Tower Of Movies

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Out -- The Usual Suspects -- a cool little movie, tons of dark fun and all, but a bit superficial and tricky, not quite worthy of the tower, IMHO ("H" is for "humble" btw...). It does, however, deserve a nice spot in the Cinema Chauteau, perhaps.

In -- The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp -- This list needs Michael Powell and Emeric Pressberger back on it. I have become a huge fan of their work over just the past few years. Though I only caught up with it last year, this particular movie has become an all time favorte, it holds an extremely special place in my heart and provides much grist for thought, argument, and historical cogitation. Also, if you are a loss at figuring out M. Scorsese's more recent films, particularly "Gangs of New York" and "The Age of Innocense" (and, probably, "The Aviator" which I'll probably see tonight), seeing these films will shed some light,

The Last Waltz - Martin Scorsese
Seven Samurai - Akira Kurosawa
Dr. Strangelove - Stanley Kubrick
The Searchers- John Ford
Vertigo - Alfred Hitchcock
A Streetcar Named Desire - Elia Kazan
The 400 Blows - François Truffaut
Only Angels Have Wings - Howard Hawks
Simon of The Desert - Luis Bunuel
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp -- Michael Powell and Emeric Pressberger

It's a standard pattern, isn't it? When a magazine runs a readers' poll on all-time best LPs, there's a preponderance of LPs from recent years (or when Q runs an article on best songwriters of all time, Mike Skinner is the most prominent face on the front cover). But hand it over to the real cognoscenti, and it's all from 30-40 years ago. Do they not make 'em like they used to?

Haven't seen Simon of the Desert, or not that I can recall. But will leave in in honour of the mighty LB. Deciding who to oust is now like choosing which of the wonders of the world to desecrate, so out with Kazan, and in with something from the stunningly recent late 80s with Wenders (titled in German here, in preference to the utterly crappy non-translation of 'The Wings Of Desire' - they copped out because English can't convey 'sky/heaven' in one word as 'Himmel' does). This is a flawed film, but in terms of cinematic magic and jawdropping imagination, it's a must. Stunning cinematography and brilliant music too. And a film that might, as it did me, have a profound effect on you.

Rules of the Game- Jean Renoir
Seven Samurai - Akira Kurosawa
Dr. Strangelove - Stanley Kubrick
The Searchers- John Ford
Vertigo - Alfred Hitchcock
Der Himmel Über Berlin - Wim Wenders
The 400 Blows - François Truffaut
Only Angels Have Wings - Howard Hawks
Simon of The Desert - Luis Bunuel
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp -- Michael Powell and Emeric Pressberger

I cannot begin to tell you how the Tower of Film we have now has degenerated in just a few posts. It's enough to make this classicist weep bitter tears...Right now I'm looking like the world greatest fake-American Indian actor, Iron Eyes Cody, in that old environmental. PSA.

At least "Rules of the Game" still stands...but it's only a matter of time before one of you philistines replaces it with "Office Space" or, heaven forfend, "Fight Club."
