Well, say what you like about the rest of Canada, but I found Toronto to be a fun and cosmopolitan city with lots of internationl flair and yes, indeed, cheap and great restaurants, good bars and nice people.

AND superb snow removal in the winter!

Shabby: why is no. 10 a reason? Do you like that self-deprecation and lack of celebration of our place? When I went to Spain and met Spaniards, Irish and other people, I was really struck by how much they loved their countries, as opposed to the Brits always running theirs down. Mind you, this was in the height of Thatchers' reign of evil. Even so... I think this has changed a bit, as it's now very common to hear people celebrating the multifariousness of modern Britain, whichis a healthy way to bepositive about ourselves and reconcile ourselves with our past.

Love your positive list, anyway, great to hear it from the ex-pat who has a good persepctive.

10 reasons to love the UK, if we must refer to it as that, beyond Shabby's excellent list, and in defiance of her number 10:

1. Lots of cool people signed up to this message board from here.
2. Some great landscape.
3. Loads of cool musicians and bands from here.
4. Good humour (irony, self-deprecation, piss-taking).
5. George Orwell (all over the place right now, e.g. great 'life in pictures' programme tonight)
6. Footie, well Man Utd, anyway.
7. Cultural diversity, e.g. in music and food. 'What is Britain?' is an interesting question.
8. Good apples.
9. A great capital city.
10. Pluralistic wine culture.

Welcome home, BC, England is a smaller place without you! Have fun.

I guess it is that perspective that makes no. 10 important to me. I was brought up with the 'my country is the best' attitude and it wears with me. If someone you met was going 'I'm the greatest' I bet you'd run a mile. Years ago my aunt asked my new English husband 'How do you like America, isn't it wonderful?'. No, I really do love the fact that the Brits don't seem to know what a lovely little country they have got (despite the world system).
