Must-see unseen acts

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Must-see unseen acts

Post by Otis Westinghouse »

Who do you most want to see of people who, in theory, can still be seen but have never had the pleasure?

My list would be something like:

Tom Waits
Bjork
Neil Young
Radiohead
Edwyn Collins (one day, maybe...)

Can't think of any others. Sufjan Stevens is taken care of, in some style. If I'd made the effort, I could have seen most of them, though not TW without some fairly massive effort, or at least wad of cash. I guess that will stay the same. I wouldn't mind seeing dinosaurs like Rolling Stones and The Who, but am not that fussed. U2, I guess, up to a point.

Saw The Who and The Stones in the 70s.
I'm that old.
It's mainly American artistes who don't visit these shores that often and when they do it's a midweek slot in London - no chance of coming to East Anglia!!!
So...
Neil Young (I agree - definitely top of my not yet seen live list)
Wilco
Ryan Adams
Eels
White Stripes
Can't you see I'm trying to change this water to wine

Do they (i.e. Tony Sadley and one or two other non-Kemps) still play under that name? Didn't know you were a fan!

My instinction would be that Jackson is pulling a limb...

There aren't many band that I want to see. I do want to see Arctic Monkeys and Bob Dylan keeps touring when I'm not around. Who is leaking my work/holiday commitments to him?

I've been lucky enough to see most of those in my personal Pantheon - Waits, EC, Dylan, Bowie. Joni Mitchell is one I've never had the pleasure to see perform, but she's virtually retired now and her voice isn't what it once was. Alas, I'll never see XTC, due to Andy Partridge's stage fright.

There are a number of more modern acts I am itching to see, such as Radiohead, Nick Cave, Richard Hawley and Neko Case.

My Top 15:

Waterson-Carthy (wouldn't mind Swarb guesting either)
Mose Allison
John Wesley Harding
John Prine
Frank Black solo (especially now that he's supporting...)
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
Propagandhi
Daniel Johnston
Leonard Cohen
Randy Newman
Rufus Wainwright
Little Jimmy Scott
Down By Law
Linda Thompson
Greg Brown

Never give up, I never dreamt I'd see my beloved Green in action and then he hit 50 and said 'what's the worst that can happen?' and now I've seen him! Maybe Andy will take a cue. Agree, though, it hardly seems likely. Joni is a good suggestion, but also not too likely.

I've been thinking about this but haven't posted yet because my list is very similar to Otis's, and that makes me feel unoriginal. :x Damn you!

I've already seen Neil Young and would *love* to see him again. Ditto Dylan, U2, Springsteen, Bowie, Moz. I'd love to see...

Bjork
Radiohead
Kate Bush (another unlikely!)
Rolling Stones
Lloyd Cole
Arcade Fire
Elbow
Willie Nelson (missed some great opportunities for him lately but I was just too broke and too preoccupied with life)

I know I'm forgetting some...

Kate Bush, now there's a thought! eBay would probably melt. Elbow a must see event. And Lloyd. Arcade Fire would be great too. I loved the fact that U2 came on every night of their last tour to Wake Up. Edge said after that he can't now hear that song without getting mad knowts of nervous excitement in his stomach. I guess itmust be incredible to see them play it. I have a recording off the telly that makes the hairs stand up on your neck.

The Pretenders played the other day at the Cornbury festival, the same event where I saw EC last summer. It must have been their first gig in some time. Maybe a tour beckons?

pophead: I saw The Pretenders open for Neil Young a few summers ago. Imagine that!

Seriously though, considering my young age I've been remarkably lucky with who I've had a chance to see... and after seeing Ray Davies a few months ago and with Randy Newman coming up in October there aren't really many living artists left that I have to see. But there's a few.

In order of must-seeness:

The "I will cry if I never get the chance" award goes to Tom Waits. He's really the only one left who I'd feel a giant void in my life if I never got to see live.

Following that:

Leonard Cohen (I saw him perform a few songs with Sexsmith at a recent Toronto appearance, which was magical, but I'd love to see a full show)

Al Green

Aimee Mann

Van Morrison (I've had two chances now, but I'm always worried about being disappointed)

Gillian Welch & David Rawlings
This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.

Can't believe I didn't list the last two. That's a real must. I have to see Time (the Revelator) before I die.

Suzanne Vega
Prince
The Pretenders
Terence Trent D'Arby (aka Sananda Maityera)
Tom Waits (goes without saying).

I would like to see George Harrison and John Lennon, but I'm going to have to wait a while (hopefully!).

Most definitely The Pretenders and Gillian Welch and David Rawlings and after last night's viewing of the 2011 Kennedy Center Honors- Sonny Rollins- hard to believe I have never caught him live. And he only lives up the road in Germantown in Columbia County.

Hah! Well at least 5.5 years down the road I can strike 3 and 4 from that list, and gosh were they worth it. I think Radiohead playing all of In Rainbows was one of the best things I've seen, and Neil was awesome too. Could have seen Edwyn, it's nice to report, but just didn't make it. Waits and Björk are the ones. Would like to see Gillian W too. And of course Kate Bush.

Just got tickets to my first time seeing Ryan Adams in January. That's one I'll be able to check off my list.
