My Name is Ozymandias, King of Kings

Post by tokyo vogue »

"I have seen the old glimmer die," you said, "and it frightens me."

In the early morning I will not ask questions -

I trace lines between your beauty marks,
Drawing a map to lead me home
(To my kingdom)
And on your back, a tattoo of a skeleton key.

But there is the sand of sleep in your eyes -
I have awoken you from your dreams of
Dry heat and dead kings
Who rose each morning to drag the sun from the ground.
(I have awoken you from a dream of your kingdom)

"This is what we have built," you said, "and it is practically nothing at all."

In the early morning I will not ask questions
Of places and times, or betrayals;
Of strange acquaintences, or forced smiles,
Or the hands that have traced these lines -
Hands that did not belong to me.

Footprints never stay for long in the desert;
I know this well, for I have seen the sands shifting.
(Ours is the kingdom of the disappearing)
The air is still and clear,
Broken only by the hint of muttered apologies
And admonishments,
And lost appointments.
Beneath the land lie tombs.
(Ours is the kingdom of the disappearing)

The ghost of dead kings are dormant in the curve of your mouth,
And dead gods do not rage in your eyes,
But only sit and wait for a sun that is no longer risen,
For the sacrifice that does not come.
(I do not believe in the gods in your eyes)

All my gods are dead.

Is this what you wanted?
I have made a map to the past and I have followed it
With candles and rope, and I have little to show.
All the gods are dead; the deserts are silent,
The last of the kings have turned to dust.
Ours is the kingdom of the disappearing.

(There are, perhaps, no questions left to ask)

EDIT: Inspired by Shelley's "Ozymandias", obviously.

nah, it's not lyrical. it's about decay and death, would snappy rhythm and flow be appropriate?

also, hey, a fellow lj-er. and i see you like saetia. they were pretty good, but off minor are better. hot cross are lame, it's a pity they're the band everyone's latched onto.

interesting--I like it very much.
Dry heat and dead kings
I love how those words go together.
Like me, the "g" is silent.
