The Ballad of a Punk Rock Legend

Post by pophead2k »

I wrote this song back in 91 or 92. It was inspired by a real guy named Steve from Spokane, WA (my hometown) who broke his leg when he crashed on his motorcycle while trying to make a gin and tonic (!) He was so punk rock he kept breaking the leg in the same place. He wore a cast for something like 4 years straight.

Ballad of a Punk Rock Legend
We met at the gravesite to pay our last respects
To the parents and the sister of that punk rock derelict
And I noticed how the lightning made your ashen face go white
And the lady from the station stuck that camera in your face and the whole world
Could see you cry

We went to your apartment and he stared down at your bed
You tried to forget about him but he echoed in your head
And I caressed your memory for every last detail
Then we smoked a cigarette and wondered how our punk rock boy had ever come to fail…

Punk rock legend we will not forget
We will never trust the government
Everything’s a sell-out or a scam
Subtle as a battering ram
You’re a punk rock legend

He loved his leather jacket with the band’s name on the back
He loved to ride his motor-bike like he’s under attack
And the road of good intentions is paved with bad mistakes
As I made love to his girlfriend
I wondered if he’d ever come to greet me as a friend
