questions. But I'd asked enough. I wished her a nice day, and left.
