What shows to look for?

Post by Chrille »

For someone new to E.C trading. What shows should I be on the lookout for if my main interest is E.C & The Attractions (or the imposters)? Good sound is preferred.

I got a show from the Spike tour featuring E.C alone which was nice and had great sound. I also got the one from Palladium in -81, amazing set and show, but the sound was rather bad, imo.

But maybe this forum is only for linking to E.C shows that pop up on the web. Sorry if such is the case :p.

EC live recordings

This site is a useful resource:

http://www.elviscostello.info/disc/bootlegs/index.php

Many well-known boots derive from soundboard or FM broadcasts, with clean sound. Here are a few to look for:

This is Tomorrow
The Gangster Is Back
Aging Gracefully
Brilliant Parade

That's a very very difficult question to answer Chrille.

It all depends on what you want I'm afraid. There are great quality bootlegs around now and as Elvis changes the set (sometimes dramatically) each night, the simple answer can be to go for the particular songs you like. Otherwise you end up hooked and getting almost all of the shows from a particular tour just because he changed the words of one line at one show, or interpolated two lines of another artist's song at another show etc etc. It happened to me and I'm still addicted!

If you're trading ask about the quality - every Elvis fan I've dealt with has been honest about this.

Hehe, well I don't have anything besides the ones I mentioned at the top. I've browsed through most of the shows in the list and there haven't been any particular tracklists that have made me go "oh I want that one!" when compared to others. Thanks for the advice and suggestions, but if you can recommend something "every EC trader should own" please do.

How about something similiar to the Palladium show:

Only with better sound perhaps?

I suggest the 'Costello & Nieve box set'

Perfect sound, perfect concert.

Hopefully, this will be of some help. The number of performances might seem overwhelming, but David Bowie's had a long and fruitful carreer, and there's quite a lot of quality material to choose from. Suggestions for new entries are welcome. I've tried not to let my antipathy towards some of the set lists influence my judgement

Simply because a bootleg's not listed here does not mean it's not worth your time and/or money. My goal is to list only the most essential, the ones you really can't afford missing out on.

There are also a few essential bootlegs that do not primarily contain concert performances:

1) The early BBC radio sessions. Released as:
Bowie At The Beeb (official! etc.
Go to the BBC thread in the Bowieaudio vault to download BBC recordings not featured on Bowie At The Beeb.

2) The Scary Monsters demos. Released as:
Glamour, Vampires Of Human Flesh, Monsters To Ashes etc.
Contains outtakes, demos and early versions from the Scary Monsters recording sessions, plus (un)related bonus tracks.

3) The Outside outtakes. Released as:
The 100pcb 72-minute version, 9. Outsiders etc.
Contains outtakes from the Outside recording sessions, from a stolen tape reel. There are many versions floating around - the common versions are variations on the same base; a collection of snippets posted online by 100pcb. The full 70 minute version is sadly not in circulation.

4) The Omikron "soundtrack". Released as:
Omikron The Nomad Soul etc.
The music here is primarily gathered from the Omikron video game, to which David Bowie wrote the music. This is highly interesting - instrumentals, vocal tracks, even a few "bonus tracks" such as No One Calls and We All Go Through - and a few remixes. An oddity.

You'll also find a bunch of compilation bootlegs with early recordings of varying quality. The Forgotten Songs Of David Robert Jones, A Letter To Hermoine, Freddie & The Dreamer (Arnold Corns), From The Vaults Of Mainman, Pierrot In Turqouise, Space Oddities... many of these are well worth checking out.

Finally, do yourself a favour and buy the two main official collections of early material - The Deram Anthology and Early On.

Great Bowie list, making an E.C list sounds like a good idea.
