Interesting. Could also have something to do with people not being tied to a particular area perhaps, as Otis suggests has been the case in Poland. In any event, regional accents are quite common here. Even a place like the Pittsburgh/Western Pennsylvania area has its own bizarre lingo and accent.

Virginia is full of 'em.
People in far southwestern VA have a very bizzare accent. Practically indiscernable to me. Then you have the slow drawl here close to the West Virginia border. People from northern VA over-pronounce their o's. I could go on.

Perhaps I'm wrong and the US can match England for accent variety - at least per capita, if not per mile.

Btw, didn't mean to be hard on all folks with a broad Australian accent. Far from it, it just annoys me that too many people try to imitate it and adopt it and/or wear it like a badge. They think it makes them more Australian.

Let's put the accent back on photos and let me share some images from a fancy dress party I was at recently . I donned clerical garb to , fleetingly, give in to my mother's wish to have a priest in the family -

I'm guessing from the group photo that it was a competition to see who could most look like a paedaphile.

Then you see the beach front under some fabulous clouds , followed by some views of the old town , taken while T.& M. looked at clothes and I ate cake.









None of the photos I have of the apartment do it justice. It was correctly judged that it wasn't big enough for my ego so I was , for the first night, booked into nearby seminary , where I posed , suitably
contrite.

Excellent pictures John. Nice is great - though I almost destroyed the rental car there. Agree about Grant Wood - and it doesn't end with American Gothic; I saw an exhibit in Worcester, Mass a few years ago and was hugely impressed.
