What do you want to be remembered for?

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

What do you want to be remembered for?

Post by spooky girlfriend »

Hang on, guys, I promise this isn't morbid!

In just passing the two year mark from the death of my father-in-law, age 60, and the upcoming two year mark of my brother's death, age 32, I have been thinking about what these men left behind.

Obviously, neither was contemplating that their "time" was when it came, consequently both left behind much that we are still coming across - papers, personal items, etc.

We just finally got some tools from DrS's father and my sister-in-law is still finding things now as she gets ready to move into a new house. Probably the funniest just happened a couple of days ago.

My brother left a computer that he had "fried" and put aside for, well, I don't know what. My sister-in-law didn't know what to do with it and it has been sitting in our attic for months. Now follow me. DrS just gave it away to his ex-wife's husband who tinkers in computers, since he is a stay-at-home mom. :o So, when his ex called a couple of days ago to ask a question about her visit with the kids, she told DrS that they had found some "interesting pictures" downloaded on the computer.

So, there stands my husband, talking to his ex-wife about porn pics that my brother had on his computer. Pretty funny. And I'm thinking to myself, what would I leave behind that people would find and wonder about? What is it I think I would be best remembered for?

aw spooks, i know you don't mean it to be morbid, but it feels that way.

nevertheless, i shall depart this mortal coil at some point.

i hope to be remembered for my joy in life. if i left sometime soon (i don't really want to) i'd expect to be remembered for my love of Buffy, my sometime silly nature, and my ability to give to my friends w/o letting them walk all over me. (not that they'd mean to, but sometimes, if you don't put up boundaries, the needy will clean you out.)

my dad had porn on his computer too. i was actually pleased to see it there - i had at times wondered if he had completely dismissed that part of life, and i was glad to see he hadn't.

i have fanfiction on my computer. you'd have to read it to find out what it's about. :)

Raising two healthy, happy, spirited, and faithful children. That's it. Nothing else matters to me after it is all said and done.

I would be leaving behind lots of notebooks and little scraps of paper which would confuse and astound anyone who came across them.

And I hope people would remember that I loved them, in some way.

Perhaps slightly paraphrased....

"I don't want to achieve immortality through my work. I want to achieve immortality through not dying. I don't want to live on in human memory, I want to live on in my apartment."
-- Woody Allen

For me, well, I used to dream about being "immortal" in some way -- but now I think the goal is simply the leave a slightly more amusing and less vicious corner of the universe behind me.

I'd liked to be remembered as a good Mom by my son, a good friend by my friends (though that's something that needs work, frankly) and as the joy in life to one special person (ditto).

I'd like to be remembered as a giant pain in the ass to a few other 'special' people on this planet. It's not a long list, maybe ten people.

And I'd like to be remembered, or at least half-remembered, as the author of one funny book that made a few people think for a few days.

A thought-provoking question that deserves serious consideration, but the best I can come up with, is I just wouldn't want people to think I had been an idiot.

Honestly, that sums up my life--I'm just trying not to fall down!

This is an interesting thread to read, as I am trying to write my grandfather's obituary. If only he had told me before his stroke what he would have liked to be remembered for...but I think I know.

It's kind of trite, but I would like to be remembered as a good person by whoever wants to remember me! Hopefully someday that will be my kids and grandkids, etc...

As simple as it is...

For caring and helping others. This is one big freakin planet and there are enough horrible people, I like being one of the good guys.
