There's heaps of stuff I haven't heard - practically all of the non-standard-album tracks on the reissues (as well as the demos, live, alternate takes etc) but I think that the songs he gave to Ute Lemper:

Punishing Kiss
Passionate Fight (written with SN), and
Couldn't You Keep That To Yourself

are brilliant examples of later period EC songwriting. I really hope versions of these show up sometime.

Not a bad choice. I also get a kick outta how it's listed as "The Psycho Song" on the credits for some unfathomable reason!

Yeah, that is a nice rendition. Seeing that the Warfield '84 shows were professionally recorded (and filmed, for an unaired MTV special, if I recall correctly!) and other tracks from it were used on the Ryko/Demon GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD reissue, it's not unreasonable to hope that "Stage Fright" could show up on the Rhino GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD.

Rare ones

These three songs are lined up on the RykoDisc reissue of Imperial Bedroom:

Really Mystified
I Turn Around
Nighttime

I might have the titles wrong, but these tunes are kickin'.

Gee I love 'Psycho', 'Hoover Factory', 'Upon a Veil of Midnight Blue' but my current favorite is 'Gigi' with Bill Frisell.

it has to be 'poisoned letter' offa one of the brutal youth re-issue(?).
i've yet to hear any other song sung with such vitriol
also, it is part of the evolution of a song and just trying to see how it becomes 'finished' is interesting

and the live version of uncomplicated on cruel smile
oh, i useta be disgusted
now i try to be amused

Interesting, Poisoner, cos that version struck me as rather feeble. It just seemed to lack the guts and wit of the original. Maybe I should check it out again.

maybe the lyrics and music are not polished, probably why it was never really released. but i can see the words spitting from his mouth and the rending of flesh as he tears into this person.
i also get the idea he is exacting some specific vengeance

Poisoned Letter is a great listen despite its imprecision, but I like how it seems to go on and on with further insults. It does sound like a practice run-through with those yeah yeah yeahs, but he also sounds pleased with himself as if he's just coming up with verses then used in All The Rage and My Science Fiction Twin. It could well have been the first time he sung them out loud. Love the way he says, "You little prick". Could it be another Bruce Thomas inpired song, I wonder.

has 'cheap reward' come up yet?
that song always sneaks up on me when i hear it. always the unexpected surprise

and 'deportee', the variant version of 'deprte's club'
last weekend i finally got the extended rykodisc edition of the 'gcw' and it was worth it just for that version of 'deportee'
very few lyrics were changed but just the entire d i f f e r e n t way he sings it makes it a new, much more enjoyable, song
oh, i useta be disgusted
now i try to be amused

I've always liked The Deportees Club, and I also like Deportee, the slower, calmer version. I think Elvis said somewhere that he thought Deportee is the way the song SHOULD have been on GCW...

On GCW, I also really like Worthless Thing, and how it addresses success and fame. It's a great song.

WORTHLESS THING

How many times can you jump out of the cupboard
Before someone gets suspicious or someone gets discovered
You can live forever in a split second of fame
Come on down the price is right what's your name
While a crocodile makes good shoes and a dog may change his coat
I can't change what's written on your face tonight and I quote
Chorus
Oh I wish you could see
Quite how much you could mean to me
You worthless thing
If you were ten feet taller and almost handsome
I might pay this king's ransom
You worthless thing

They commit blue murder along Union Avenue
Then they sell you souvenir matches
Nightclubs full of grave robbers from Memphis, Tennessee
And Las Vegas body snatchers
And he's carrying a warning can't you see how his eyes glint
Keep your bloody hands off my life your affectionate fingerprint

Chorus

All the cars and pills and girls who tore his shirt to tatters
Do you know how tall he was 'cos that is all that really matters?
Do you know his mother's last name do you think that he's divine?
You've seen the film you've read the book
you're drinking vintage Elvis Presley wine

Bored out of your tiny mind while life is twice as large
They'll cut her down to size on television
She's available and beautiful, but with more time to devote
They're going to take this cable now and stick it down your throat
So this is an obituary which should be right and fitting
For every clockwork cat and conceivable kitten

Elvis' b-sides are the best. The Rhino reissues are seeing to it that there are fewer and fewer actual "rarities" though, so I'll limit myself to things that are still "rare."

The Bridge I Burned (pop lie remix)-- this was only released on the really obscure promo EP put out around the time of Extreme Honey, and it features completely new lyrics! If you hate the original, it's no big loss, but if you like that song (as I do) it is amazing to hear the new words.

Bright Blue Times -- I heard this a few years ago on a rarities mix CD, and it sounded like a home demo by EC. A short little song, but great. I hope it gets included on an album someday.

"Suspect My Tears" and "Burnt Sugar Is So Bitter" -- both played live on the '99 tour, both never heard from again. Both deserve to be recorded with the Imposters the next time they make an album that is not quite so rock & roll as When I Was Cruel.

"Tommy's Coming Home" -- unreleased McCartney/MacManus tune, now heavily bootlegged. EC speaks highly of it, but has never seen fit to record his own version. One of their best collaborative songs.

These were both fantastic songs. They'll probably come out with the 15th reissue version of PFM...

Recently heard the parody of Alison he performed when hosting Letterman - both charming & funny, wish I'd seen it.

Letterman

Post by A rope leash »

I was fortunate enough to get it on tape. I don't think CBS has or will repeat the episode. It's too good for TV, anyway.

Poisoner: sorry I missed it. From dust2...dust:

Here come the juggernaut
Here come The Poisoners
They choke the life and land
And rob the joy from us
Why do they taste of sugar
Oh, when they're made of money?
Here come the lamb of God and the butcher's boy, Sonny

i use that 'nom de plume' when i write my comic books. it just seemed a natural. it struck me that we ytend to poison the things we touch. it's like being the anti-creator.

Are the versions of Elvis did of Richard Thompsons "Withered and Died" and "The End of the Rainbow" on any of the re-issues? They should be - both are fantastic.
