Cliff Claven - Cheers - by far my favorite ever.
Tim Conway - McHales Navy
Major Frank Burns - Mash
George Castanza - Seinfeld
Ed Norton - Honeymoners
Barney Fife/Floyd The Barber (tie) - Andy Griffith Show
The list is not complete without Archie Bunker, but I cannot in good conscience bump anyone above.

Great exchange between Jennifer Marlow's stud boyfriend (his name was "Steel") and Les Nesman:Boy With A Problem wrote:Les Nesman might be the choice there. Just thinking about the "turkey drop" is cracking me up right now.pophead2k wrote: Johnny Fever - WKRP in Cincinnati
Steel: "Good to meet you. My name is "Steel""
Les: "Hmmm. Steel. That's an unusual name..."
Steel: "Yes, it is. I like to think a persons first name says a lot about the quality of the person it belongs to. " But I'm sorry, I missed your first name"
Les: "Les.................Les Nesman"

Reggie Perrin
Basil Fawlty
Both Mitchell and Webb in Peep Show (let this be one!)
Larry David in Curb
Father Ted
Both Frasier and Niles
Peep Show series 3 is fabulous. Tonight's barbecued dog-eating episode had me crying my eyes out. Perfect.
Why 6? ('Why not?', I hear you reply.)

It was going to be 5 but I couldn't leave out Ted Baxter. But, as I antcipated, there have been a bunch of excellent additions that might have made it to my list - Eddie Haskel, Floyd the Barber, Elliot Carlin, Uncle Fester and Nick Yemena being particulary good choices. And I just don't know the English shows well enough to comment. Larry David - tough call there - I already had George on the list, and I never quite thought of Curb as a situation comedy.Otis Westinghouse wrote: ('Why not?', I hear you reply.)

US: light on nostalgia...
Fred Mertz
Karen Walker
Red Foreman
GOB Bluth
Gomez Addams
Bobby (King-of-the) Hill
Don't know nearly enough UK ones but here are my two faves:
Sir Humphrey Appleby
Reginald Perrin (hadn't thought of that show in ages, loved it)
