Documentary evokes emptiness of celebrity

( extracts)

"Mayor of the Sunset Strip" is a movie about sex, drugs and rock'n' roll -- and celebrities, groupies, fame, gossip and the glittering nightlife of Los Angeles.

So why is it so sad?

The answer lies in the person it uses to look at all those subjects: Rodney Bingenheimer, a sixtyish elf in drainpipe jeans and bangs, who's been at the heart of the scene since the mid-'60s.

------------------------

There are pictures of Bingenheimer with Paul McCartney, John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix. Film of him with David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Debbie Harry. Tours of his packrat home, crammed with everything from Elvis Presley's drivers' license to an official Brooke Shields clothes hanger.

( which , curiously , does not list Elvis in a long cast list)

And here's a link to a review by, uh, a friend of mine. A really good pal, that's right...

And, btw, my friend didn't really it give ***** , though he loved the movie. He gave it ****1/2 and they bumped it up a half star. My good pal must choose his battles.

And, he tells me, he didn't mention EC because it's a blink and you'll miss him kind of a thing.

While this documentary holds limited appeal and importance in the grand scheme of things, I'm glad that it was made. Southern California natives grew up listening to Rodney Bingenheimer, and despite his harmless celebrity worship (he once boasted that Brian Jones had punched him out) there is something endearing and noble about him because he always sought out good music and put it on the radio. From time to time over the years I would tune in to his unique show and hear something brand new that I liked, and jot down the name of the song and the band or singer. He introduced many of us to EC in 1978 when he played a fantastic import single "Watching the Detectives."

Jill writes to listserv -

Did anyone watch the bonus footage of Mayor of Sunset Strip? Elvis and
Brian are interviewed together and talk at length about fame and
autographs and stuff like that! It's worth checking out.
