Length of North

Post by BlueChair »

Is it just me, or is North a really short album? It seems to whizz by pretty quickly.

It's short. And I'm glad. That's not a slam. I just think it gets in, gets out, and makes its point. Much more would be overkill.

I second that. Some of EC's stuff is overlong. ATUB, 12 tracks, superduper. WIWC, 16 tracks (over here anyway) too long. I never subscribed to the cd thing that just because you had 75 minutes, you should fill them. All records should be 40-45 minutes, or shorter.

it's just the right length. i have to agree that WIWC was ruined by the fact that it was waaaaaayy too long. If EC had dropped 4 or even 6 tunes, it would have been a much better record.

I would have definitely left out Dust 2, Dissolve and Oh Well. There not necessarily bad tunes but they seem superfluous to me.

I agree I think that North is just the right length. I can listen to the whole record in one sitting, plus one or two of the extra tracks, on my train ride home.

Does anyone else but me REALLY like the song Impatience?

I guess that was kind of my point. Why not just put all the "extra" tracks on the actual disc?

In this case, I think the extra tracks are not in keeping with the mood of the album, so it was appropriate to keep them off. Of course, I'm sure they'll be released on some EP that we'll be able to purchase for a reasonable price ;)

I do! I voted it as my favourite track although I had to ask if it counts as it's a bonus track. It's in another thread.

i agree with blue chair.

i think the extras shoulda been placed at the end of this album.
maybe with a python-like interlude telling you the album is now over.

north is way too short, actually.
i find that just as i start getting into it is over. i do not think shite should be put in for the sake of 'e x t e n d i n g' but I woulda liked more.

as far as 'wiwc' if i find i am kinda pressed for time i start at soul for hire and go through to the end.
that makes a nice album that way, too.
oh, i useta be disgusted
now i try to be amused

What about having 7 minutes of silence after I'm in the Mood Again, and then tacking on North and Impatience?? You know that old chestnut.

What is Impatience like anyway? Is it a rock song?

I think all his future releases should be packaged like the reissues. The album on one disc and the b-sides and bonus material on the other.

Another excellent 40 minute album just out is the latest by Shelby Lynne, Identity Crisis. For the most part its just her and a guitar. It's a great return to form after that ghastly album she made with Glen Ballard. A few of the tracks slightly rock out a bit, its just the right length. That and the new My Morning Jacket are getting heavy play with me at the moment.
