What are you listening to right now?

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

What do you reckon? They were fun on Later. Haven't heard the LP though.

They're an easy target what with all the hype in the media, but I actually enjoy the album a lot.
Fun is the right word here. The album's got plenty of hooks and I like their combination of Jesus & Mary Chain and Phil Spector pop.
And I can't help smiling hearing the guy's accent.

I had that on tape once, someone nabbed it. About time I got me some Velvets CDs. Although the debut is a landmark and full of genius, the one I really want to hear most is the eponymous third. So many outstanding songs on it. I probably should get this

Different Carl Perkins. This one was a pianist. Died very young.

Elvis talking about Miles' quintet with Herbie Hancock in that Rolling Stone interview made me want to break this one out...

And one day we will die
And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea
But for now we are young
Let us lay in the sun
And count every beautiful thing we can see
Love to be
In the arms of all I'm keeping here with me
If you don't know what is wrong with me
Then you don't know what you've missed

What are they called again? Tiger Milk Plane, or something. I'd never heard of them, but keep seeing refs to this being on ejof the 10 best LPs ever, etc., typically in Amazon best ever lists.

I'm listening to Ron Sexsmith's Exit Strategy of the Soul. I love the warm, soulful arrangements of it and it has grown on me in a big way, but it took seeing him live to make me really get my head around it fully. It's actually more consistent than many of his LPs. It slightly lacks standout masterpieces, but at least 6 of the songs are well up there and the whole effect is lovely. Definitely one of the best CDs of the year for me.

They're called Neutral Milk Hotel, though your suggestion sounds as absurd.
They seem to be an icon band in the world of indie music fans (whoever they are) and as I have seen this album ranked as the best indie album EVER I decided to give it a try.
Not everything is my cup of tea, but the title song, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, has become one of my favourite songs in the last couple of months.

A much-maligned album. I think it's fantastic.

Why maligned?

Been revisiting Bowie's Scary Monsters. It has more squally guitar on it than I remembered. Some great songs. 'Teenage Wildlife' tries hard to be epic, but a) Fripp is trying to repeat the magic of "Heroes", and whilst it is a delicious guitar line, you think nothing can beat the earlier song, why try and rip yourself off? and b) it doesn't hang together so well as a song. Great LP overall, though. I remember very clearly the excitement in 1980 of picking it up and running home, aged 16 and old enough to judge whether my icon and hero still had what it took and thinking 'Christ this is good!' when I got it home.
