Glenn Tilbrook

Small all standing venue, sign said licenced to hold 220 and it was sold out, but not too packed. Box room sandwiched by bar and stage. Good mix of solo and Squeeze tracks, a surprise Hendrix cover and plenty of good humour. Played 2 sets, about 50 mins followed by an hour. Crowd participation was encouraged and wasn't lacking. Well worth the £12, thanks for recommendation JM. And thanks to the chauffeur  .

Los Lobos, Friday night last, Feb 24. Kiko Set. Another incredible performance by a band that has been around as long as Elvis, seems to keep getting better, and they absolutely love what they are doing. Like kids on stage for the first time...every show.

The concert was fimed for DVD at HOB San Diego. Release in fall for Holiday sales. Label 'em anyway youlike, but these guys can do it all.

Elvis and David Hidalgo have a huge mutual admiration and respect. On Los Lobos "The Ride" Elvis sings "Matter of Time" from Los Lobos "How Will the Wolf Survive" lp. On the follow-up, entitled "Ride This", Los Lobos perform "Uncomplicated" from B and C.

Blue, I know you've been quite busy lately  but I'd love to read your report on Belle & Sebastian / New Pornographers show. Any good ?

SoLack - glad you enjoyed Glenn Tilbrook - was the Hendrix cover Voodoo Chile? He's been doing that one for a while. Great version too.

Is anybody going to the V Festival? The first wave of the line up was announced last night.

So far there's Morrissey and Radiohead (headliners for each day), Paul Weller, The Magic Numbers, Keane, Kasabian, Bloc Party and Fatboy Slim amongst others.

You can get the updates from http://www.vfestival.com. And before you ask Spooky, I don't work for Virgin

Another case of a terrific show at a shitty venue. The Docks is a HORRIBLE venue... hard to get to, and way too overpopulated. But the show was awesome... The New Pornographers didn't excite me very much, partially cause I don't really know there stuff but especially since Neko Case wasn't there. But Belle & Sebastian were great to see.. they played a good mix of old songs and new... highlights for me were "The Stars of Track and Field," "Women's Realm," "Fox In The Snow," "Like Dylan In The Movies," and "She's Losing It."

Two great headliners, and the wonderful Magics too. They're planning to release their second LP by Sept or so, so should bve airing a good few new classics by then. I have faith they can do an even more special second.

Saw Robyn Hitchcock and the Minus 5 at Slim's here in SF last night. Wow, what a great show! RH is an extremely charasmatic performer and was funny in between songs too. The Minus 5 were energetic and fantastic. Peter Buck played bass facing the drums for most of the show. Robyn and "the Minus 3" played together for a large part of the show near the end, doing a great psychedelic version of "Eight Miles High" and the Soft Boys' "I Wanna Destroy You." (both sounded better than the originals!) Encore featured all of them on stage, Peter Buck at the drums, Robyn minus his guitar, singing and flailing his arms around wildly.

Excellent show.

Saw Franz Ferdinand the other night...You know who gets a lot more excited at shows than New Yorkers? Besides everyone? Kids from Buenos Aires. With all the jumping and pushing and excitement, I was covered in sweat by the third song, most of it not my own. Incredible.

John Prine, last night. Have I mentioned that yet? Let me say a big public THANK YOU to oily slick who, somehow, some way, found out about the ticket presale before me and brought it to my attention. JP presales work like this: you buy and are promised tickets somewhere in the first 6 rows, which you cannot pick up until one hour before showtime. So, I had no idea where we were sitting, I was just hoping to get as close as possible. So, I pick up the tickets and read 'PT104' and thought, fuck, we're on P and that is NOT on the first 6 rows. Heads will roll! So, then, I go to the restroom and I'm slightly calmer and I peruse the ticket again. There's this part that says 'orchestra'. I begin to get excited. I tell my husband 'we're in the pit!' thinking ok, folding chairs four rows back. So, we get drinks and head for our seats. Onstage is this lady doing what I can only describe as a hillbilly poetry slam and she's pretty good, but it's not something I want to hear a lot of. We get the usher to show us where we are sitting, and excuse my french, but jesus christ we are sitting right in the veryfuckingfront row in the veryfuckingcenter. John Prine will be standing DIRECTLY in front of ME!!!!

OK, so most of you know that this is, no matter if JP comes out and does 3 solid hours of Porter Waggoner's greatest hits, going to be the highlight of my musical year. Decade. Quite possibly lifetime. And it was just fantastic. He enjoys himself so much, you'd have to be dead not to have a good time. This was mostly a "hits" show, not that he has any, but he played all Those Songs. He did Storm Windows, and looked directly at me singing 'don't let your baby down.' I also got the 'Marie!' part from Lake Marie, plus lots of others. Best was a groovy version of Ain't Hurtin' Nobody and a really rowdy Bear Creek. It was an evening of awesomeness. Absolute awesomeness.

Thanks, OS! I love you in a very platonic way!

Just ordered tix for Solomon Burke at Massey Hall on July 8. His first Toronto performance in 15 years. Gonna take my dad.

Between Randy Newman, Ray Davies, and Burke I'll be seeing a lot of people who haven't been to Toronto in ages over the next few months!

Went to see Ray Davies at Massey Hall shortly before leaving to L.A. with Red. An all around great show that mixed the well-known Kinks classics ("All Day And All The Night", "You Really Got Me", "Sunny Afternoon", and "Lola") with fan favorites ("Days", "Oklahoma USA", "Village Green", "Johnny Thunder"), not to mention a good sampling of songs from his new album Other People's Lives.

An all around great show, though Davies' age showed at times in his voice. Still, he's a great communicator with the audience and a pleasure to see live. Here's the full setlist:

1. I'm Not Like Everybody Else
2. Where Have All The Good Times Gone
3. Til The End Of The Day
4. After The Fall
5. 20th Century Man

Acoustic set:

6. Oklahoma USA (Dedicated to Rosie)
7. Village Green
8. Picture Book
9. Johnny Thunder
10. Sunny Afternoon

11. Dead End Street
12. Next Door Neighbor
13. Creatures Of Little Faith
14. Over My Head
15. The Tourist
16. Low Budget

... Intermission ...

17. Stand Up Comic
18. Things Are Gonna Change (The Morning After)
19. Long Way From Home
20. The Getaway
21. Tired Of Waiting For You
22. Set Me Free
23. All Day And All Of The Night

Encores

24. Days
25. Lola
26. You Really Got Me

Tonight we saw Neko Case. Really great show. Her voice is a wonder and Kelly Hogan provided perfect harmony and counterpoint throughout the evening. Did every song save one from the new album. I've decided to classify her work as 'gothic folk' after seeing and hearing this show.

I have not, KH, but I hope they do some more. Wes posted that he recently finished novel number two, and although I don't know what its about or if its even a period piece, I hope there is a similar musical side project with it.

Anxiously counting down to sunday when I get to see Uncle Robert and Merle together in B'ham. For once, the expression "joy squared" is not being used sarcastically.

I went to see Billy Bragg on Wednesday in London and met up with So Lack and BWAP.

It was an excellent two hour show of Billy Bragg solo and also with the fantastic Ian McLagan on piano and keyboards. Wiggy joined them for a romp through A13.

Highlights were a music hall version of "Honey I'm A Big Boy Now", a cover of Booker T & The MGs "Green Onions" and a turbocharged 20 minute final encore of all 7 songs from Life's A Riot With Spy Vs Spy.

Great gig on Wednesday, Billy Bragg was on great form. The tour is called 'Hope not Hate' and is campaigning against the BNP, who are gaining support through people's ignorance. The people of Barking & Dagenham took little notice though as on Thursday they elected 11 BNP councillors to the local council. What is going on? I know there is a backlash against Labour at the moment but surely there are better alternatives than this bunch of fascist, racist idiots??????????

On a lighter note, BWAP took me to see a band called the Dead String Brothers last night. They were playing in a pub not far from us, all six of them crammed into a corner with a packed pub of about 50-70. Great alt.country sound very tight and much much better than your average pub band. The lead singer's voice is remarkably similar to Mick Jagger and I would be surprised if Exile OMS isn't one of their big influences. (Thankfully the singer doesn't look like Jagger)

I'll have a free night in Amsterdam on the 20th, so I check out to see if anyone interesting is playing and it's Neko Case - so I go to the venue site to get tickets and there are no tickets available - shit....any help or suggestions would be appreciated - I might just turn up and see if anyone has a spare.

Definitely worth it. It's interesting following the Moz UK tour how the nonsense of paying over the odds on eBay is probably a waste of time as in one case the venue had some tickets on the night, touts ar eoften selling at face value, or someone turns up with one they want to get rid of, so I would have thought getting into Neko Case in Amsterdam would be well worth it.
