Stars Share Los Lobos' New 'Ride'
Elvis Costello, Tom Waits and Ruben Blades are among
the guests appearing on "The Ride," the forthcoming
new studio album from Los Lobos. Due May 4 from
Hollywood Records/Mammoth Records, the 13-track
collection is band's first self-produced title in a
career that stretches more than two decades.
"We're all very proud of this album," guitarist Louie
Pérez says. "It reflects our evolution as musicians
who have been playing together for a long time and who
have worked to absorb a lot of different musical
styles and artistic ideas during a long and enjoyable
musical journey.
"And," he adds, "it was fun to make music with some
good friends."
Costello adds vocals to a new version of "Matter of
Time," which originally appeared on Los Lobos' 1984
breakthrough, "How Will the Wolf Survive?" (Slash).
R&B great Bobby Womack helps the band remake his
"Across 100th Street," while Grateful Dead lyricist
Robert Hunter co-wrote the new song "Hurry Tomorrow"
with the band.
Others who add their talents to "The Ride" are Richard
Thompson, Mavis Staples, Dave Alvin (the Blasters),
Mitchell Froom, the Band's Garth Hudson, Café Tacuba,
Quetzal's Martha Gonzales and Willie G.
Los Lobos has a handful of spring tour dates on tap,
including a March 20 appearance at Austin, Texas'
South by Southwest music festival. Also featuring
Patty Griffin, the Mavericks, Old 97's and Ozomatli,
that Esquire magazine-sponsored show will be broadcast
live on XM Satellite Radio.
As previously reported, the band is also slated to
play this year's Bonnaroo Festival, slated for June
11-13 in Manchester, Tenn.

"How Will the Wolf Survive" is the seminal Los Lobos project that started it all, and it doesn't get much better. While some of their records are tilted more towards tradional latino influences, 'Will the Wolf' is an incredible balancing act of rock, ballads, and blues.
I can 'hear' Elvis singing "Matter of Time". It is one of the more melodic numbers on the record, and once it is in your head, it will be there for the day.
Los Lobos has recorded too many great records to mention. My collection includes:
How Will the Wolf Survive *****
Kiko *****
The Neighborhood ***
Colossal Head ****
By the Light of the Moon ***
If you want an excellent introduction, there is a Los Lobos compilation entitled "Just Another band from East LA ****". They mixed it up a little, so that it contains either live versions or alternate versions of some of the great songs from the earlier records. Sort of like an Elvis Costello Rhino Reissue Bonus Disc. Not completely.
Sort of.

Oooooo, goody!! I love that song. Oh, and Garth Hudson and Mavis Staples too??? I'm so buying this record.johnfoyle wrote:

Anyone who wants a crash course in Los Lobos could go out and buy JUST ANOTHER BAND FROM EAST L.A. (2-disc set) and KIKO and have a pretty nice handle on what makes this a great band.
Oh, I see the well-versed Mr. A has already said more or less the same thing; d'oh!

The Ride - Los Lobos
While not one of the best, this will be nominated for a Grammy. Whatever that might mean to you...
It is an astounding compilation of new and old Los Lobos songs characterized by Outstanding performances by all (Dave Alvin is under-utilized...the Blasters and Los Lobos shared audiences and musicians in the early days, and I wish that Dave was brought more to the foreground). Of course, Elvis interprets "Matter of Time" well, but I wish it was a little less restrained, and without the nightclub echo on the vocal.
My only reservation is that Los Lobos is a band that will send chills down your spine when they cut loose. They demonstrate a sort of "star-heavy' restraint with this recording. There are occasions when you just want them to kick down the fencing and let it all out, but they stick close to structure and show little if any of the occasional wreckless abandon that demonstrates their greatness. Think of Elvis Costello during the Get Happy tour years and think of Little Feat during the "Waiting for Columbus" era, and even Genesis (blasphemy!) during the "Seconds Out" tours...when they would approach the wall of the melodic structure and then just tear it to pieces. Sure, this is a studio album, and it is "star-heavy". But it is missing just a little of the spontaneity and freedom that moves the band into the creative stratosphere where absolutely no one else can go because of their unique sound.

Okay, I have had another week to listen to "The Ride" and I really do like the Dave Alvin song. It has a longer time-constant than most of the others on the record...it took me a little longer to appreciate it.
I retract a bit of the damper I put into the above comments about this record. It is really a strong, balanced record. One reviewer wrote that the TomWaits collaboration was the only weakness of the record, and I could not disagree more. It has "Rain Dogs" flavor and is a perfect counterbalnce to the rest of the recording. Another pivot pont in the albums success is the Los Lobos/Richard Thompson collaboration called "The Wreck of the Carlos Rey".
AT the top of the this thread, which has evovled into an Annex thread, I rated a few other Los Lobos records. This is rapidly approaching the upper echelon of their recordings.
Los Lobos is appearing live at the Anaheim House of Blues on Saturday, July 10th, 8:00. Tickets are remarkably affordable at 35$ per. General Admission/SRO. I am expecting a fantastic show.

I have read Los Lobos will cover Costello's Uncomplicated and Waits Jockey Full of Bourbon.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On August 3rd, Los Lobos will release Ride This: The Covers EP. Among the artists covered are Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Bobby Womack and Richard Thompson. Should be a great supplementary disc!

There must be dozens of songs besides "Uncomplicated" that I would think would be stronger candidates for them to cover. I am surprised by this, but eager to hear how they will take the Nick Lowe sound and adapt it to their own, unique sound.
