A 13-year-old who puts everyone else on that new Ella tribute CD to shame.

I can't get past 90 seconds of that. To me it's distasteful and disturbing. Am I alone?

Definite raw material that needs sculpting. But at this point, scat novelty.

Is it just me, or is the idea of a tribute album to a singer just daft? Ella's own recordings are readily available in hi fidelity, so why would anyone want to buy a facsimile thereof?

(mind you, that petite chanteuse is teriffic)

I saw this kid at the Montreal Jazz Fest last year, as opening act for the Neville Brothers, and she really was superb. Granted, it is a little odd to see a 12-year-old belt out Signed, Sealed, Delivered or At Last. She had such a natural command of the stage though - the biggest stage of the fest, no less, with something close to 100,000 watching.
Apparently she has an album coming out this Sept. on Verve/ Universal. I just hope she's got sensible parents...

The White Stripes are currently in the midst of an extensive tour of Canada. So extensive, that they're playing rarely visited spots like Yellowknife and Whitehorse.

To add a further twist, Jack & Meg have been showing up earlier in the day at random local spots in each city to play secret shows. Yesterday here in Toronto they played at a local YMCA where they played to mostly summer camp kids.

YouTube has a few of the other surprise shows.

Here they are on a bus in Winnipeg:

A youth shelter in Burnaby, British Columbia:

My personal favourite has to be the bowling alley in Saskatoon:

Very good rendition of "Heroes" frm Berlin in 2002. Very poignant that it was recorded there. He looks and sounds great here, snd the recording is top notch (I wonder was it televised).

Can't figure out what the backing vocalist is there for, except maybe for trying to beat Bjork in the "strangest outfit ever worn on stage" contest.

And pointless wailing. she supports him a lot, including when I saw him. Pretty pointless, though he's a big fan.

It's great that you can hear (and see) brilliant songs you don't have in the house but are dying to hear again via YouTube. This time, Kevin Rowland doing Young Man>

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDYPNBQDn2M

I fell in love with this song on hearing it over the credits at the end of an excellent Dexy's docu, with a repentant Kevin regretting his youthful arrogance, saying that he had to pay a terrible price for being the man he was in Dexy's. The CD is very hard to come by, I recall we discussed here once, so it's great to hear it again. I love his voice on this. Great interview with him + Proclaimers recently. I never knew he was more or less to thank for their discovery and first record deal. They revere him. It was very touching.

Win and Regine from Arcade Fire performing Keep The Car Running with Bruce Springsteen.
Not a great quality, but worth watching nonetheless.
