Play Funeral 5 times and see what you think. I was underwhelmed at first, but boy do the songs grow and lodge in your head. I'm with David Bowie on this one: one of the very best bands out there right now.

I'll accept that challenge and reciprocate in kind: Play Elbows "Leaders of the Free World" 5 times in a row and tell me which of the two works are better...Arcade Fire or Elbow.

Listen closely, and try not to let the occasional "Perry Farrell sound" of Arcade Fire Funeral influence you, if that sort of Jane's Addiction/Porno for Pyro's thing does it for you.

No, it was done for me by orthodox medicine, once diagnosed as infiltrated with a deranged embryo with a rubics cube genetic code: Embryonal cell carcinoma...a pregnant male (if that ain't inspiratin for a poem by So LackofClass, I don't know what is...).

It's like a bad Woody Allen film from 1969, but remains the number one cancer killer of males between the age of 20-34 years. Lance Armstrong popularized it, but I had it first, so he probably copied me.

Post mortem, the tumours have elements of teeth, cartilage, hair, bone, and skin...like a baby in a blender. Not good for a guy. But I remain in remission, and that part is good.

The best part is that the tumour marker is beta-HCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin), the same hormone that elevates when a woman is pregnant. The EPT/First Response Pregnancy tests detect beta HCG. Imagine the surprise on the Suzy Creamcheese lab tech when I go in for my quarterly check-up and tumour markers...receiving a prescription for a pregnancy test on a male...

...and a very virile male at that!

Was it a real or malicious insult on George's character in the context, or just a relatively harmless send up? I read a big interview with them in Q once that helped convince me they were fairly genuine underneath any of the bluff and bluster and hype. At least to me they have always seemed accountable for what they say and have not just distorted things.

Give it up, Blue. Have you not learned by now that only Boo knows when a symbol is a marketing ploy, when a statement is a slur, and when an insult is meant as a joke? Railing against manipulative marketing one minute, declaring that no one is influenced by marketing the next-- he can do this because he has the insight we all lack, you see. Thank God he has instructed me when and where I should show my tits, is all I can say. Whether or not he has the insight to enjoy one of the very best contemporary bands on earth, well, that's another question (one whose answer couldn't psosibly mean less to me, incidentally).

(10/13/97) - Forget the supposed Oasis-vs.-Blur feud...the real battle is being waged between Oasis and their role models, the Beatles themselves. Last week Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher publicly called ex-Beatle George Harrison a "nipple" (a British slang term for "idiot") after Harrison commented that Oasis would be forgotten in 30 years' time. Only days later, in an interview for MTV Live, Liam's brother Noel dissed Harrison's former bandmate Paul McCartney. When--in light of McCartney's recent remarks that Oasis were "derivative"--Noel was asked if there was any conflict between Oasis and McCartney, he replied, "I don't know, I think he's just going senile, isn't he?" No one in the Beatles' camp has yet to retaliate with his own barb.

The point is, who cares what these boys say about their on-again-off-again musical heroes and villains? Noel Gallagher's opinion of George Harrison? I'd as soon care about Chumbawumba's opinion of Bob Dylan.

When the guys from Arcade Fire get another decade or so under their respective belts, then I *may* care what they have to say about other musicians (or I may not, e.g., I love Morrissey but he says some patently dumb things about other musicians). For now, being fucking brilliant at what they do is plenty.

Self-prohibition, with occasional release, and the builder confirmed he'll take the last payment (for a gutted and refitted bathroom) for cash, saving some Â£800, so I ain't complaining. It's quite nice being incredibly restricted, means you appreciate things a whole lot more. Like being a teen again. I'm getting great mileage from the utterly loveable Regina Spektor, my only purchase so far this year.

Can it still be my LP of the year if I don't even buy it?

Hopefully they'll be better quality than the downloads that were free with the Of Montreal vinyl. I'm in the same boat with the Arcade Fire, and the bible-style packaging of the limited edition CD is becoming more and more tempting now that this delay is in place.
Finally got the Sundazed pressing of 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot' today. Will see what the fuss is about later. Always thought the CD sounded fine, but I'm a constant sucker for these things.

I haven't heard anything prior to the latest record, which is thoroughly enjoyable. It has an electronic style, with a clear pop sensibility although it's still suitably angular so as to be a challenging listen.
Apparently he introduced a new member of the band at a recent show.

MG, you absolutely must go see Of Montreal next weekend. They are one of the best live bands I've ever seen! And I'm very hard to please when it comes to live music.
