I didn't know this was happening, but turns out Patti Smith is playing the pretty smallish (1,200 tops) Cambridge venue The Junction later this month and a friend has a ticket for me. Cool. Never seen her live. Never listened to enough of her stuff. Always admired her.

Saw Ryan Adams Saturday night at the North Charleston Performing Arts Centers. Great show. Ryan was in great voice, the band was stellar, and the harmonizing to die for. Lots of stuff from Cold Roses, a few early chestnuts, and a few from the new album. No acoustic or mellow stuff, everything was full band and full on.

I'm seeing Springsteen tonight. I wonder if there will be a repeat of this "surprise" from last night's Ottawa show:

Id love to be seeing Springsteen, but his "American" tour seems to consist of New York and LA.

Unfortunately the Arcade Fire cameo proved to be a one-off for the Ottawa show. Thankfully (and not surprisingly), Bruce and the band managed to put on a stellar show. It's clear that he still feeds off the audience and loves every minute he spends up on stage. Highlights for me included the rocking electric version of "Reason To Believe," "Incident on 57th Street," and "American Land," but there was never a dull moment.

Im going to see Bruce in Copenhagen the 8th of december and im thrilled that Thundercrack is part of the set-list. I hope he keeps it that way

Richard Thompson Band - Sage (Hall 1) 16th Dec 2007

Awesome!
2 hours of great songs, blistering guitar, and some wit.

Highlights were many but, oh the joy when, during a two song solo slot he followed 1952 Vincent Black Lightning with .... Who Knows where the Time Goes !!

The band features long time buddies Danny (no relation) Thompson on double bass, Pete Zorn (saxes, flute, guitars, vocals) and Michael Jerome (drums).

They had fun, and so did we.

Can I tell you how great The Raspberries were in NYC this past weekend? Easily, one of the best rock and roll shows I have ever seen. I can't believe how great they sounded, vocals and music. They played an awesome set of Raspberries songs and also included "Ticket to Ride" and a blazing rendition of "Substitute". Eric Carmen has one of the most powerful voices I've ever heard live, I'm so glad I got to see him. I'm sure not everyone will appreciate this, but Eric and the band even did "All By Myself" which was absolutely incredible, complete with piano solo and all. They will perform in Cleveland again in Dec. I would go again if I could!

Patti Smith at the fairly small Junction in Cambridge. Great to see a 60 year old legend still full of fire and brimstone, looking younger than her years, moving like she's a lot younger, in great voice. Opened with Redondo Beach. Lots of old classics, Gimme Shelter and Smells Like Teen Spirit from her recent covers (mostly pretty obvious choices) collection Twelve, Perfect Day, which isn't on it. Unsurprisingly the higlight was a beautiful, passionate Because The Night, which she dedicated to the monks of Myanmar (though they seem to have reverted to Burma here of late), 'becuase I love them'. Lots of chat, especially about having tea with the fellows at King's College (she brought a napkin to prove it). Was she getting an honorary degree?

It was great to see her, and so happy on the stage.

Saw Josh Rouse and his band tonight here in Toronto. Great show, though the audience surprised me - I expected Rouse fans to be a lot more muted, but many of the people at the show were actually quite loudmouthed and rowdy. Go figure.

Quite good - very faithful to the original, though thankfully Rouse made no effort to imitate Dylan's Nashville Skyline-era voice.

John Hiatt - Sage Gateshead, 31/10/2007

2 hours of solo Hiatt, accompanying himself on various guitars, with two songs on piano. Played a couple of new songs, which seemed a little too twee and sentimental for this corresondent*, but the rest was grand stuff.

Maybe it was just me, but it seemed Mr Hiatt was playing Heart of Gold (including the harmonica breaks) whilst singing Perfectly Good Guitar. That's talent for ya.

What a voice! The man's got soul.

* I once tried to introduce 1st born to 'an underrated talent ... excellent songwriter ... you'll love him'. Unfortunately, the next song to play was My Dog & Me !! She's not trusted my judgement since.

Saw Muse a few weeks ago and Arcade Fire last night.

Muse was ok but too mechanic while Arcade Fire delivered a dynamic performance all though there was no need for half the band cause the horns and strings drowned in a wall of sound. Didn't hear those horns once... Still Wake Up and Tunnels were fantastic.

Bad acoustics, or just badly mixed? I've not heard this said of them before. Can't to see them Saturday week. High hopes of it being in my top 10 if not 5 of gigs ever...

Mostly bad acoustics i think but it was not the best place for that kind of concert (small sportsarena). But still - they seem to play all the instruments at once all the time and nobody gets any soloes which is a shame. Still a good show though.
