RIP Dave Brubeck 12/5/12

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

RIP Dave Brubeck 12/5/12

Post by Jack of All Parades »

I have just seen word that yet another jazz giant has passed- just one day short of his 92nd birthday. A virtuoso at the piano and a tremendous improvisor and ambassador for the music form. Cannot begin to count the hours of musical pleasure he has provided me. This piece is ubiquitous but it still catches the joy and intellectual high spirits his music had at its best:

Yeah, I was hooked on a best of Brubeck tape I had in my teens. just a momentary snatch of Take Five with that amazing Paul Desmond sax sound was enough to remind me of the genius of the man. I got my head round what 5/4 time was by playing along on the drums with that song on the cans.

That clip is great. They stick to the familiar and timeless opening melody (at a cracking pace) but then the solos are completely improvised and unfamiliar. Shame Joe Morello doesn't do one on the drums. Love his shades!

And of course there's the gorgeous 7/4 time Unsquare Dance. Love this montage!

Dave's playing them now in a huge, curved construction in the sky created by Oscar Niemeyer.
There's more to life than books, you know, but not much more
