2ND CHANCE for no response threads

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

2ND CHANCE for no response threads

Post by bambooneedle »

HOW IT WORKS

Threads that do not get a response by the time they disappear from Pg. 1 of The Annex, get a 2ND CHANCE. Here!

To respond to or comment on a post (as reposted here) -- perhaps ruminate on just why it got no responses :lol: -- you might quote it in your post, use the thread title as subject, etc.

For now, these are the 'no response' thread posts from Pg. 2 (minus the RIPs, too many to post at once and too depressing):

This should be great fun this summer.

Post subject: "The Band" a forty some year template for EC
Posted: Sat Jun 26, 2010 11:19 pm
Christopher Sjoholm wrote:It has been suggested by Poor Deportee, in another thread, that he would like to see EC pull out the stops and produce a solid record with a focus on place and themes, in this case Victorian England and the beginning of the Empire's decline. I offer a supreme record as a template:one that has given me emotional and musical sustenance for over forty years- The Band's "The Band". This album has consistently been in my top 10 list of desert island discs since my first acquaintance with it in 1969.

I do not know if it is the judicious usage of the pentatonic scale with its five notes mirroring the black keys on the piano in the songs, but the sound on this album is distinctive and rarely replicated in modern pop music. There is wonderful virtuosity as the musicians move from instrument to instrument and meld their voices in call and response or harmony vocals within the set pieces created in each song. No one tries to outshine the other player; they work as an ensemble and use each musician's strengths to enhance all the songs. No one does flashy solos; the music flows from its ensemble structure.

There is not a single weak song on this record. Each song evokes a musical past that is filled with longing, sexuality, fun, work, pain and a sense of place. Characters abound: Rag time Willie, the grandfather in "When You Awake", the individual southerners dealing with the end of the great war and their defeat. The musicianship is extra-ordinary- you have Levon's sinuous and evocative southern drawl and his distinctive slap drumming, Richard's mournful tenor[ I'm a thief and I dig it"] and barrel house piano styling, Garth's creative horn and organ fills that add such texture to individual songs, Rick's driving bass lines that propel the material along with Levon and Robbie's 'chop' guitar lines that I have never heard equaled by another player[listen to his two guitar parts on "The Unfaithful Servant" and "King Harvest"- the subtlety and economy is awesome.

This is an album of restraint and understatement which catches a feeling and a texture for a past America that I never tire of hearing and hanging out in. This is why I suggest it as a template for EC if he were to act upon Poor Deportee's suggestions. These are concrete songs built honestly and peopled with 'real' situations, feelings, emotions and characters. There is no 'purple' disingenuous excess to clutter up the songs. Most importantly, this is 'real' music that has been 'lived'[that is felt, digested and transformed] by musicians who are taking great joy in playing it. As Rick sings 'this ain't no joke, last June my whole barn went up in smoke". That is how I feel about this record; it is incendiary in the best sense as subsequent playings have 'burned' it into my conscience.

Let's get some discussion on the difference between "live and let live" and "live and let die"...I'm curious to know what you music analysts think of this one.

Robert Palmer's Island Records catalogue reissued
sweetest punch wrote:http://theseconddisc.com/2013/08/01/rob ... -reissues/

Edsel Reissues Robert Palmer’s Island Discography for Every Kinda People

One of the most truly odd omissions in catalogue history, the lack of expanded reissues for Robert Palmer’s iconic Island Records catalogue will finally be rectified by Edsel in August.

Palmer’s nine albums for the Island label will be collected onto four two-disc sets, all remastered and featuring a large swath of bonus material. (The albums are grouped in twos, with the exception of a set collating Secrets (1979), Clues (1980) and Maybe It’s Live (1982).)

Taken together, they represent one of the most original British rock and soul voices of the ’70s and ’80s, from the confident blue-eyed soul of his early albums, featuring backing performances by Little Feat and The Meters, to the synthpop-influenced tracks of Clues (aided in part by Gary Numan) and, finally, the MTV-shined Riptide, featuring most of his bandmates in The Power Station (Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor and CHIC’s rhythm section, bassist/producer Bernard Edwards and drummer Tony Thompson).

It’s also a discography that’s practically begged for some sort of expanded editions in the modern CD age. (Island remastered the catalogue in the early 2000s, before Palmer’s passing, and Culture Factory recently took to giving several of his discs the vinyl replica treatment on CD.) Still, one has to wonder if Universal knows just what they have on their hands; though Edsel’s work can be at times brilliant, it seems strange that an artist of this caliber would be licensed to a third-party and rather casually lumped together as two-fers. (Very little of these albums, as grouped together, make much thematic sense; a similar situation was at play when Edsel reissued Palmer’s latter-day works for EMI in the same manner.)

All the same, it is nice to see Palmer’s material from this time period get the expanded treatment it deserves, and with a considerable handful of bonus material – some 25 bonus tracks in all, seven of them previously unreleased and the rest largely new to CD.

After the jump, you’ll find pre-order links and track lists for these four sets, which will be available in the U.K. on August 26.

It seems the EMI catalogue has already been reissued by Edsel:

http://www.superdeluxeedition.com/news/ ... rom-edsel/

Having recently mused on the fact that Robert Palmer has been somewhat forgotten by the music industry, it was a pleasant surprise only days later to learn of some new reissues coming from Edsel Records in November.

The Demon Music imprint will be re-issuing all of Robert Palmer’s EMI era albums, but curiously, the records in question are being paired and released as two-CD sets. The configurations are as follows
• First 2CD set: Heavy Nova (+ bonus tracks) coupled with Don’t Explain (+ bonus tracks)
• Second 2CD set: Ridin’ High (no bonus tracks) coupled with Honey (+ bonus tracks)

Heavy Nova (1988) comes with four bonus tracks, two remixes of the US number two, Simply Irresistible (Extended Mix and E.T. remix), the ‘Wed 9PM Mix’ of Change His Ways and Nova, a non-album track that was originally the B-side to Simple Irresistible.

Don’t Explain‘s (1990) extras include 12-inch remixes for all three singles (I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight, Mercy Mercy Me/I Want You, and Happiness, along with three further non-album B-sides in Deep End, Oh Yeah and All Shook Up.

Ridin’ High (1992) is the standard 16-track release and Honey (1994) is appended with two remixes of single You Blow Me Away (Remix Edit and Alge Mix), the ‘Pinaxa Mix’ of Know By Know, and non-album track In The Stars.

The pairing of these albums is interesting because Don’t Explain and Ridin’ High are really the natural bedfellows, but have been denied this partnership, probably due to commercial considerations. The second half of Don’t Explain is almost entirely made of the jazzy ‘big band’ style arrangements that Palmer would go on to explore fully on Ridin’ High. Indeed, Aeroplane – an superb Palmer composition – appears on both albums in quite similar arrangements.

Heavy Nova is well known because it benefitted from the momentum generated by Riptide, the last Island Records album, and Palmer’s commercial breakthrough, thanks to Addicted to Love and I Didn’t Mean To Turn You On. That’s not to say that Heavy Nova doesn’t contain big hits of its own. Simply Irresistible was a massive US chart success, although those in the UK were more enamoured with She Makes My Day, which broke into the top ten in 1988 (incredibly, Simple Irresistible didn’t make the top 40). Honey, the final EMI album, wasn’t a big success with only minor hits in 1994.

These reissues will be released on 19 November 2012.

If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damask, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground:
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
