Random Thoughts

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

I just overheard my office's event planner on the phone asking about William Shatner's availability for February 10, 2009 :P

I'm sick to death of this place and ready to move on to something new... but that's pretty damn cool.

If we did that moody, then we'd have to replace the goblet of wine with those little capri sun juice bag thingys.

You'd be surprised by the quality of some of those newer wines sold in those tetra packs. There's still such a stigma against twist-off caps and wine in boxes, but some of them really aren't bad at all.

I have no problem with screw caps. Most of the box wine is pure crap.

True as that may be, it's mostly a stigma at this point. The bottle is little more than a delivery conduit, as most wines are not sold to be aged at this point anyway. I participated in a blind tasting of a type I wish I could remember the name of, and it surprised me. I do not consider myself a wine connoisseurby any means, but I can definitely spot a good wine when I taste one.

Needless to say, I continue to buy wines primarily in bottles but I would definitely try that one particular type of boxed wine again if the opportunity seized me.

I visited 9 Downing Street yesterday to watch a court case.

It felt quite cool walking through the security gates and then having people wonder if you are someone important

I also got to see the Prime Minister be driven away to an appointment.

I refrained from hurling abuse at him. The armed police might have had something to do with that

It's headed our way as well. I was so hoping we'd get through soccer season without me having to drive a vanload of wet smelly boys around.

Breaking news!! Game CXL'd. Yaaaaa hoooooooo.

And just because nobody asked, I'm mostly a beer drinker, but when I want wine I generally want something very cold and white, and boxes fit into my fridge better.

Stay dry, mood. It's a blustery day here! And school got out early, so I have a houseful of smelly boys - they're just dry and smelly as opposed to wet and smelly.

If I was the pope, I would get rid of that stupid pope mobile. Doesn't that take away from the message a little bit?

This one time, in Toronto, I threw water balloons at Blue's Prime Minister's limo caravan. Teenagers...

This one time, in Scotland, I climbed up on this fence to take pictures of Prince Charles.

I think I must've been drunk.

Recently exchanged silly comments with Bill Murray at the Union League Club Hotel In Chicago near the stock exchange. He was there for opening day, then a performance at a local club. Sweet as Vermont maple on a " a simple plan" blue-cold winter day. Less effusive but as genuine as when I met Tom Hanks and he held and palyed with my daughter when the premier of Sleepless in Seattle was released in Hollywood (15 years ago).

On a more sobering note, saw Richard Simmons in O'hare yesterday.

I was moved to tears, and while boarding and taking my middle seat in coach, I was sweatin' with the oldies...

Robert Vesco: Fugitive from US justice for 35 years

Wednesday, 7 May 2008

In a decade of antiheroes like the 1970s, Vesco achieved something approaching cult status. He might have been part of the damnation of Richard Nixon. But he was also widely seen as a Scarlet Pimpernel, the prototypical "fugitive financier" who was always one step ahead of his pursuers at the SEC, the FBI and the CIA. He looked the part too – tall, sleek and handsome, seemingly cocking a permanent snook at the US authorities as he dispensed interviews to network television and peered out from the photos on newspaper front pages, with his sideburns and glossy dark hair, his pencil moustache and trademark sunglasses. Rounding out the myth was his personal plane, the Silver Phyllis, a custom-fitted Boeing 707, equipped with its own discothèque and whirlpool bath.

School's out! Woo Hoo! Until August 1st anyway. My students finished exams today and had an early exit from school. Three more days of administrative duties and I'm gone daddy gone.

God, I'm right behind you. Jess is already done and home from college, Jordan and Rob have one more day of regular classes and then four days of finals next week, and Justin graduates from 8th grade on May 27. Then you can stick a fork in me 'cause I will be done for a while.

This fall I will be back to having THREE kids in high school again. All boys. Driving themselves. Someone buy me a drink.

I'm in the market for a new gas grill. Any recommendations? My old charcoal grill just kicked the bucket and I'm tired of the mess.
