I was not let down by my high anticipations of the I'm Not There soundtrack, two CDs of incredible Dylan covers. Some are obviously stronger than others, but it's consistantly good throughout. After a few listens, my early favourites include Roger McGuinn & Calexico's "One More Cup Of Coffee," Cat Power's "Stuck Inside of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again", Karen O's "Highway 61 Revisited," Sufjan Stevens' "Ring Them Bells" and Yo La Tengo's "I Wanna Be Your Lover" (features John Sebastian on harmonica!)

If you're at all into covers, definitely pick this collection up.

Blue, you have that Leonard Cohen I'm Your Man covers thingy, don't you? How do you like it (should probably check BT but I'm too lazy)? I saw the clip of Martha Wainwright on Letterman and was pretty impressed. Is the rest up to this standard?...

I thought the movie was shite, but mostly because it tried to do too many different things at once. Some of the covers were good - Nick Cave doing the title track, in particular. Jarvis Cocker was great too. I thought some were kind of lousy.

Thanks. I was considering buying the soundtrack, but may just get selected songs through iTunes. In addition to the Cave, Cocker and Wainwright, are there any others worth my time?

The last batch of cd's I bought were all from the 60's as I havn't listened all that much to music from that time. I finally got around to getting Pet Sounds and also The Kinks' Arthur, The Doors' debut, Pink Floyd's Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (though I knew that one from before) and the first album by 13th Floor Elevators. However, of all the albums I bought, this is my favourite by far:

Just wonderful.

My copy of this great ep should be arriving in the post this week hopefully. Rich Girls was all over the radio in Paris a few weeks ago while I struggled to deal with the flu that afflicted me while I was supposed to be on holiday. The song kept me going and is easily one of the tracks of the year. Here's the demo,

Somehow, beyond any formula or like-recording, this stays fresh with repeated listening. Very talented fellow.

Can't listen to the Michigan album. I'm a Buckeye.

Haven't seen the new Coen brothers film yet (I really want to), but this strikes me as the dumbest piece of film criticism I've read in a long while.

http://www.slate.com/id/2177685/nav/tap3/

The Big Lebowski was on TV the other night and even though I was exhausted and have seen it umpteen times I had to stay up and watch it again. If anything, I would argue that their films are more consequential than they are given credit for being.

The Coen Bros remain my favourite contemporary filmmakers, despite a few misfires (Intolerable Cruelty and The Ladykillers were okay, but not up to their standard).

This is the only bad review I've seen of No Country For Old Men, Sam. It's being hailed as a masterpeice by practically everyone else. It was very close to winning the Palm D'Or at Cannes and did very well at the Toronto International Film Festival as well.

Red and I are going to catch it tonight.

Random Ronstadt, thanks to BWAP. I know it's not cool, but I really love her early stuff.

Brilliance of Morricone...

and if you haven't yet the pleasure of viewing the film, it is well worth the time. Jeremy Irons, Robert DeNiro. A moving experience and some of the greatest cinematography ever.

So, so good.
Had the song whose name I forget but has a verse like Dylan's I Want You and a memorable course that goes 'I thought I heard someone calling my name' on my mind this morning. Knew it was on a Word sampler CD, so looked through for a song title based on that, and then found the one in question. Delightful. How does it compare to the rest of the record?
