Spectacle (Season One) Blu-Ray/DVD release - 11/10/09 Canada

Post by The Deliveryman »

This website -- http://www.releaselists.com/index.html -- in it's August 3, 2009 update lists a Canadian Blu-Ray release of the first season of Spectable. The listed release date given is November 10, 2009.

A quick check on Amazon.ca confirms this -- along with a DVD counterpart -- as both are currently available for pre-order.

Can't find any evidence of a release anywhere besides Canada at this point. Hopefully other regions will be announced soon.

If you like at the price, I can't imagine that this is going to be a box with 13 DVD's.

They'd probably only need about four DVDs for 13 episodes.

The releaselists.com link describes this as the "complete series", which isn't a good sign for a second season.

well, the only taping i attended LOU REED was a lengthy over 90 minutes EASILY!!! so, i guess with spme outtakes not aired from the tapings, five is not a stretch.

The episodes have suddenly been removed DIME's trackers which would appear consistent with their policy on official releases.

good thing I'd already downloaded or traded the whole series :D

I'll still probably buy this for any extras, If I can find one here that is!

plus the box looks better than mine.

Two days after sweetest punch announces it here, Shore Fire puts out the press release:

Spectacle: Elvis Costello with. . . comes to the iTunes Store

The inaugural season of the internationally acclaimed music television series Spectacle: Elvis Costello with... is available now for download exclusively on the iTunes Store ( http://www.iTunes.com ).

Described by one reviewer as “maybe the best talk program about music ever made”, Spectacle blends the best of talk and music television to create a compelling, fly-on-the-wall perspective on the creative process with an extraordinary and eclectic array of guests joining host Elvis Costello to chat, perform and share their passion for all kinds of music, from rock to opera.

Those guests are: Elton John, Tony Bennett, Lou Reed, Julian Schnabel, The Police, Smokey Robinson, Diana Krall, Herbie Hancock, Jakob Dylan, Jenny Lewis, She & Him (Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward), Rufus Wainwright, Renee Fleming, Kris Kristofferson, Rosanne Cash, Norah Jones, John Mellencamp, James Taylor and even former U.S. President Bill Clinton, whose conversation with Costello about the meaning of music in his life is unprecedented – and fascinating.

Each of the 13 one-hour episodes, originally broadcast on CTV in Canada and Sundance Channel in the United States, is jam-packed with insightful interviews and once-in-a-lifetime performances, including numerous spontaneous collaborations between the host and his guests, from “Me and Bobby McGee” with Kris Kristofferson, Norah Jones, Rosanne Cash and John Mellencamp to “A Perfect Day” with Lou Reed to a “mash-up” of “Watching the Detectives” and “Walking on the Moon” with Elvis, his band and all three members of The Police (whose appearance on Spectacle was their final performance and interview together on television).

As part of the launch of this unique series, iTunes is offering an exclusive free download of one of Spectacle's many amazing musical performances – Elton John and Diana Krall's duet on Elton's “Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word”. This piece was taken from a special episode of Spectacle in which Elton John (one of the series' executive producers) actually guest-hosted and interviewed Ms. Krall.

Spectacle: Elvis Costello with... is available for $1.99 per episode in standard definition and $2.99 per episode in high definition. The complete season is available for $24.99 in standard definition and $36.99 in high definition.

Spectacle: Elvis Costello with… is a production of Rocket Pictures, SpyBox Pictures, Prospero Pictures and reinvention entertainment, and can be found on iTunes at http://www.itunes.com/tv/spectacle .

Spectacle is affiliated with the (RED) campaign to raise awareness and money
for the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa. In addition to giving clips of
the series for use in the (RED)WIRE subscription service, a portion of the
profits generated by Spectacle's iTunes sales will go to the Global Fund.

Video Service Corp (VSC) of Canada has announced that November 10th will see the DVD and high-def Blu-ray Disc releases for Spectacle: Elvis Costello with... - Season 1. Each format gets a 4-disc set running 650 minutes, at a cost of CA$54.98 SRP for the DVDs, and CA$74.98 SRP for the Blu-ray version. Complete details about the show, and the contents of the home video, can be found in the studio description below. At the bottom are images of the packages for both the DVD and Blu-ray:
Elvis Costello's aim has never been truer in thirteen up close and personal episodes of chords and conversation with superstar singers and songwriters including Elton John, The Police, James Taylor and John Mellancamp.

Shot last year at storied New York venues, Harlem's Apollo Theatre and NBC's 30 Rockefeller Plaza studios, Costello with his band The Imposters split each hour between colorful creative discussion and putting a new spin on classics like Purple Haze and Ballad of a Well Known Gun.

The show, conceived and produced by Canadians, is coming off terrific ratings and reviews on CTV while raising the roof on audience figures on The Sundance Channel in the U.S. The DVD will be released in both Standard and Blu Ray formats in a 5.1 mix supervised by Costello himself, and will feature over 90 minutes of special features including interviews and bonus jams the likes of which audiences have never seen.

SPECTACLE EPISODES FEATURE THE FOLLOWING STARS, EITHER INDIVIDUALLY OR COLLECTIVELY:
Sir Elton John - The Police - Kris Kristofferson - Rosanne Cash - Norah Jones - John Mellencamp - James Taylor - Diana Krall - Bill Clinton - Rufus Wainwright - Tony Bennett - Jenny Lewis - She & Him - Jakob Dylan - Herbie Hancock - Lou Reed - Julian Schnabel - Renee Fleming - Smokey Robinson

* All episodes are extended versions with performances not seen on CTV
* Four disc set with over 90 minutes of Special Features including Behind-The-Scenes interviews with Elvis Costello and other performers, Bonus Songs, and more.
* Bonus Songs cut specifically for the DVD include: Purple Haze, Ballad of a Well Known Gun, You Win Again, Beginning to See the Light, No More Tear-Stained Make-Up and more…
* Season Two is in pre-production and slated for appearances are the likes of Bono, Paul McCartney and others...

This is a historic TV series that is a must for all audiophiles.

That's great news about Bono and McCartney-- I predict that Season 2 will be even better than the first, now that the show has established itself...

(Can Dylan be far behind? Surely if Bob has given in and recorded an xmas album, he'll be willing to sit down with EC and sing a few songs, talk shop, etc...)

I'm particularly excited to see EC and Sir Paul sing together again. Their partnership was far too short-lived, and their live outings together have been too few. Part of me still holds out some far-fetched hope that they'll start writing songs together again and will actually make a joint album together-- wouldn't it be great to hear a SP&SC-style record with just EC and Paul on acoustic guitars, singing in harmony? I'll bet their episode of Spectacle will be as close as they get to that, unfortunately...

I ordered it from amazon.ca (it's significantly cheaper there than on amazon.com) on Tuesday evening with the two to four week shipping for a total of C$47.47 (c. £27). It arrived this morning (and there were no customs charges to pay)!

Yes I'm in the UK. Haven't unwrapped the box yet but there is no region information on the package anywhere that I can see. On the rear it just says DVD with CC (Closed Captioning) underneath.

I received the DVD set from Amazon on Tuesday. The first disc was loose inside the package and was badly scratched. I tried watching it, and it froze halfway through the Bill Clinton episode.

Amazon sent a replacement, which arrived today. The first disc was loose inside this one too! The scratching was not as severe, but it too froze, this time halfway through the Tony Bennett episode. So now I've requested a replacement for the replacement.

I think I'd consider the packaging annoying and impractical even if I hadn't received two damaged sets.

What a bummer!! Blu-Ray or DVD, ANCT? I'm ordering the blu-ray as a Christmas gift (to myself) and hope I don't run into the same issues.

Amazon has it for $46.95. Doubt you'll find it any cheaper anytime soon.
