I used to live out on 441, so I became convinced that Tom Petty wrote American Girl JUST for me, although I have to say that given the fact that we've never met and the other fact that 441 is a pretty long road it is unlikely that this is so. Nevertheless, it is so. :D

Heartening to read that Updike's lapidary honed prose did not spring 'full formed' from his head onto the page as demonstrated in the NY Times yesterday. The man was mortal and worked to put those beautiful sentences on paper each day.

As I age I appreciate more the mind of an intelligent woman so why does this one have to dance about verbally during a nomination hearing, particularly when she has previously written a sound article back in 1995 dismissing the whole sham of such nomination hearings?

I gave up drinking a couple of weeks ago and have vowed not to tocuh a drop of alcohol until Mini VG No 2 is born (less than three weeks now  )

I'm not actually missing it although the last hour and a half in the pub on Friday nights is difficult to endure - what with the quality conversations your mates are having.

It's even more entertaining giving them a lift home

This is not a Michael Jackson reference but is there a sweeter sight in the world than watching a 2 year old chase bubbles around the garden and hearing the laughter that comes with it?

No, probably not, but a close second for me is having your 23 year old oldest daughter say a sincere and unexpected thank you for all the things you have ever done for her.

Waiting around for a new baby to make an appearance is hard work.

Mind you, I could have been carrying it around for nine months (as I am reminded every day  )

Hunkered down for the day as the Clinton's have closed the roads off in the area and secured the air space, as well. What a circus. Beautiful weather for the celebration and all the best to the bride and groom.

It is an all day affair as far as I know well into the night as a substantial fireworks display is planned over the Hudson later this evening- you may well want to head east and see if you can catch the film in the Danbury area. I am just basking in the beautiful weather, planning on enjoying the "Electric Panels" art festival in Beacon today, enjoying having all three daughters under my roof for a change and hoisting a toast to the impending nuptials.

silk purse/sow's ear! I think somebody told me that once already when I turned 40. But it's ok. As I told my mother, I'm just shooting for "presentable" anymore.

Remember him running for Peruvian presidency and seeing him on Spanish Tv, but never read anything other than journalism. What do you recommend?

I like the García Márquez story at the end here:

Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriteris the name I know best:
