Peter Case has heart surgery

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

heard, that yr diggin' it, that it hasn't all fallen on deaf
ears...that you remember the gigs, take the songs to heart...

... midsummer: you know, I almost never gig in August...good time to
read & write...over in France...I'll be playing San Diego August

Larchmont - just a short drive from here...

and wouldn't you know it falls on my wife's birthday - we already have plans for dinner/U2 concert in the City that evening. Bummer. Would really like to see Peter Case again. I haven't seen him live since the Plimsouls days.

Funny, for a second there WSS, I thought you'd moved back to L.A. You seem like the kind of guy who'd live near Larchmont (the street, I mean).

Where's that? My LA geography is a little hazy, since I haven't been back there in more than ten years. I am considering coming back for my 20th high school reunion next year, now that my brother and sister have moved back from Pittsburgh and San Francisco, respectively. Probably looks nothing like it did when I left.

Me, I'm a product of LAUSD, Venice High division.

46-SONG TRIBUTE ALBUM, A CASE FOR CASE,
JUST ONE OF THE WINTER HAPPENINGS ON CASE LOAD FOR PETER CASE

>From living as a busker to working as a fulltime musical professional
and two-time Grammy nominee, after 30 years, Peter Case is still
playing. The end of one year and the beginning of the new marks a
period of unprecedented activity for the singer-songwriter-guitarist,
from the release of a 46-song tribute to his songs by other artists and
his first spoken word recordings, to contributing some
behind-the-scenes work in the Johnny Cash biopic, Walk the Line.

The new year begins with the release of A CASE FOR CASE, a three-disc
tribute to his songs, as performed by other artists. Forty-six
versions, including those from John Prine, Dave Alvin, James McMurtry,
Maura O'Connell, Chuck Prophet, Chris Smither and Amy Rigby are
included in the set to be released on February 7. A series of live
shows are planned for Austin, Nashville, San Francisco and Washington
D.C. with shows already scheduled in LA for January 27 and New York on
February 8. Proceeds from the discs and ticket sales will benefit
Hungry for Music, an organization providing musical instruments to
schools and students in need.

"It's fantastic, overwhelming in a way...I like a lot of these versions

better than my own," says Case of the project. "I'm going to have to
get the record and learn some of them! I'm glad it's for Hungry for
Music, it's
a good cause."

Fellow songwriter and friend Dave Alvin says, "Peter has always been
someone I respect as a person, as a musician, as a powerful songwriter
and as a bottomless well of soulfulness. Simply put, he's one of our
best."

Also new this month, Case (who earned a Grammy nod himself for
producing
AVALON BLUES:THE SONGS OF MISSISSIPPI JOHN HURT), is among the featured

artists paying tribute to a folk legend on I AM THE RESURRECTION: A
TRIBUTE TO JOHN FAHEY. Produced by new folk artist M. Ward with Stephen
Brower for
Vanguard Records, the compilation also features Fahey devotees Devendra

Banhart, Sufjain Stevens and Calexico.

"Fahey is a great example of someone who walked his own path and made
his
own world of music and he's an inspiration to me," says Case. "I first

discovered him in '69. It was the first time I heard his album Requia
and C tuning and I've been playing music based on that tuning for
years. 'Catfish' is a piece I've always loved. I'd always played parts
of it but I finally learned the whole thing."

In other Case news, he makes his debut as a spoken word artist on the
audio literary magazine, VERB. Joining writers like Ha Jin and James
Dickey
in the VERB audio-literary tradition, Case composed "Bomblight Prayer
Vigil," a six-part suite performed by himself and guitarist Duane
Jarvis. A release party is to be scheduled in a Los Angeles-area
bookstore.

"Editor and publisher Darren Wang asked me to contribute. I've never
tried
anything like this before but I'm glad I did. I call what I do not
poems but
spoken songs," he says.

Case's recent work also extends to the big and small screens. You can
hear
his guitar and harmonica in the Johnny Cash biopic, WALK THE LINE.
"They
called me to play harmonica on the soundtrack session for 'It Ain't Me
Babe'
and I ended up staying there for a week, playing the Cash part on
acoustic
guitar on a lot of the songs," he says.

Case's song "Ice Water" is the theme to a new A&E series, RANDOM ONE, a

reality show about two guys who expect nothing in return for committing

random acts of kindness. And two Case archival tracks, "Hypnotized" by
the
Plimsouls and "One Way Ticket" by the Nerves, are included on CHILDREN
OF NUGGETS, the latest box in the Rhino NUGGETS series.

With all the activity swirling around him, Case continues to play solo
gigs
and dates with his former band, the Plimsouls. Having completed a
European tour with fellow LA singer-songwriter John Doe in the fall,
the two are pairing-up for a reprise of the shows on January 19 at
Café Largo in LA. And
following a successful run of gigs in the summer of '05, Peter and the
Plimsouls are scheduled for appearances at SXSW in Austin in March '06.

And finally, Case's popular songwriting workshops that he teaches
throughout the U.S. and the world (literally, from Martha's Vineyard to
Belfast, Northern Ireland) will reconvene at McCabe's Guitar Shop in
Santa Monica and at the Claremont Folk Music Center in Claremont,
California beginning in January.

"You can't really teach people how to write songs but if they have the
inclination, you can help them through the rough spots. I spent years
figuring out these things, feeling my way in the dark. These
songwriting
classes are a labor saving device. I didn't think I would, but going
into
my sixth year of it, I really love teaching."

And what better songwriting teacher to have than one with a 46-song
tribute
to his songcraft?

A CASE FOR CASE is released on February 7.

The latest from Pete -

Tue, 29 May 2007

On June 15, I will be playing my first full show in LA this year, and
it's a special show indeed. One reason I think it's special is that
it's the first show that will feature a majority of the songs from my
new Yep Roc album ('Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John,' available August
7). That's exciting for me, and I always love kicking off a season at
Largo, one of my favorite LA clubs (and certainly, the darkest! If
you're running from the law down Fairfax, duck into Largo, they'll
never be able to find you in there).

What makes this night even greater, for me, is the bill: Flanagan at
Largo has allowed me to book two of my favorite songwriters and
singers: Jesse De Natale (from San Francisco) and Ron Franklin (from
Memphis.)

Jesse has two great albums out, has toured the country a bunch
(recently opening on tour for Jonathan Richman), and has gotten the '
big thumbs up' from Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan, who profess to be
great fans. His music, is beautiful, soulful, rocking...different. His
song 'Angel Baby' talks vividly about a street kid's first experience
of music... It's hard to talk about music people, but this song gets
it done.

Ron Franklin has made several albums in Memphis, the most recent is
'City Lights.' He's a lot younger than me, in his late twenties or
early thirties, has a lonesome voice and a feel for the blues,
combined with Memphis Knowledge: he knows what to do with a song, and
where to put the beat. He's been a part of that city's thriving garage
band scene, but, like me, is equally a rocker and a 'folker.' He
writes great lyrics in both genres and gets 'em across.

The show starts at 8:30 on the 15... Jesse's first, Ron, then me... I
should be on by quarter to 11 (sure!). The ticket is $15, and you can
even evade the law.

Tours Postponed, Gigs Rescheduled, For Health Reasons

On January 15 I underwent emergency open heart surgery, at a hospital in Santa Monica. The surgery was successful, but I am now on a long program of recovery.

In other words, I'm glad to be alive, but it really kicked my ass.

The UK/Euro tour has been postponed. I'll have news on this later.

We've rescheduled the McCabe's 'Peter Case 25th Anniversary' show (25 years as a solo artrist) for April 3.

Classes are rescheduled, tentatively, for March.

I'll have some more news on all of this in a few weeks, but I'm dropping out again for now. Thanks to everybody who wrote or called, thank you for your thoughts and support.

best, Peter

On January 15, 2009, three-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter-guitarist Peter Case underwent emergency open-heart surgery.
The surgery was successful and he is now on a long program of recovery. Peter is not ill and is expected to make a full recovery … but the medical bills associated with this necessary surgery and recovery are and will continue to be very high. And, like all too many talented working artists, Peter does not have medical insurance.

Hidden Love Medical Relief is an effort by Peter’s friends, fans and fellow artists to help alleviate the burden of these mounting medical bills so that Peter can recover, get back and focus on what he does best – writing and performing his songs. No one involved with Hidden Love is going to make money on this endeavor. That's not the point. All money raised through this effort and the Hidden Love Benefit Concert will be applied to Peter’s medical expenses.

The idea behind Hidden Love is that acts of Love – big or small – are often Hidden. We – and you – are doing this because we care for Peter and for his work and feel deeply that, at the end of the day, we need to take care of each other.

In the upper right of these pages, you'll find links to information about Peter and to the Hidden Love Medical Relief Fund.

The Hidden Love Benefit Concert is presently being organized. Please visit the Benefit Concert page regularly as details are announced. You can access the Benefit Concert page by clicking the button to the left. Prior to the concert, tickets will also be available for sale from the Benefit Concert page.

And, of course, please visit the Donations page by clicking on the button to the left. All donations of $35 and higher will receive the Peter Case tribute CD A Case for Case (a 3-disc, 47-song collection of some of music's most talented artisits performing Peter Case's songs), copies of which are graciously being donated by Hungry for Music, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing instruments and musical instruction to children. Donations and concert ticket purchases are separate transactions

PC 25th Anniversary Concert Set For December 4 at McCabe's

Hello, everybody! Peter Case Tour '09 (the tour with three concerts, spread over a 12 month period) is wrapping up on December 4 at McCabe's in Santa Monica.

This show is the rebooking of the cancelled January 2009 show that was to be the 25 year anniversary of the first show I ever played at McCabe's, in January, 1984. Oh well, better late the never. I'm feeling much better now, folks. I'm back writing new songs, and getting ready to record a new album or two.

So come on out. I'm really looking forward to it. There will be some guest musicians, I believe, and some surprises.

Tickets are already on sale at McCabes.com or by phone 310 828 4497.

Songwriter's Workshops Scheduled For January

The first songwriter's workshops in a year are scheduled now to begin in January at McCabe's. There are two classes, Songwriter's I, on Saturdays, (the workshop I've been leading since 2001) and an advanced class on Tuesday evenings, for those who have already taken the Saturday class. The McCabe's info is below, and has contact numbers etc...

Also, I'd like to announce the release of an album I didn't even remember recording. The Breakaways was a group Paul Collin and I formed directly after the Nerves broke up. We were only together a few months, playing a handful of gigs at the Whiskey and other Hollywood clubs, and working ceaselessly on writing new songs. We demo'ed these, and somehow, after 31 years (sheesh!) the tapes have surfaced (they were being kept in a safe place by an associate of Paul's.) I was nervous to hear them, but found the collection fun to listen to. The record is available from iTunes, or from

http://www.alive-totalenergy.com/x/?page_id=938

Here's a recent review:

The Breakaways: Walking Out on Love (The Lost Sessions)

Power pop missing link between the Nerves, Beat and Plimsouls

Hot on the heels of Alive’s first-ever formal reissue of the Nerves EP and a rare live set, comes this volume of demos cut by Peter Case and Paul Collins in between the demise of the Nerves and the formation of their respective bands, the Plimsouls and the Beat. As with the Nerves, Collins started out on drums and Case on bass, with various guitarists pressed into action for cassette- and home-made reel-to-reel recording sessions. Case and Collins handled the vocals and eventually took on guitar duties as well. The recordings vary in quality, but the enthusiasm of power-pop pals playing and singing their hearts out easily transcends moments of mono muddiness and under-mixed vocals.

The thirteen songs include a few that had been recorded by the Nerves such as “One Way Ticket” and “Working Too Hard,” as well as originals that would become staples for the Plimsouls (“Everyday Things”) and Beat (“I Don’t Fit In,” “Let Me Into Your Life,” “USA” and “Walking Out on Love”). Even more interesting to fans are the originals that didn’t make it past these rough demos. “Radio Station” features the deep reverb guitar and impassioned vocal Case would perfect with the Plimsouls, “Will You Come Through?” has the ringing guitar of a P.F. Sloan folk rocker, and “House on the Hill” shows off Case’s rock ‘n’ soul sound.

In addition to the songs Collins would re-record with the Beat, he offers the driving drums and Everly-styled harmonies of “Little Suzy” and the rhythm-guitar propelled “Do You Want to Love Me?” As Collins notes in the liners, “this is the sound of pop on the streets of Los Angeles circa 1978, no money, no deals, just the burning desire to make something happen in a town without pity.” Case and Collins approached these sessions with the unbridled passion and total dedication of musicians without masters – no label, no audience, no radio stations, no managers or agents, just the muse of pop music. The recordings may be fuzzy in spots, but the invention is clear as a chiming bell. [©2009 hyperbolium dot com

Thanks to everyone for their kindness and support this year.

PETER CASE SONGWRITER'S WORKSHOP 1

Pete brings 25 years of songwriting experience to this exciting and popular workshop, which he's been leading since 2001. Beginning with an exploration of the craft involved in the classic songs of Dylan and the Beatles, to songs of the present day, we learn techniques for producing ideas, exercises for improving the vividness and power of our songs, and many tricks of the trade. Topics include song structure, bridges, guitar tunings as a compositional tool, and breaking through "writer's block." Every week there is a songwriting assignment designed to connect what we've been learning in the class with our own hearts and feelings. The workshop is an encouraging, friendly, and at times humorous environment. People are invited to play the assigned songs in the workshop, though performance is not mandatory. For further info, send e-mail to case_peter@hotmail.com

This class is limited to 10 students. Pre-enrollment is highly recommended.

Peter Case 2-4:15 pm Saturdays, Jan 9-Feb 13 (6 sessions) $300

PETER CASE SONGWRITER'S WORKSHOP 2

For graduates of Peter Case's popular Songwriter's Workshop, this 4-week class continues and expands on the material presented in the first workshop. Songs will be written each week, and presented to the class. Subjects include imagery, rhyming, verse development, melodic ideas, chord changes, and generating songs from various sources. For further info, send e-mail to case_peter@hotmail.com

This class is limited to 10 students. Pre-enrollment is highly recommended.
