Pete Thomas - session work/interview

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Fito Paez is a legendary argentine singer and very famous in south america. Pete collaborated on his new album which has been released on radio. There was also a show. I didn't know Pete went to Argentina, nor how on earth he communicated with Fito Paez (both in the sence of getting to know him [which is a marvel in itself] and speaking spanish with him). This comes as quite shocking news. Bizarre.

He said every man's conscience is vile and depraved,
You cannot depend on it to be your guide
When it's you who must keep it satisfied

"a drum, a subject of gossip and With the Beatles?" Google Trans. strikes again.

I would translate it a little differently:

Pete Thomas, drummer for EC: "When I was nine years old, someone gave me "With the Beatles" as a gift, and my grandmother bought me a beat up drum and an old cymbal. That's all you needed then. And really that's all you need, even today: a beat up drum, an old cymbal and With the Beatles. Have things changed all that much since then?

Otis, I was previewing my translation when you posted. Cheers.

Gibbard, Costello Pals Step Out With Army Navy

Long before Benjamin Gibbard hopped in the Death Cab and established the Postal Service, the tuneful young man played in a little-known Pacific Northwest act called Pinwheel. Gibbard's partner-in-rock at the time was one Justin Kennedy, and the two split vocal duties. Flash forward to 2007, and Kennedy has relocated to Los Angeles and returned with a new act, Army Navy, on the brink of releasing their debut full length.

While Army Navy have yet to recruit a label or settle on a title or release date, their first bow is already in the can (and its tracklist can be found below). Having manned the producer's chair on the The Little Album That Could, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's web-storming self-titled debut, board-man Adam Lasus lends his touch to this first album as well.

What's more, joining Kennedy and fellow troopers Louie Schultz (lead guitar, keys) and Ben Gaffin (bass) on the Army Navy debut is none other than drummer Pete Thomas, of Elvis Costello's Attractions.

LAist Interview: Pete Thomas of Jackshit

Pete Thomas, a drummer since he was a kid in Sheffield, England, joined Elvis Costello to form the Attractions and continues as the drummer for the Imposters. He has also played as a session musician with countless artists including Johnny Cash, Sheryl Crow, Neil Finn, John Wesley Harding, Joe Jackson, Los Lobos, Joan Osbourne, Pearl Jam, Bonnie Raitt, Squeeze, Richard Thompson, Rufus Wainwright, and the Waterboys. In 2003, Thomas was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Along with Davey Faragher of the Imposters and Val McCallum of Jackson Browne's band, they create country rock magic with their band Jackshit. You can catch "Beau" "Shorty" and "Piece O" Shit this month at The Baked Potato on August 8 and 22 and next month at McCabe's on Sept 8. I asked Pete about his childhood in England, playing with Elvis, and California cowboy culture.

How old were you when you started playing music? When did you get your first set of drums? What drew you to the instrument?

I was 9, my grandmother bought me a snare-drum and cymbal. I made the rest of the kit out of old oil drums and biscuit tins. The inspiration was seeing the Beatles on TV, watching Ringo it seemed like a good job.

So many musicians credit Elvis Costello and the Attractions as the band that inspired them to go into music. What drummer influenced you?

My favourite drummers were:- Ringo, Charlie Watts and Mitch Mitchell

How did you meet Elvis Costello? How did you join the Attractions?

In 1977 I was living in Topanga Canyon, California. Elvis' manager, Jake Riviera, came to LA with the Damned. He played me EC's demos. It seemed like a good time to be in England so I went back and auditioned for EC with the other two Attractions who had answered ads in the Melody Maker. It seemed like we formed in a day.

What is the most memorable place that you have toured with Elvis?

There is a small seaside town in Sweden called Hunnebustrand (check spelling). We had a lot of fun there and decided it was the "best place in the world".

You kicked off the Elvis Costello and the Imposters tour on May 2 here in LA at the House of Blues. The energy in the audience was palpable. The playlist included songs from My Aim is True, Armed Forces, Imperial Bedroom, and Trust. How did it feel to focus on the material from the 70's and 80's?

The material EC chose seemed to involve a lot of quirky drum parts like "Lover's Walk" and "Strict Time". I really enjoyed myself.

What brought you back to California? Why did you choose to live in Los Angeles?

In the late nineties I seemed to be coming to LA a lot to do sessions and after doing a record with Vonda Sheperd, the singer on Ally McBeal, she offered me a job playing on the show's soundtrack for 3 years.

Your country rock band Jackshit was named "Best Bar Band" by Los Angeles Magazine. When did you form the band with Val McCallum and Davey Faragher? How did the concept and characters come about?

Following on from the previous question, the best thing about the Ally McBeal band was that two of the other guys, Val & Davey, seemed to share a good sense of humour and a love of rocking. psychedelic country/soul music. The name was suggested by a keyboard player called Mark Hart who was briefly in the band.

What intrigues you about California and cowboy culture?

The whole Laurel Canyon country rock scene of the late 60's and early 70's always seemed very attractive and I loved how in the old Gene Autry films they are chasing trucks on horseback and riding into recording studios wearing fantastic shirts.

What is your favorite music venue in LA?

The Baked Potato

Jackshit often features guest performers. When you play at The Baked Potato August 8 and 22nd and at McCabe's September 8, should the audience expect some surprises?

Yes, there will be a surprise. A tribute to one of the darker LA bands of the 70's.

Where do you buy your cowboy clothes?

Kings on Ventura in Studio City

Where do cowboys eat in LA?

Allegria on Sunset and Maltman

What are you listening to now?

Top Secret I'm afraid. It has to do with our surprise!

Jackshit at
- The Baked Potato on Wednesday, August 8 and 22 at 9:30pm
- McCabe's on September 8 at 8pm

What's Fito Páez saying about Pete Thomas and Elvis?

http://lamandinga5.blogspot.com/2008/09 ... l-mar.html

domingo 28 de septiembre de 2008

(extract)

¡mala gente!".

ARMY NAVY

(THE FEVER ZONE) ***

Los Angeles-by-way-of-Seattle quartet Army Navy got a boost when its song "Silvery Sleds" was included on the soundtrack of "Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist." "Silvery Sleds" isn't included here, but the 11 originals that are establish the group as solid newcomers, combining power-pop exuberance with more shadowy alt-rock strains.

Let's Active comes to mind, mainly because singer Justin Kennedy's nasal, youthful voice resembles Mitch Easter's. The presence of drummer Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello) on a few tracks boosts the power part of the pop equation. A closing cover of disco-era puffball "Right Back Where We Started From" puts a cap on one of 2008's most pleasant surprises.

Seriously, her last album was very very good. I'm intrigued to see what Rubin can add (not to mention Pete).

Jason Karaban Readies Mayfly EP

On the heels of his sophomore disc Sobriety Kills, Los Angeles indie alt/pop artist Jason Karaban releases a three song EP titled Mayfly on April 7 on Ascend Records. The disc is available online. On April 10, Karaban will perform at the Hotel Café songs from Mayfly and preview new tracks with his new band featuring members of Counting Crows, Elvis Costello's Imposters and vocalist Lucy Schwartz.

On the self-produced disc written with images of the Civil War in mind, Karaban is accompanied by Chris Joyner ("No Casualties") on piano and Lucy Schwartz backing vocals ("Sullivan Ballou" and "No Casualties") before going solo on the closer "A Far Better Place."

A reluctant solo artist, Jason Karaban first began his career fronting the Philadelphia indie rock bands Dragstrip Courage in 1997, and later Grand in 2000. The latter recorded a disc for Maverick Records, but was not ultimately released by Maverick. Instead, it was released by Ascend Records, a NY independent record label which is currently the home for Karaban's recordings. In 2002, the band broke up and Karaban moved from Philadelphia to Los Angeles.

Surrounding himself with a diverse and well-respected talent, Karaban emerged as a solo artist with the release of Doomed to Make Choices, in 2006, co-produced with Mike Napolitano (Joseph Arthur, The Twilight Singers). His subsequent releases Leftovers, and 2009's Sobriety Kills feature many notable guests musicians including Dave Pirner (Soul Asylum), David Immerglück (Counting Crows), Ani Difranco, Ivan Neville (Rolling Stones, Neville Brothers), Neil Larsen (Leonard Cohen, George Harrison), Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello), Glen Phillips (Toad The Wet Sprocket) and up-and-coming artists like Priscilla Ahn and Lucy Schwartz. Sobriety was co-produced with Barrie Maguire (Amos Lee, The Wallflower, Natalie Merchant) and Shane Smith.

Currently, Karaban is in the studio with producer Ethan Allen working on new tracks along with friends/collaborators David Immerglück and Charlie Gillingham of the Counting Crows, Pete Thomas and Davey Farragher of Elvis Costello's Imposters and Lucy Schwartz on backing vocals. Jason will be joined by his new band to preview songs and celebrate the release of Mayfly on Friday, April 10.

Brian Ray on Playing with Paul McCartney, Jimmy Page, Etta James and His Upcoming Album

October 14, 2009 by Aaron Kupferberg

(extract)

Q: You’re planning a follow up to Mondo Magneto, can you tell us about that?

A: BR: It’s such a wonderful process: getting together with musicians I really respect and adore, who happen to be my best friends. Guys like Abe Laboriel Jr., Matt Laug, Paul Bushnell, and all these great players. Now, on this new record, I assembled some of the same guys and added a few more like the drummer from Elvis Costello, Pete Thomas, along with Davey Faragher [also from Elvis Costello's band], and a great keyboard player named Adam MacDougall [The Black Crowes]. We got together, much like the first album, and worked on arrangements together as a four piece, getting a lot of interplay between musicians because I have a feeling that’s what is missing in a lot of pop now: a lot of these pop songs we hear are constructed by one guy with a few guest players. It doesn’t have that wonderful exchange that we know and love from all the records that influenced us. So that’s the deal. We’re in the studio at the same time, laughing, and scratching, and coming up with arrangements, and grabbing our performances as a unit.

011Q: What will be the album title?

A: BR: This Way Up. I’m looking forward to a January or February release. I’m 60% done with it right now and I’m lovin’ it. There’s more up-tempo numbers than the last record, if that matters. And lots of fun and colors.

Marc Lavoine - News - New video, Reviens Mon Amour

November 2, 2009 by Willis

After having started the promotion of his new album Volume 10 with the efficient “La Semaine Prochaine”, Marc Lavoine continues with “Reviens Mon Amour”, a darker song : watch the video !

Following the success of his 2 latest albums, the self-titled in 2001 & L’Heure D’Eté in 2005, including the hits “J’Ai Tout Oublié” (N°1), “Je Ne Veux Qu’Elle” (N°9) & “Toi Mon Amour” (N°8). His 2 compilations Les Duos De Marc & Les Solos De Marc, 2 years ago, have been nicely welcomed too. Marc Lavoine is back with his new album Volume 10. The album entered N°1 in France in September, including the singles “La Semaine Prochaine” & the follow-up “Reviens Mon Amour”, which video has been shot.

The song is darker than the previous one, from his new album. The singer has been helped by the chic Bertrand Burgalat (Christophe Willem) & also Lulu Gainsbourg, Serge’s son, who composed “Quand Je Suis Seul”, his friend Fabrice Aboulker (”Les 1001 Vies D’Ali Baba”) & Christophe Casanave (Najoua Belyzel)… The album includes 2 duets, Marc Lavoine loves them : the first with Valérie Lemercier, “La Grande Amour” & the second with his 11-year-old daughter Yasmine, “Lentement”. Recorded in Paris & Los Angeles, this album includes the rhythm section by Elvis Costello’s Imposters, bassist Davey Faragher & drummer Pete Thomas.

Also, Marc Lavoine will perform from January 19 to 31, 2010 at Paris’ Casino & on tour in France.

LA-based Jason Karaban Releases New Single,
by Staff | 11.17.2009

With three critically acclaimed records over the past three years and boasting an impressive line-up of contributing artists - including Ani DiFranco, Glen Phillips, Dave Pirner and Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello), Jason Karaban reveals a new single, "Succeed 101," out today on New Model Music.

Described by Karaban as "a 3 1/2 minute manic episode that covers extreme lows, apathy, soaring highs and a Tony Robbins sort of mantra thrown in for good measure," the latest track from the LA-based singer/songwriter is a promising preview of Karaban's upcoming EP Just Enough, Just In Case, offering offbeat instrumentation courtesy of brass instruments, handclaps and foot stomps.

A little about the song...

It is a fun rocker featuring Pete Thomas and Davey Faragher [Elvis Costello] on drums and bass, Adam MacDougal [Black Crows] on crazy Keys, Scott Shriner [Weezer] on background vocals and me on about 40 guitars...

That's right.. 40 guitars.. you'll see, I went totally MAD in the middle section. It was tracked and mixed by Joe Zook [Pink, One Republic, Weezer] and I hope you dig it.

From a quiz -

http://www.stuff.co.nz/southland-times/ ... z-solution

Which leading Kiwi songwriter recorded an album in LA, with two Attractions?

A: Dave Dobbyn. (He recorded Lament For the Numb in 1993 with Bruce and Pete Thomas, of Elvis Costello and the Attractions, who played under the name the Stone People.)

Pete lists another Dobbyn album , Twist , on his site; he doesn't mention Lament etc. -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lament_For_The_Numb

"Lament For The Numb" is a 1993 album by New Zealand singer-songwriter Dave Dobbyn and a one-off group known as The Stone People. The Stone People consisted of Dobbyn himself on the guitar, piano and as the lead vocalist, album producer Mitchell Froom on the keyboard, Bruce Thomas on the bass guitar and Pete Thomas on the drums and as the percussionist. The album was recorded and mixed by Tchad Blake at the Sunset Sound Factory in Hollywood.

," featuring contributions from many notable artists, including: Ani Difranco, Dave Pirner (Soul Asylum), Jeff Klein, Ivan Neville (Keith Richards, the Neville Brothers), Pete Thomas(Elvis Costello) and David Immerglück (Counting Crows). The album is produced by Mike Napolitano and Karaban and was recorded in New Orleans, New York, Los Angeles and Minneapolis.

This first solo endeavor and the collaboration with the diverse group of artists was recorded over a period of six months and upon completion the CD immediately received airplay on two ground breaking radio stations: KCRW (Los Angeles) and WXPN (Philadelphia).

“Doomed to Make Choices,” by Jason Karaban is due out in June

Pete usually turns up as the drummer if I'm ever asked to make my fantasy rock'n'roll supergroup (I invariably give out the lineup of the Imposters before I realise what I'm doing and stop).
