Most Overrated Band/Artist Ever

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Most Overrated Band/Artist Ever

Post by pophead2k »

OK, let's stir things up. You only get to pick one. You can choose to explain. Or not. Personal attacks will not be condoned, although healthy disagreements are acceptable.

I'll start:

The Doors

Cosmos: Incorrect, but an understandable feeling
El Vez: Correct, but don't tell any of my bandmates I said that
Red Shoes: Incorrect, you can't just tolerate the egos, you must embrace them as well
Time(e): Dancing: correct, otherwise incorrect
Blue Chair: Correct, although woulda been, coulda been
Johnfoyle: Correct, but don't tell my girlfriend
Jackson Monk: Coldplay: Correct, Nirvana: a gruding correct, although there's nothing to match them for when they hit the airwaves

No Doors fans out there to tell me how thick I am?

I don't hate them - but I don't like them very much - at least they were different - but the Morrison cult wears very thin and Ray Manzarek appears to be a huge wanker -

How about -

Pink Floyd

My thoughts on the Doors is that they are good for the occasional single if you haven't listened to the radio in a couple of years. On days that I can tolerate it, their self-titled debut is a pretty solid listen. I like "Peace Frog." But The Doors always remind me of 14 year olds who think that Jim Morrison is some kind of sage. So to me that definitely equates to overrated.

My thoughts on Pink Floyd are similar. I like Dark Side Of The Moon and the occasional other song, but most of their career bores me.

Ok, this is getting silly :x GRRRRR - Pink Floyd pushed the boundries of popular music just as much as the Beatles if not more so - Wish You Were Here is as good if not better than The Dark Side of the Moon - both albums still manage to sound pretty damn impressive 30 years after they were made - not to mention Syd Barrett practically owning psychedelic pop music with Bike, Arnold Layne and See Emily Play - and Animals, made in 1977 sounds more hard hitting and politically subversive today than anything Johnny Rotten and his mates came up with - which actually leads me to the most over rated band on the planet - the Sex Pistols :P

Agree wholeheartedly with Pink Floyd as one of the most overrated bands in the universe.

Us...us...us.......and them....them....them.....yawn....yawn.....zzzzzzzzzzz

Also think the Doors have a place on this list.

I'll pick: Yes.

These are mostly easy targets.

Lucinda Williams.

Edited once to say: Okay, just noticed the qualification "ever" on the thread topic, and I wouldn't put Ms. Lucinda on that level. I should probably just withdraw it, but hey.

I'm not sure Lucinda is well known enough to be considered overrated.

Queen - why does everyone rate that pompous piece of crap "Bohemian Rhapsody" so highly?

Abba - we alll hated them in the 70's, yet now it has become unfathomably fashionable to like them... I just don't get it I'm afraid!

Yes? No - Close to the Edge is brill as is Roundabout , Starship Troopers and most of Relayer - though I will admit Jon Anderson and his Total Mass Retain bollocky lyrics are kinda naff - but hes a great singer.

Queen? Well kinda - but Sheer Heart Attack is a great great guitar album - and the bit in Now Im Here that goes all stereo pan crazy is k classic as is the rest of that album - Bohemian Rhapsody I never really liked.

Abba? - finally I agree with someone. Utter bollocks - hated them then , hate them now and if I never hear Dancing Queen again it will be too soon. Music for girlie girls to dance around their handbags to (sorry ladies, :P )

Having defended the Progsters and offended the ladies Im off darn the boozer - its Friday after all.

A good thing about living in Sweden is that Dave Matthews probably doesn't outsell Jackshit here. So I wouldn't know if he's overrated.

I agree that Zeppelin is the most overrated band ever, but they DID have a fantastic drummer, so I'd go with Coldplay.
What this world needs is more silly men.
