Pop and Blue both gave you some can't miss recommendations and I would just like to add that Cohen is also the beneficiary of two superlative tribute records; I'm Your Fan and Tower of Song. Much like Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen is unearthly with that songwriters' pen but his voice can be a tough sell if you're not in the mood for it. I also like Jennifer Warnes' Famous Blue Raincoat which is an entire record of his work although the production is very, very 80's.

I just started out listening to Cohen the first week of the year. It was Songs Of Love And Hate. I fell in love with it on first listen. It just keeps growing on me too!

It is an unusually good mix of music.

I am thankful for the Leonard Cohen recommendations. And the less mainstream the vocal, the better. There are a zillion american idol vocalists. There is only one Tom Waits.

Can you imagine Tom as a contestant on American Idol. What would the judges say?

Now that would be memorable.

Paul Simon "Surprise" (with sonic landscapes by Brian Eno). e-gads! Steve Gadd on drums. The Eno textures on Simons world, folk, pop, trybrid formula actually work, and make an already good product better.

Cannonball Adderley: "Somethin' Else" (Miles Davis, Hank Jones, Sam Jones, Art Blakely).

Wayne Shorter: "Speak No Evil" (Fredie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Elvin Jones).

The Essential Doc Watson

I've heard about Doc's genius so when I saw this disc for $2.50 I figured I shouldn't pass it up. I'm glad I didn't.

I was surprised to hear a song he does called 'Rising Sun Blues'. It starts, 'There is a house in New Orleans, they call the Rising Sun'. I didn't know that 'The House of The Rising Sun' is a traditional song dating back to the 17th century. I found this interesting site about cover versions:

Ah, I adore that record. Perfect from start to finish. For anyone able to play DVD-Audio, I have to recommend the HDAD version of this that is as close to hearing the master-tapes as you're ever going to get.

May 29 = release date for TRIR, so down to Fopp in the pouring rain for the version with DVD. Played the CD twice and so far liking it hugely. Feels like a happy and succesful collaboration, and liking the overall blend of Imposters + horns plus Toussaint's magisterial piaano. I wouldn't mind a CD of just solo Allen on piano. It'sa beautiful thing. Several stand-out songs on the LP, e.g. title track. Some which for me are fillerish, but they'll probably grow too. AT has clearly written some fine songs.

Also, a week ahead of when I was expecting to see it, this little item:

About to play it soon, dead excited! Lovely packaging as ever with Scrit. That's his fifth LP proper in 25 years (not including the Early comp). Hoping he'll go on tour soon.

Have had Randy Newman's Good Old Boys on vinyl for three or four years now, but finally ordered the deluxe edition CD. Glad to finally have this one on CD

Calexico - Garden Ruin

Quite a bit different from their earlier work, maybe. But it's still great music. I especially like "Bisbee Blue"

Err, more or less. Got the Calexico a few months ago, EC and Camera Obscura this month. I'm probably a bit over my budget TBH, but not as bad as last year.

That's Bill Evans in his late career coke fiend hide-behind-the-beard phase. Still put out some brilliant albums during that period. The live "Turn Out the Stars" is something else.
