Doesn't Anybody Tape Shows Anymore?

Post by FAVEHOUR »

Frustrating to see setlists with new songs and interesting old songs, and nary a recording to be found. Even the cellphones seem to be pretty dormant, just a couple of YouTube videos (and they always tape the same tunes....). Ah for the good old days when most shows were taped by some enterprising person in the audience. I mean geez, Bob Dylan can't drive by a theater without someone recording it. Doesn't anyone care about preserving live Elvis shows anymore? Or did he deliver on that concept of inventing a jamming device that disables taping devices in the audience?

I used to take a notepad to every Costello show.
I'd get the complete, accurate setlist -- along with notes about many of the song performances.

I have, it appears, become jaded and/or aged.

I'll have a full report and setlist for the Atlanta Tabernacle show. No taping, though.

I wish EC would record his shows and sell them as Encores like Peter Gabriel had been doing since 2003, Or like Simple minds has done. Its such a shame since his setlist seems to vary from show to show. Also what happened with the idea of touring with Tesla? They are pro-taping I hear.

I taped the show tonight in Purchase.

I'll have it up on Dime by the weekend, I hope.

Kind of ironic that before tonight you had nothing new, and now you have 2 versions of the same show.

I'm in a quandary for the UK shows, minidisc, DAT or flash recorder.
Pros, - minidisc easy to edit, discrete, one I'm familiar with - cons - compression, most dime people not keen on it
DAT - pros high quality recording, no compression cons, not used too often before, bulky and not sure of battery life
Flash recorder - pros, easy to use even without external mikes, cons - nightmare to edit files in terms of song separation etc
Any comments folks ?

I'd go with the flash recorder. Maybe someone else can edit for you?

Like most of us, one has observed that it seems that show-attenders are enjoying shows rather than recording/sharing - quite right.

I confess that I cannot be arsed to Torrent anymore, and like most of us await (vainly) YouTube or e.g. mp3 etc kind generous sharings of Mr Costello's recent NEW songs. Or we shall await purchasing a new Mr Costello CD etc album which we shall play twice.

I am pleased he/everyone is having fun at his American performances.

Dimeadozen is a torrent index site. The shows are in flac format, but aren't downloaded in the conventional way. It's a little complicated, but once you learn how, the reward is an amazing variety of live music.

Register and then check out what's available.

So far, I have avoided 'doing the Dime' NY Purchase etc to obtain off-mic 'Josephine' to convert to friendly-sharing mp3. I once saw Costello in Bristol where he/they were great despite vilely buzzing left speaker-enclosure.

I would happily pay e.g. iTunes for '...Josephine', or for post-concert CD-DVD.

If I can learn file sharing with torrents, anyone can. It takes time but it's worth it.

I agree that sharing e.g. concerts is great, but I-a few others find it a drag to download e.g. c. 23 huge files in FLAC to obtain only 1 new one, perfectly acceptable as good quality .mp3.

I like a few others have had electric computers on for wasting hours trying to get people to share from us files so we can bump up our share ratio ...

I used to asap download/upload e.g. concerts, solely for e.g. 1 or 2 new songs.

Unlike some, I do not want 70000 live versions of same song, but would happily buy 1 version of new one.

I quite like Soulseek used legally for sharing commercially unavailable mp3, but accept others like FLAC-WAV concerts.
