EC´s best alt. versions of his own songs

Post by VonOfterdingen »

Hi all

I´m a sucker for edsel records reissues of EC´s classic albums. I even find some of the alt. versions as good as the originals. Is it just me?

Tears before bedtime; better than the original version

Town Cryer; on par with the original though a much different kind of song. I do like that blaxpotation sound :D

Big Sister´s Clothes; (Punch the clock, electric version) brilliant song. Can´t fail no matter which version (like the 2 on the Trust bonus disc)

Everyday I write the book; Really nice more timeless version on Punch the Clock re-issue

Human Hands; not that different but I like the lyrics :)

Battered old bird; not better of course but still nice

I find the alternate version of "Kid About It" much more moving than the standard version. And I get a kick out of the booze-soaked version of "Little Savage."

This isn't really alternate, its live, but I love the Accidents will Happen from the Hollywood High gig more than the original.

I really love The Long Honeymoon with just EC & SN. I also I perfer Poor Nepolean with Bill Frisell.
I wish that I could push a button
And talk in the past and not the present tense
And watch this hurtin' feeling disappear
Like it was common sense
It was a fine idea at the time
Now it's a brilliant mistake

Hmm, alt. version of Tears Before Bedtime better? I'd say that the country version is better, but the alternate Tears Before Bedtime is a mess.

I'll give it another chance, I admit I kind of dismissed it at first listen.

I for one hold "The Land of Give And Take" at high regard, but it certaintly isnt on the level of "Beyong Belief".

I agree that the the Imperial bonus disc version of "Tears Before Bedtime" is one of Elvis' best alternate versions. The country version doesn't do it for me at all, though I like the original Imperial Bedroom version.

"Every Day I Write The Book"! I'm surprised no one mentioned that yet. I like the alternate way more than the original for that one.

"American Without Tears No. 2" is one I enjoy a lot more than the original King Of America "American Without Tears."

"This Is Hell"
This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.

I like the alternate take of Hoover Factory better than the 'official' one.

Also, the demo of "The Comedians".

I like the Man out of Time alternate.
As well as most of the alts on Get Happy!!
It nearly took a mircacle to get you to stay
It only took my little finger to blow you away.

I like the original High Fidelity much more. I think he "dumbed it down" for the actual release.

I really like the fast version of This Year's Girl, but then again I'm a bit of a speedfreak. The alternative B Movie was really good live when played faster too.

Does anyone know if Elvis only ate amphetamines on tour, and that's part of the reason why those early Attractions albums sound comparatively sedate?

I love the alternate version of Battered Old Bird - purely for Bruce's bass and the alternate studio version of Watch Your Step. I wouldn't say I like either version as better as I could happily listen to them one after the other. They're both good in different formats.

I can't wait to see what other alternate versions come out on the reissues.

I have just been listening to a tape of Leeds in June 1981 when he sings the slow band version of I Can't Stand Up. Great stuff. He also did a version of I Got You. Not quite James Brown...

Back in 1984 he used to play the slow and normal versions of The Only Flame in Town in the same show and in 1986 on one of the Spinning Songbooks shows I have he played two different versions of Watching the Detectives.

I like his Alternate version more than his Real version. That sounds.
