Heartless, Okkervil to do ‘ACL’ tapings

By Michael Corcoran | Monday, April 20, 2009, 04:17 PM

Austin-based bands Heartless Bastards and Okkervil River will this year ascend to the level of bands big enough to tape episodes of “Austin City Limits.” The 35th season of the KLRU-owned program began taping with Willie Nelson and Asleep at the Wheel in February.

Things will really get crazy during the ACL Fest, when Pearl Jam, Beastie Boys and Sonic Youth will test the rafters of Studio 6B. And longtime producer Terry Lickona just wrapped up Elvis Costello for the end of August.

This blog seems to indicate that Elvis will share a Nov. episode of ACL -

We won’t get to see the Heathens in Austin again until September for one show at Antone’s (new CD then maybe?). They are touring this country until then, touring Europe after that, then back home again in December. Check their schedule and go see them if you can. Meant to be seen live (or on Austin City Limits this November with Elvis Costello) (I will post a heads-up later).

AUSTIN, Texas — The Band of Heathens’ self-titled studio debut album brought the band from relative obscurity to playing 250-plus shows a year for their rabid fan base, as well as a coveted taping for this year’s 35th Anniversary season of Austin City Limits.

The year ahead holds much promise, starting with the worldwide September 15 release of One Foot in the Ether. In July, the band taped Austin City Limits, an opportunity that came to them when the program’s producer, Terry Lickona, first saw the group at the Americana Music Conference last September. He was amused that he’d traveled 1,200 miles to discover a band that lived in his backyard. The ACL episode also features Elvis Costello and will air November 7. The band will tour Europe in fall, following a Ryman Auditorium appearance the American Music Awards on September 17. And then it’s time to log miles on the odometer as they cross America for the rest of the year and into next.

Live Review: Elvis Costello and the Sugarcanes at Austin City Limits

With Elvis Costello, it's all about timing. The restless nature of the man's creativity seems to dictate that he never stay in one place for too long, be that physically or creatively. As such, fans hoping for a pass through Costello's greatest pop hits were likely disappointed at the setlists that emerged last week both at Austin City Limits and at Bass Concert Hall. We suspect, though, that they were in the minority. As fans of Costello's great mid-80's record King Of America, we welcomed the chance to see Elvis return to a genre he seems awfully good at given that he's not exactly a folk or country lifer.

As though he needed to highlight the oddity of a British millionaire playing American roots music, Costello arrived onstage wearing a purple fedora and a bespoke suit. To plant the sonic mood firmly in Tennessee, he began with the Sun Studios staple "Mystery Train," then proceeded to move from Memphis to Nashville with "Down Among The Wines and Spirits," a song he described to the audience as "showing how far one can fall, from the top of the Playbill to the spot just above the liquor license permits." His band was anchored by both Austin favorite Jim Lauderdale and Alison Krauss' dobro wizard Jerry Douglas, a testament less to Costello's fame than the fact that the guy knows his music and the experts in the field want to help him realize his vision.

The biggest surprise of the evening was that Mr. Costello found some time to work some deep album cuts from his debut My Aim Is True into the folk format. The ACL audience held a collective grin as the band took passes at "Blame It On Cain," "Mystery Dance," and "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes" over the course of the evening. The results didn't fundamentally change the tunes, but it was quite a lot of fun to see these great pop gems dusted off and re-imagined. Fairly conventional rock versions (sans drums) of newer tune "The Delivery Man" and Nick Lowe's "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" also found their way to the ACL stage, lightening the mood between some of the darker folk pieces about condemned men and hidden shame.

A few other highlights from the evening were two raucous readings of the ribald "Sulphur To Sugarcane," a lewd, barroom stomp of a number, and a series of duets with Patty Griffin including "Poisoned Rose" and "The Crooked Line." Overall, the crowd seemed to leave dazzled by Costello's warm demeanor and his showmanship, which is accentuated on a stage as small as ACL's. Even when working on an ostensible side project like this, it's easy to see why Costello is still producing vital and interesting work after 30+ years. How many others can say the same?

Dave Matthews Band Kicks off Austin City Limits’ Historic 35th Season
The new season of the award-winning PBS concert series AUSTIN CITY LIMITS premieres October 3 with superstar talent Dave Matthews Band. Making their first appearance on the show, Dave Matthews Band grab the full hour-long episode playing songs from their latest release, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King .

Earlier that week, on October 1, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum will honor AUSTIN CITY LIMITS, unveiling a historic marker at the ACL studio and officially designating AUSTIN CITY LIMITS an historic rock and roll landmark.

“Getting Dave Matthews Band for our 35th anniversary premiere was not only a coup…it was a grand slam,” said ACL producer Terry Lickona. “They showcase their new album, which is the best studio work they’ve ever done, and the band is at the top of their game. After years of touring arenas, you could tell they loved the intimacy of playing our show.”

“It was cool to bring the band up there,” said Matthews of playing on the famed ACL stage. “We were pretty excited about it and it didn’t disappoint.”

The strength of this season opener gives viewers of AUSTIN CITY LIMITS a good taste of what’s to come during this special anniversary season. Drawing from a deep talent pool, upcoming shows include a performance by the new rock supergroup Them Crooked Vultures (Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones) as well as performances by some of the biggest names in contemporary music including Pearl Jam, Kenney Chesney, Elvis Costello and Ben Harper and Relentless7. Season 35 will also feature a first-time dual performance by longtime ACL favorites, musical legends Willie Nelson and Asleep At The Wheel.

Amidst the abundance of established performers, ACL continues its tradition of presenting the finest in emerging talent, with upcoming episodes featuring M Ward, Andrew Bird, Madeleine Peyroux, St. Vincent, Esperanza Spalding, Heartless Bastards, Okkervil River and Band of Heathens. ACL will also feature its first hip-hop episode featuring renowned rapper Mos Def and the rising Somali-Canadian rapper/poet K’Naan.
