Elvis's most gorgeous song?

Post by Neil. »

Was listening to Shoes Without Heels last night, and thinking how gorgeous it is.

What's your most gorgeous Elvis song? Swooniest, lovliest, gentlest? (I think it's slightly different from what is Elvis's saddest song - but the two usually meet halfway. I nearly said Motel Matches, but I think that's probably his saddest - though it is gorgeous too! Steve's compassionate organ touches barely soothe the pain. Hang on though - maybe Last Boat Leaving is the saddest?)

But no - that's the saddest. Contenders for 'gorgeous' I'd say are Shoes Without Heels, Other End of the Telescope, and Sleepless Nights. Any others?

Good Friday arrived,
the sky darkened on time
til he almost began to negotiate.
She held his head
like a baby and said
"it's okay if you cry."

Gets me every time.

I'll nick Town Cryer and Sleep of the Just from Fishfinger King and add Just a Memory.

Sad and gorgeous.
Second this selection unequivocably. It is the supreme example in his songbook where he subsumes the personal and by doing so he gives a haunting voice to a universal sentiment we all can empathise with while at the same time paring the musical accompaniment down to a memorable and elemental melody of psychological pain infused with a beautiful and touching self doubt.

Hard to do and he makes it look easy. One of those rare 'lightening strikes' in a career.

It always makes me stop and take notice when I hear it played. It is that arresting.
