RIP Tom Snyder

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

RIP Tom Snyder

Post by BlueChair »

SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- Talk show host Tom Snyder, whose smoke-filled interviews were a staple of late night television, has died after a struggle with leukemia. He was 71.

It's easy to make fun of Tom Snyder (Dan Aykroyd did a particularly spot-on job in the early days of Saturday Night Live), but you have to hand it to him for trying to have serious conversations with the likes of The Sex Pistols and Charles Manson. My generation knew him more as the dry host of The Late, Late Show before Craig Kilborn took over but thanks to recent DVDs I was able to see clips from The Tomorrow Show as well.
This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.

He was the consummate nerd-- i.e., he had the knack of making everyone seem cool by comparison. You always felt a bit embarrassed for him, even while being grateful he was talking to such a compelling guest. For example, check this.

Here's one with a dentally incomplete James Westerberg discussing the Apollonian/Dionysian dynamic, among other things (too bad they don't include the musical clip!)

Watching a guy like this go really hurts, because journalism - in particular, live interviews, have gone to shit. He was unique.

Wow, a lot of people passing away today. Legendary SF 49ers coach Bill Walsh as well. Always seemed like one of the good guys - the rare example of a non-meathead football coach.

In his Video WatchBlog, Tim Lucas offered some insightful thoughts about Tom. . .

Just scroll down until you get to the Snyder piece. Didn't know that Tom had appeared on an episode of The Rifleman!
