The EC FARTYs 2005

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

I don’t really feel qualified to comment, but I rarely let that stop me.

Albums of the Year (or, Albums by guys whose first name starts with J)

John Prine – Fair & Square
John Hiatt – Master of Disaster
Jack Johnson – In Between Dreams
I’d put the Bright Eyes acoustic record here, but I hate the way it begins. And it doesn’t fit my pattern.

Songs of the Year
John Prine – Clay Pigeons (not his, I know, but I explained this already)
John Hiatt – Howlin’ Down the Cumberland
Bright Eyes (Worst. Name. Ever) – Another Travellin’ Song
Jack Johnson - Constellations

Live Concert of the Year - Elvis, Lucinda, Jack Johnson, John Prine or the Kings of Leon? I don’t have as many as some (like VG) to choose from. This is the sticks, after all. Elvis at the Tennessee Theatre, because the company was so good.

Band of the Year - Kings of Leon

Solo Artist of the Year – John Prine, because damn, it was good to be there.

Songwriter of the Year – Swung/Beanz. The Meatball Song is a classic waiting for the right producer.

Movie of the Year - I’m going with DVD of the year on this, since I haven’t seen many movies. Napoleon Dynamite. Sweet!

TV Show of the Year – er. I know, I know, they’ve recycled the same stories three times now. But one word: Kovac.

Sporting Moment of the Year – Lance Armstrong’s 7th.

Hero of the Year – So Lacklustre

Wanker of the Year – me. I gotta grow some cajones.

Sandwich of the Year – the post-thanksgiving turkey on white with lettuce, mayo and cranberry sauce. No coleslaw on or beside.

Drink of the Year – water, with just a little unsweetened cranberry juice concentrate. And beer. Southpaw: cheap, yet drinkable. It doesn’t matter after the first one or two, anyway.

Thread of the Year – I’m Off to Work!!! G2S’s green shining nipular emerald, OS’s bowel habits, MBA’s new do, my poor Socks’ plumbing problems, whar’s worst sexual moment - it was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

E C Fans Poster of the Year – El Vez. (sucking up to the Prime Prine Poster is my final initiation rite into the Double Naught Prine Patrol). And he’s very, very funny to boot. 2nd up would be MBA, for almost nominating me!

Elvis Costello Highlight of the Year – Him singing Knoxville Girl, in Knoxville, of all places. And his “we’ve always wanted to play here” comment after the show.

Elvis Costello Song That Sums Up Your Year – Battered Old Bird
Like me, the "g" is silent.

50 Foot Wave - Golden Ocean
Death Cab For Cutie - Plans
Michael Penn - Mr. Hollywood Jr, 1947
Tim Fite - Gone Ain't Gone
Johhny Cash - Legend

Songs of the Year:

Sufjan Stevens - "John Wayne Gacy"
Tim Fite - "No Good Here"
Michael Penn - "Walter Reed"

Live Concert of the Year--Hosty Duo at the Wreck Room, Ft. Worth

Band of the Year--Wilco

Solo Artist of the Year--Sufjan Stevens

Songwriter of the Year--Sufjan Stevens

Movie of the Year--Walk the Line

TV Show(s) of the Year:

Arrested Development
The Office (not as great as the UK version but still really funny)

Sporting Moment of the Year--I couldn't care less.

Hero of the Year--Kinky Friedman

Wanker of the Year--Michael Brown

Sandwich of the Year--The one I made from Thanksgiving leftovers with turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce and a little bit of sweet potato on 9-grain wheat bread. Mmmmmmmmmm.

Drink of the Year--Sazerac, which I discovered in July in New Orleans and am planning to drink again there this summer.

Thread of the Year--The Rita thread

E C Fans Poster of the Year--El Vez. Makes me laugh every time.

Elvis Costello Highlight of the Year--The news about the record with Allen Tousaint

Albums of the Year
Leaders of the Free World - Elbow
Funeral - Arcade Fire (Feb '05 here, maaan)
The Magic Numbers -The Magic Numbers
You Could Have It So Much Better - Franz Ferdinand
Want Two - Rufus (or if you prefer, the new Want, which is 1 + 2 as one item)

Songs of the Year
Great Expectations - Elbow (by several miles)
Leaders of the Free World - Elbow
Almost Forgot Myself - Doves
Jesusland - Ben Folds
Chinito Chinito - Ry Cooder
(though I'm tempted to make it 5 by Elbow)

Live Concert of the Year
Very hard! What a year - The Fall, Rufus and Martha, EC x 3, Josh Rouse, Dylan, Franz F. Dylan was an incredible experience, but the prize for sheer musical magnificence and all round pleasure has to be Elbow at the Brixton Academy, cos there's nothing better than seeing a great band at the top of their game

Band of the Year
Elbow

Solo Artist of the Year
Bob Dylan - I've discovered so much, and have so much more to explore

Songwriter of the Year
Guy Garvey/Elbow

Movie of the Year
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or The Curse of the Wererabbit (did I get to the cinema once in the evening this year? I suspect not)

TV Show of the Year
Shared: Attenborough's utterly stunning Life in the Undergrowth and the superb Bleak House - both examples of their genres at their best

Sporting Moment of the Year
Man Utd's moral victory over Arsenal in the FA Cup

Hero of the Year
George Best, thanks for the memories and inspiration, sorry about the liver

Wanker of the Year
Whichever individual or group that 'inspired' four seemingly regular Leeds/Bradford Muslim lads to blow up their fellow citizens on July 7

Sandwich of the Year
This and every year: BLAT. That's BLT (bacon, lettuce and tomato, with the bacon just cooked) + avocado, and lots of mayo and dijon mustard. On a good grainy bread.

Drink of the Year
Palo Cortado from Waitrose (dry but full-flavoured sherry, darkish colour) - kept overdoing it at lunchtime. The sort of drink you can have for breakfast, elevenses, lunch, aftenoon tipple, pre-dinner, dinner, dessert, digestif. I did most of those.

Thread of the Year
What Are You Listening To Right Now?

E C Fans Poster of the Year
Selfmademug a) for making it to London, b) for grace under pressure, c) for having great taste (see how much I've copied her choices! The Sufjan Gacy song is great, but we're the Great Expectations splinter group), d) for being consistently worth reading through her intelligence and verbal skills. Special mention too to Mike Boom. And special thanks to the Spookies and Blue for being great. And to my mum and dad. I love you all, honest!

Elvis Costello Highlight of the Year
Hammersmith was great for the meet up, the drunkenness and the excitement of seeing him again, Leicester for the low-keyness and therefore being right at the front with space around with VG and taper-chum, but the top award has to be Cornbury: my first open air Elvis, with my three boys dancing away and loving it, plus me missus seeing him for the first time, on a beautiful summer evening in a perfect bucolic setting with on-site camping and a good bottle of Spanish red to follow.

Albums of the Year
You Could Have It So Much Better - Franz Ferdinand
Funeral - Arcade Fire (which came out last year but was THE ALBUM for me this year)
Let it Die - Feist (this is sort of an honorable mention for personal reasons)
The Woods - Sleater Kinney
Extraordinary Machine - Fiona Apple

Songs of the Year
Leisure Suite - Feist
Elenor, Put Your Boots On - Franz Ferdinand
My Life is in Storage - Frank Black
Whetstones - Deb Talan (another lovely personal one for me)

Live Concert of the Year
I think Feist might have been the only one I went to. Can that be right?!?

Band of the Year -
I saw Franz Ferdinand and Arcade Fire EVERYWHERE.

Solo Artist of the Year -
Agree with 'Mug about Bob Dylan, also everywhere.

Songwriter of the Year -
I am torn...

Movie of the Year -
I thought Shopgirl was sort of lovely, though there must have been others that were better than I am neglecting.

TV Show of the Year -
Arrested Development, RIP, and Lost.

Sporting Moment of the Year -
If I cared I would pick...

Hero of the Year -
this is weird but I was most inspried by Nate Birkus, who is the designer on the Oprah Winfrey show and survived the tsunami in December but lost his partner. He was just very moving and touching through his loss.

Wanker of the Year -
Ick, George Bush. And also the FEMA shithead Michael Brown.

Sandwich of the Year -
Chicken parm subs. Which I have never had...don't ask.

Drink of the Year -
Margaritas, as usual.

Thread of the Year -
I like the jokes. Many of which I borrowed to text message to my boy.

E C Fans Poster of the Year
My girl Mug. Always brave!

Elvis Costello Highlight of the Year
Al, was that Elvis concert this year?? Or last year?

Elvis Costello Song That Sums Up Your Year
My Little Blue Window.

I am adding a question - personal motto of the year.
Mine is 'YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN!'
And I was happy to be alive, in a magic world.

Which one? I should really have included 2 Elvis shows in my best live moments of the year, cause seeing him in London with the guys from the board was an awesome experience, and hearing him play here in Boston with Emmylou was stunning.

PS, you know I am right there with ya on the YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. :D 8)

For those of you across the pond who don't know their Association Football, by "moral victory" Otis means "defeat".

And Michael Brown is a midfielder in Tottenham's reserves.....even as a Gooner he's not upset me that much....

It's embarrassing how little new music I even heard this year, so I'm just going to go with stuff I've been listening to (which will be embarrassing enough)

Album of the Year

David Newman/"Serenity" promotional CD (only 8 minutes long, but it got me through some lonely nights....)

X -- Los Angeles

Songs of the Year

"Holy Smoke"/Lee Dorsey
Elvis Costello -- Allen Toussaint/"On Your Way Down" (from the Madison Square Garden Katrina benefit)
Ballad of a Thin Man -- Bob Dylan(the "No Direction Home" live version)
Hit the Road, Jack -- Ray Charles (more records so pack so much punch in so little time)

Live Concert of the Year

Elvis C./Tift Merritt at the New Orleans HOB last Spring. Of course, it was I think the only concert I've seen this year, but all things considered, especially the compnay, it was very, very definitely the place to be.

Band of the Year

Jackshit (the band, I mean)

Solo Artist of the Year

Is any artist really, truly "solo"?

Songwriter of the Year

Cole Porter

Movie of the Year

Do I ever need to say?....Well, actually, I'm calling it a tie.

A History of Violence/Serenity (avaialble on DVD in a matter of hours!!!)

(Note: There are still several important movies I haven't seen, so perhaps I should reserve this spot for "Capote", "The Constant Gardener", "Harry Potter" or "Brokeback Mountain" -- my heroes have always been cowboys, regardless or race, creed or sexual orientation, dangnabit.)

TV Show of the Year

"Deadwood" (season I on DVD)

Honorable mention: "Veronica Mars" and, to a slightly lesser extent, "Battlestar Gallatica"

Sporting Moment of the Year

The day I went to the gym and did NOT see Fox News on any of the monitors.

Wanker of the Year

Bill O'Reilly, and every single bonehead who ever uttered the words "war on Christmas" without irony or sarcasm. Is there a more epic sized wank in human history than this? Is there? Wanking is not evil, after all, it's merely useless.

Hero of the Year

Jon Stewart

"If Bill O'Reilly needs to have an enemy, needs to feel persecuted, you know what? Here's my Kwanzaa gift to him. Are you ready? All right. I'm your enemy. Make me your enemy. I, Jon Stewart, hate Christmas, Christians, Jews, morality, and I will not rest until every year families gather to spend December 25th together at Osama's homo-abortion-pot-and-commie-jizzporium."

In memorium, Will Eisner.

Honorable mention: Molly Ivins, Steven Colbert, Jimmy Carter, David Cronenberg

Sandwich of the Year

A tie -- SoCal French Dip Pastrami and Binh Ma (O.C. by way of Vietnam -- think subs made with baguettes and WAY different meats and vegetables)

Drink of the Year

"Dirty" Vodka Martinis, made by me.

Runner up -- Canada's own Bloody Ceasar

Thread of the Year

"Fun with Board Members" (because I never mentally progressed past age 10)

EC Fans Poster of the Year

Kissy Monster!

Elvis Costello Highlight of the Year

Everything New Orleans' related.
