Consistently Overrated Albums

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Consistently Overrated Albums

Post by Bob And Charlotte »

one sells millions of copies. the other is better, but stills forgotten. (even by some critics)

for example:
for Dire Straits Brothers In Arms read Dire Straits
for Steely Dan Aja read Countdown to Ecstasy
for Eagles Hotel California read Desperado
for The Bands The Band read Music From Big Pink
for The Byrds Mr Tambourine Man read Younger Than Yesterday (for Younger Than Yesterday read The Notorious Byrd Brothers :D)

your turn

I have several quibbles with this one. The Eagles represent so much of what I despise with their watered-down recasting of Gram Parsons' music as decadent navel-gazing and Aja is frickin' amazing and thoroughly deserves its place in the pantheon of seminal 70's rock albums. Also, as a Band fan, their eponymous album and their debut are both equally worthy of the hosannas. I also think that it is inaccurate to call Music From Big Pink "forgotten" by fans and critics alike when it is anything but forgotten. The Byrds didn't release a single bad album from '65 to '69 and Sweethearts of The Rodeo is pretty much the consensus pick as far as their definitive album goes. The ones you mentioned as more deserving get a pretty fair shake as classic 60's rock highpoints.

Steely Dan's Aja and Countdown are two entirely different records with virtually no musician overlap. Heck, even Fagen and Becker hardly contributed to the music of Aja...they basically conducted.

They are both groundbreaking achievements and could never be overrated by any stretch of the imagination. They are both heavily underrated, in spite of the great success of Aja.

Santana's Lotus Live and Santana's Welcome. Both underrated but brilliant. If I have the equation right, "Welcome" follows "Lotus" because even though it is underrated it is quantumly bettet (errr, mo betta).

XTC's Oranges and Lemons and XTC's English Settlement. Both underrated but English Settlement is the greater of the two recordings.

This is so very taxing on me...too many variables. I'm trying too hard, I suppose, even for a Republican.

For me, the most overrated album ever recorded is Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of The Moon"... I had been a fan up until the release of that album.

I find The Wall to be more overrated than Dark Side Of The Moon

Gulp. Rubber Soul.

I know many people love this record. You Won't See Me ruins this album for me. Too long.

Sgt Pepper is a close second. And I love the Beatles, mind you.

Ooo I couldn't agree more. Gosh that's an annoying record. I do like DSOTM, some classic stuff in there and frankly where I grew up it was an utter phenomenon, somehow one of those records that was more than just a record. My fave was always WISH YOU WERE HERE, however.

The Royal Scam remains one of their best, although it is difficult to choose a favourite with such a rich back catalogue ('Haitian Divorse' is just one of the highlights...)

>Aja is frickin' amazing and thoroughly deserves its place in the pantheon of seminal 70's rock albums

i do agree if you, but i only wish that all who loves Aja listen to CtE and reconize its power. oh, and i´m not an Eagles fan too, but if you want to buy one of their records, buy Desperado (which is much better than HC)

>I also think that it is inaccurate to call Music From Big Pink "forgotten" by fans and critics alike when it is anything but forgotten

you are probably right

>The Byrds didn't release a single bad album from '65 to '69 and Sweethearts of The Rodeo is pretty much the consensus pick as far as their definitive album goes

I do consider Mr. Tambourine Man a classic (the title track alone would have made this a must have for music lovers), but it was with Younger than Yesterday that they fully proclaimed their musical genius (as much as i love the space rock peaked on Fifth Dimension).

And the movie wasn't much better.

I was wondering if there was any toothpaste asociated with the tool to cleanse musical hygiene.

Evidently, that has been outsourced to you, Mr. Chair of Blue.
