Thanks for the tip, JF. Think I'll pass on the $300 VIP tickets but will enjoy the show nonetheless. The Tabernacle is a great old venue!

Well . . . got my tickets. I'm a bit disappointed that this is a general admission show as I don't really care to have to get to the venue several hours early and stand in line to get a good seat or spot on the floor. Oh well. It's still going to be a blast!!

Is the whole show general admission or just the floor? The few times I've been to the Tabernacle the floor is GA, while the balconies are assigned seating. Looks like only GA tickets are available for the presale. I'm going to wait till the regular sale tomorrow and see if I can get a good balcony seat.

I believe, for this show, the first balcony is designated for VIP ticket holders and the upper balcony is GA. I'll be a bit miffed if I have to buy additional tickets to get a seat.

That sucks. I may pass on the show if I can't get a guaranteed seat for less than $300.

Well next time I will wait until tickets go on sale to the general public! I ended up springing for tickets in section 201 of the lower balcony. The lower balcony are the best seats in the house, in my experience, so I'm happy to have the seats. Maybe the show will sell out and I'll find buyers for my GA tickets. A few years ago, EC and the Imposters sold out a two-night stand at the Tabernacle so it's not totally out of the question.

A great evening at the Tabernacle tonight!

This was the first time in many years that I've attended an EC show solo as Mrs. migdd had some activities with the kids that couldn't be missed. The drive from Clover to Duluth was a quick four hours. After checking into my hotel and grabbing a little downtime, I headed to downtown Atlanta and arrived at 4:30. Pulling into the Tabernacle parking lot, I was surprised to find three tour buses pulling in directly in front of my parking spot. A few folks were waiting around, copies of albums and cds in their arms, hoping to catch a glimpse of EC and cop autographs. Deciding to mill about for a bit, I sauntered over to the tiny throng of four or five patient fans and hung out for a while. After a short time, the Sugarcanes debarked their buses and entered the venue, all carrying their instruments and duffle bags. After 10 minutes or so and no sign of Elvis, I decided to cut out and wander around Atlanta until showtime. Upon returning to the venue (it was now about 6:45 with the show due to start at 7:30), I stopped by my car and noticed the same few people still waiting there after nearly two hours had passed! Amazingly enough, Elvis did appear and I bolted over for a quick handshake and autograph. What a great start to the evening!

The Tabernacle is my favorite place in Atlanta to see an Elvis show. EC has stated it is his favorite place to play in the city and acknowledged that during the show; he also relayed the story of how he and the Imposters were due to play the mighty Tabernacle (a turn of the century - 20th, that is - Baptist church) during the Momofuku tour but the show was cancelled due to and "act of God", referring to a rare tornado that swept through parts of Atlanta and did major damage to the Tabernacle. Tonight, the venue seemed about three-fourths full. Thankfully, no act of God was in sight.

Elvis and the Sugarcanes took the stage at 7:45 and were in fine form the entire evening, with EC's voice the strongest during the slower numbers, where he had room to stretch out a bit. The set list was similar to those of other recent nights but there were a few surprises. The biggest delight for me was the inclusion of Different Finger into the setlist. I've always had a soft-spot for this faux-country throwaway from Trust. Tonight it was transformed into a real country song, augmented by Jerry Douglas' searing dobro work. All of the new songs(written after SP&SC) really shone and to my ears were leagues ahead of most of the songs on SP&SC. I really expect the next Sugarcanes album to far surpass SP&SC, if the five new songs played tonight were any indication of the strength of the other songs on the upcoming release.

The show clocked in at exactly two hours, 27 songs.

I may write more about the show tomorrow but right now it's late and I'm more than a bit bleary-eyed. Here's the setlist:

Start 7:45pm

Mystery Train
All-Time Doll
New Amsterdam
Down Among the Wines and Spirits
Femme Fatale
Different Finger (!!)
Blame It on Cain
River in Reverse
Delivery Man
Before I Grow Too Old
Jimmie Standing in the Rain
Slow Drag with Josephine
Brilliant Mistake
Condemned Man
Friend of the Devil
EDIWTB
Don’t Lie To Me

Encore

Color of the Blues
Complicated Shadows
Mystery Dance
Poor Borrowed Dress (co-written with Jim Lauderdale)
Red Shoes

2nd encore

Sulphur to Sugarcane
Alison/He’ll Have to Go
Happy
The Race is On
PLU

End 9:45pm

Good Lord, don't you just love his version of Friend of the Devil with that band? I must have listened to the version of that from the Ryman show last year a million times on my iPod. Wish we could have been there, migdd....one day, one day....
