Mississippi Burning

Post by BlueChair »

Glad to hear justice has finally been served, even if it's 41 years too late:

This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.

My father was born in 1952, in southern Mississippi, and remembers being afraid of white people because of what they could do to him and his family. I hate to say it, but I agree with him: justice delayed is justice denied. A guilty verdict--on MANSLAUGHTER!--won't bring those three men back. Still, it's a start, and an acknowledgment.

According to NPR the jury is currently split 50/50...the judge asked them to keep trying for a verdict.

Without really knowing anything about the details of the case the prosecutor had aganist Killen, it nevertheless makes me sad that this crime -- and thousands of others less well known because their were no white victims -- may just sort of linger. Cases like this are especially chilliing because the "crime" the victims were executed for was exercising their first amendment rights.

Way too little, way too late, and yet better than nothing. Now THAT is sad.

Sixty years for an 80-year-old man. I can't say that I'm not pleased:

Death in prison for someone who has eluded jail time for half of his life sounds good to me.

i would have preferred a little public bullwhipping prior to incarceration.
I'm not concerned about the very poor.
