Went down to Portsmouth on Tuesday with So Lacklustre to see Wreckless Eric and his new bride Amy Rigby for two sets at the Cellars at Eastney. They put on a very unprofessional performance in front of a crowd of about 25 people. And I mean unprofessional in the best possible way. They kind of traded songs - I would guess that about 70% were Eric's songs and the rest were Amy's - they dueted on everything. Just a tiny stage in a pub cluttered with two key board set-ups, two accoustic guitars, two electric guitars, a drum machine and an electric base. Eric was literally sitting on a phone book (on top of an amp) at his keyboards. Highlights included Reconnez Cherie, Joe Meek, Someone Should've Nailed Us Together, Same, Hit & Miss Judy (putting the electric bass to use), Kilburn Lane, Same, 33's & 45s, I Still Miss Someone, Till the Wheels Fall Off, Are We Ever Gonna Have Sex Again and Dancin' With Joey Ramone. They finished with Whole Wide World and Take The Cash (KASH). Great show. Lot's of funny stories, song lists and notes on scraps of paper - they never seemed to know which instruments they were supposed to pick up next.

It meant more to So Lacklustre that Wreckless Eric acknowledged his Eels t-shirt that he is letting on.

Yes, a good night at the Eastney Cellars was had by all 25 of us. A funny moment when we got down there just after 7.30. The pub was closed, and just as we were peering through the window the door opened and out come Eric & Amy + entourage. BWAP can't resist making a comment (something like "wow it's Wreckless Eric" but I' can't remember exactly what) and Eric says "I hope you've got tickets and haven't just turned up on the off chance".
The show was great, Eric had to get everyone to gather round at the start to make it look as though there was a crowd there. They didn't quite "duet on everything" as he did 33's and 45's on his own.

Last night went to see Paul Weller with Mrs SL on her birthday. The show was at the Bournemouth Opera House which is a newly done out venue with standing only on a wooden floor and surrounding balconies. We stood mid way back - stage centre, and as the venue is not too big we were still pretty close. Weller and his band were on good form, PW was in a good mood and even dealt with a couple of cock-ups in good humour. They played for about 2h15m including two encores and mixed up the setlist. An acoustic set of 7/8 songs midway through was excellent and then he rocked out for the final part of the show. The two Jam songs played were an acoustic The Butterfly Collector and a shit hot Eton Rifles, which sent the crowd into raptures. Other highlights included a fantastic acoustic version of Brand New Start, and ComeOn/Lets Go and From the Floorboards Up from his last album. They also played 6 or 7 from the forthcoming album which all sounded good, including one which was very Beatlesque, speaking of which, they finished the final encore with All You Need Is Love.

Here in Dublin this past Thursday I saw Bruce Springsteen 'n co. doing their usual stupendous , OTT, two 'n half hour show . On Friday I saw an even louder show, RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra with massed choirs 'n eight sets of kettle drums doing Berlioz Requiem (Grande messe des morts). Tonight I go see Jens Lekman 'n band - hopefully he's cheered up since May 17th-

Went to see Paul Weller on Friday night at Hammersmith Apollo which turned into a bit of a 50th birthday party for him. There were balloons being knocked about (I noticed they had Happy 20th/30th/40th bithday written on them!) and he played a fantastic set.

There were a few guests. His son Nat came out and played one song and someone else came out as well for another song (I didn't catch who it was). The highlight was the encores. Roger Daltrey came out to sing and play harmonica on The Who's Magic Bus (Weller was laughing away singing the backing vocal of "You can't have it") and then Noel Gallagher came out for The Beatles' All You Need Is Love. It's fair to say there was a possibility that Mr Gallagher had had a little drink beforehand. It was also funny to see Weller telling Noel the chord changes. Great night and one of those nights where you feel privileged to have been there. It was certainly the best gig I've seen of Paul Weller outside of his Jam days.

They played just over 2 hours.

Mr Weller has also given up smoking of late which explains the little bit of weight he's put on. He came out for the first encore with a lit cigarette and said "Well it's me birthday innit?". I wonder if he'll get fined for smoking on stage or if Hammersmith & Fulham council will politely remind him that there are no smoking laws in place

Otis - Eton Rifles was superb. This and Butterfly Collector have been the only Jam songs played on the tour. The new band was pretty good in my view. It'll be interesting to see if it's the same band in November when I see him again.

I also said hello to a bemused Mick Talbot on the way out but that was more down to me!

This sounds great. Has he put on weight? Didn't notice on Later - thin as ever. New songs sounded good. Am tempted to buy my first ever Weller solo LP on the strength of two absolutely rave LPs. I love the idea that he's indulged himself a bit, followed his muse and come up with something really out of the ordinary. I've always loved the man, but so much of his solo output strikes me as just dull.

If you don't have any solo Weller albums then the Wild Wood and Stanley Road Deluxe Editions are well worth getting. The Modern Classics singles album is pretty good too.

Some of his solo stuff (eg Heliocentric and Illumination are worth avoiding).

Typically hilarious AP Guardian review, with typically most of it not about this record. All the reviews are saying the same: it's bonkers, it's very much unexpected, it's brilliant. I'm very much tempted to buy it on the basis of this. Outside of Joy Division, The Jam were my favourite teenage band, and I'd love to be buying Weller (though not 'Welder'!!!) again.

Wow, great trip, and how fantastic if you get to see Pollini playing a show of Debussy and Chopin. Sounds almost too good to be true - one of the world's greats playing a great selection from two of the best piano composers. I have the impression that Pollini is pretty low profile these days, though I don't really follow what's happening in classical music as such. But he recorded loads in the 70s etc. and I have some great ones. I spent two hours in Vienna in March. Wish I could have stayed a night, but sadly didn't. Lovely town though. Amazingly grand and imperial in parts. Had some awesome cake.

Yazoo - Newcastle City Hall, 5th June 2008

A welcome return to the boards after 20+ years, yet they both look exactly the same! Although time has improved Alf's wonderful voice, it has also removed what little stage presence Vince may once have had.

Interestingly, they both left the stage while an instrumental played, by itself! Also, there were more technicians off stage than 'musicians' on (ie 2 performers, but 4 on the desk front of house, and 2 in the wings) - I suspect that all Vince does for each song is press Start on his laptop, and then browse the net while Alf sings her heart out.

With only 2 albums to draw on it was never gonna be along show, and at 1hr 15mins the £45 ticket price seemed a little steep. However, the large gay contingent didn't seem to mind, and at least they are better dancers than you usually get at a 'rock concert'.

Yaz is doing several dates here in the States, and even had to add a third date after the first two sold out. My wife is a fan and I thought about getting tickets until I looked at our calendar.

Moyet's latest solo album in quite pleasing.

Pollini was just sublime. The way he paces the pieces and builds up to a momentum is just astonishing to behold. Like Martin back in Dublin we dashed into the venue from rainy sky , after days of looking at old buildings. The 15 of us took up a excellent centre row of the stalls in the ornate, gilt laden hall. After the progamme Maurizio returned for four encore pieces, more Debussy and Chopin. Then it was of to another hidden , secret eating place down some backstreet for some more enourmous servings of meat dishes , leaving us staggering back to our hotel at about one in the morning. Vienna is going soccer crazy , with huge screens desecrating the public spaces. In a few hour we get a coach to Prague, leaving all of it behind.

Brilliant! Sounds like a great evening. I loved Vienna, the few hours I spent. So grand, so Central European. Prague is astonishing. Great combo!

I have to go and see Radiohead in London in two weeks or my life won't be anywhere near complete. I love In Rainbows even more with time, and dog-walking with it on the iPod is just perfect. Let me at it!

Well I don't know how come they aren't sold out, but both London nights had tix, and am off with my oldest chum and his bird to see them on 25th. Can't bleeding wait. Literally the band I most want to see and haven't. Will look forward to Bat For Lashes as support. Know nothing of Victoria Park or how it will be. All I know is that hearing Weird Fishes et al live is going to be utterly fabulous.
